Linsley, Clinton-Dix named All-Rookie

January 14, 2015 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers center Corey Linsley and safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix have been named to the NFL all-rookie team as selected by the Pro Football Writers of America.

Linsley is a fifth-round draft choice and has started every game at center this season.  He beat out a half-dozen other rookie centers and is the first center from Green Bay selected in the 41-year history of the team.

The Packers selected Clinton-Dix in the first round of the NFL draft.  He joined Johnnie Gray (1975), Tom Flynn (1984), George Teach (1993) and Nick Collins (2005) as an all rookie safety from Green Bay.

Former Badger linebacker Chris Borland was also voted to the team.

Clinton-Dix Contract

Packers rookie first-round draft pick Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has reportedly agreed to a contract with the team.  While financial terms weren’t available, it’s likely a four-year deal and could include a club optional fifth year.

Clinton-Dix was taken with the 21st pick in the first round.  Last year’s 21st pick, Cincinnati tight end Tyler Eifert, sighed a four-year deal worth $8.256 million and received a signing bonus worth $4.38 million.

Jermichael Finley

While Jermichael Finley’s locker inside the Green Bay lockerroom still has his name plate above, Finley is an unrestricted free agent and after more tests, has been cleared for football activities.

Finley’s agent, Blake Baratz told ProFootballTalk.com that Finley has a team visit lined up for Friday, but declined to unveil that team. [Read more…]

Packers try to improve their defense, start with a safety (Audio & Video)

May 9, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers defense lacked playmakers last season.  We saw missed tackles, take/aways were down and there wasn’t a

single interception from the safety position.

With the top two playmaking linebackers off the board, the Packers used the 21st pick in the 2014 NFL draft on Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.  Jerron McMillian was cut in December and M.D. Jennings was not offered a contract during the off-season.  And starter Morgan Burnett didn’t come close to playing up to his new contract that pays him more than $6-million a season.

The Packers are hoping Clinton-Dix will come in and push to start right away.  They’re also hoping he’ll help boost the play of Burnett.

Safeties coach Darren Perry believes they get a player in Clinton-Dix that can do it all.  One scout said “Ha Ha” isn’t great at any one thing, but he’s pretty solid at everything.

Packers go with Alabama safety Clinton-Dix on day 1

Clinton-Dix with the 21st pick in the opening round.

Clinton-Dix started 20 of 38 games for the Alabama Crimson Tide, intercepting seven passes that he returned for a total of 115 yards.  He also recorded 100 tackles (58 solo) with four stops behind the line of scrimmage and forced one fumble.

Last season, he recorded a career-high 52 tackles (30 solos) that included 3.5 stops for losses of 7 yards.  He deflected four passes and intercepted two others.  He closed out his career with six tackles, including four solo stops that featured a pair of hits behind the line of scrimmage vs. Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl.

As good as Clinton-Dix is in pass coverage, he is equally effective in run support.

After GM Ted Thompson failed to upgrade the safety position over the past couple of seasons, it appears he has finally done so with this pick in the opening round.

Thompson said Clinton-Dix was the best player left on their board and it’s a pick that fits very well into their needs.

The Packers didn’t get a single interception from the safety position last season.  The addition of Clinton-Dix alongside Morgan Burnett will hopefully mean better days ahead for the Packers defense.

It’s the second straight season that the Packers have taken a member of the Alabama Crimson Tide early on.  Eddie Lacy went to Packers in the second round last season.
