Bucks outlast Suns in overtime

November 23, 2017 By Bill Scott

Playing shorthanded, the Milwaukee Bucks knocked off the Phoenix Suns 113-107 in overtime on Wednesday night, ending a two game losing streak.

The Bucks played without starters Giannis Antetokounmpo and John Henson, as well as reserves Mirza Teletovic and Matthew Dellavedova.  Khris Middleton hit 14 of 26 from the field and finished with 40 points, while Eric Bledsoe returned to Phoenix and scored 30 points against his former team.

Thon Maker also added career highs of 16 points and eight rebounds.

DeAndre Liggins collected five of Milwaukee’s 16 steals on the night as the Suns turned it over 29 times.  It was Liggins, who scored his first basket on a shot clock buzzer beating jumper in the overtime to give the Bucks the lead for good.

Former Bucks big man, Greg Monroe finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds against his old team.

The win was the fifth straight for the Bucks over the Suns and third straight in Phoenix.  The Bucks are off until Saturday night when they take on the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City.

Bucks deal for Bledsoe, send Monroe to Phoenix

The move had been speculated on for weeks.  Tuesday, the Milwaukee Bucks acted by sending center Greg Monroe and a first and second round draft pick to the Phoenix Suns for point guard Eric Bledsoe.

The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and is yet to be finalized by the NBA.

Monroe averaged 13.3 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists during his 165 games with the Bucks.  After starting in his first season with the team, Monroe came off the bench last season.

Bledsoe has averaged 18.8 points, 6.0 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals since joining the Suns in 2013.  Last season, he averaged a career-high 21.1 points and 6.3 assists before missing the final month of the season with knee soreness.

Provided the trade goes through, Bledsoe isn’t expected to join the team until it reaches San Antonio on Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Bucks jumped out to a big early lead on Atlanta and went on to beat the Hawks 117-106 in Atlanta on Sunday.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 11 rebounds and Khris Middleton, who has struggled early this season, finished with a season high 27 points.  Middleton also dished out nine assists.  He started out 2 for 11 from the field before getting his offense rolling.

Rashad Vaughn, who was inactive for  the first few games, went 4 for 6 from three-point range to finish with 12 points.

The Bucks are playing without center Greg Monroe.  Coach Jason Kidd said Monroe will miss the next two weeks with a left calf injury.

The Milwaukee Bucks let a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter get away, falling to the Dallas Mavericks 106-104 in their preseason opener.  Dallas rookie Johnathan Motley scored the game winning basket for the Mavericks with 4.7 seconds left.  Rashad Vaughn’s three point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark.

Vaughn led the Bucks with 20 points on 8-of-18 shooting.  Bucks first round draft pick D.J. Wilson finished with 9 points on 4-of-7 shooting in his debut.  Fellow rookie Sterling Brown was 0-for-9 from the field in a team-high 27 1/2 minutes.

Kendall Marshall tallied 10 of the Bucks 34 assists in 16 minutes, all in the second half.

Greg Monroe had 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Bucks played without their star, Giannis Antetokounmpo, who didn’t make the trip following the death of his father over the weekend.  Bucks coach Jason Kidd said there’s no timetable for Giannis’ return.

Second-year center Thon Maker also missed the exhibition opener due to a right ankle injury that he suffered in practice.

The Bucks return to action Wednesday night when they play host to the Indiana Pacers at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

The Milwaukee Bucks defense has been hit and miss this season.  When they decide to defend, the result is usually very good.  Such was the case in their Eastern Conference playoff opener in Toronto on Saturday.

The Bucks pulled away in the second half for a 97-83 win to take game one of the best-of-seven series against the Raptors.

The Bucks defense held the Raptors to 32 points and 20% shooting in the second half (36% overall) as they ended a franchise 17-game road losing streak in Game 1 of a playoff series, which dates back to 1983.  The Raptors fell to 1-11 in playoff series openers and 0-9 in Game 1 of a first round series.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a strong start and finished with 28 points.  Teammate Greg Monroe, who played in his first ever playoff game put together one of his finest performances of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Bucks closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule by knocking off the Charlotte Hornets 89-79 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Monday night.

With the win, the Bucks (42-39) clinched a winning record and locked up at least a sixth-place finish in the Eastern Conference.  It means the Bucks will likely see a first-round playoff matchup against third-seeded Toronto.

Although chances are slim, the Bucks could still climb into the 5th spot in the East by winning the regular season finale at Boston and getting Atlanta to lose both of its remaining games.

Giannis Antetokounmpo collected his third triple-double and 8th of his career with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.  Greg Monroe added 16 points.

The Bucks hit 16 of 28 three-pointers, led by Jason Terry, who hit five of seven.  Khris Middleton and Tony Snell both hit four of five from distance.

Rookie Malcolm Brogdon also returned to the starting lineup after missing five games with a back injury.  He finished with five points, four rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist led Charlotte (36-45) with 13 points.

Bulls playing like their season is on the line in victory over Bucks

March 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

With the regular season winding down, the Chicago Bulls are running out of time and they played like it Sunday, rolling to a 109-94 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Sunday afternoon.

Nikola Mirotic poured in 28 points and Jimmy Butler added a career-high 14 assists, helping the Bulls avoid a series sweep at the hands of the Bucks.  Despite the loss, the Bucks still won the season series 3-1.

Chicago (35-39) moved within 2 1/2 games of the Bucks in the Eastern Conference playoff race.  The Bucks (37-36) are tied with both Atlanta and Indiana for fifth place, although the Hawks own a tiebreaker advantage over the Bucks.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Bucks.  Greg Monroe added 16 points and Khris Middleton 14.

Chicago hit 10 of 21 from three-point range and shot 54.1% overall from the field for the game.

Defense was the reason why the Bucks had entered play winning 11 of their last 13 games.  That defense struggled against the Bulls on Sunday.

The Bucks travel to Charlotte on Tuesday night to face the Hornets.
