Marquette’s NCAA post season changes take a big hit

February 14, 2016 By Bill Scott

MarquetteGoldenEagles2The Marquette Golden Eagles had the ball with a two-point lead with 1:42 left to play on Saturday.  That’s when Creighton took over and pulled out a 65-62 win over the Golden Eagles at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.

Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski called a timeout to set up a play for the Golden Eagles (16-10, 5-8 Big East).  He said his team didn’t run the play and Henry Ellenson missed an off-balance three as the coach questioned his players for not running the play.

“I know we have three freshmen and a sophomore whatever on the court at the end of the game, but 25 games in out of a timeout you have to try to do what we want to do and if it doesn’t work then that’s on me,” Wojciechowski said. “But, you’ve got to try to do it.  Not doing it is not acceptable.”

James Milliken hit a three-pointer for Creighton to put the Blue Jays up one.  Marquette’s Traci Carter missed a jumper that would have given the Golden Eagles the lead back again.

Marquette elected not to foul and forced Creighton into a miss, but the Golden Eagles couldn’t get the rebound.  The ball was tipped out to Isaiah Zierden who was fouled and made a pair of free throws to give Creighton the three-point win.

The loss crushed any chances that Marquette has at receiving an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.

Ellenson finished with 16 points to lead Marquette in defeat.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Thursday the ten watch list finalists for the 2016 Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.  The annual honor in its second year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball.

Among the ten players is Marquette freshman Henry Ellenson, who is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds a game.  He ranks 4th in the Big East in scoring and first in rebounding.

Ellenson was voted to the preseason All Big East second team and has been named the Big East Freshman of the Year five times already this season.  He is a projected lottery pick in the 2016 NBA Draft.

In March, five finalists will be presented to Karl Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee to decide the winner.

Last season, Montrezl Harrell of Louisville was named the inaugural winner of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.

Ellenson collected a pair of double-doubles in wins over Stetson and Butler, averaging 22 points, 10.5 rebounds and three blocks per contest.  He knocked down all of his three-point attempts and combined to shoot 81.8 percent from the free throw line.

Ellenson’s 32 points in the win over the Butler is the highest scoring total by a Marquette freshman since Dwyane Wade scored 35 at DePaul in 2001-02.

Ellenson’s 13 double-doubles are the ninth most in college basketball and most in the Big East.

Marquette picks good time for first Big East win

January 6, 2016 By Bill Scott

MarquetteGoldenEagles2The Marquette Golden Eagles couldn’t have picked a better time for their first Big East win of the season.  They marched into Providence, Rhode Island and upset the 8th-ranked Friars 65-64.

Freshman Henry Ellenson blocked point guard Kris Dunn’s final shot to preserve the win, their first over top-10 team since it beat No. 5 Miami in the 2013 NCAA Tournament and first as an unranked team since beating No. 4 Louisville on back in 2004.

Marquette’s win came after a pair of losses to Seton Hall and Georgetown to start the Big East season.

Ellenson finished with 13 points, ten rebounds and four blocks for Marquette, which opened a 12-point lead in the first half.

The Golden Eagles committed 19 turnovers, which allowed the Friars to stay in the game.  Providence eventually took a lead in the second half before Marquette finished strong for the win.
