Packers banged up going into preseason opener

August 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers had 19 players on their injury report going into their

Aaron Rodgers

afternoon practice on Tuesday in Green Bay.  For the second straight day, the Packers shortened their workout and went in shells instead of full pads.

Mike McCarthy ruled out three more players for Thursday’s preseason opener against the Chargers.  Marshall Newhouse (concussion), running back Brandon Saine (hamstring) and cornerback Sam Shields (elbow) have all been ruled out.

Herb Taylor is expected to get the start at left tackle for the Packers on Thursday night, which means Mike McCarthy will have to decide just how much time Aaron Rodgers will get in this contest.

Packers offensive line depth to be tested

August 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

Marshall Newhouse and teammate Greg Jennings suffered concussions in

Herb Taylor

Friday’s Family Night Scrimmage in Green Bay.  There’s plenty of depth at wide receiver behind Jennings, but if the Packers have to play without Newhouse at left tackle, their depth will be tested.

Derek Sherrod is listed second on the depth chart at left tackle, but he’s not ready to go yet and coach Mike McCarthy ruled him out of this Thursday’s preseason opener at San Diego. [Read more…]

Still no word on LT Marshall Newhouse

August 5, 2012 By Bill Scott

With the Green Bay Packers returning to the practice field tonight (7pm), it’s still uncertain whether or not LT Marshall Newhouse will

Derek Sherrod

be with them.

Newhouse left Friday night’s Family Night scrimmage with an undisclosed injury and he wasn’t in the locker room during the noon hour when reporters had access to players.  Coach Mike McCarthy won’t be addressing the media until after tonight’s practice.

While the Packers have their five starters set on the offensive line, an injury could be a big issue for the Packers.

Derek Sherrod is listed as the Packers No. 2 left tackle, but he remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues his recovery from a broken leg suffered last December.  Coach Mike McCarthy last week didn’t sound to optimistic about a quick return for Sherrod.

That leaves Herb Taylor and Andrew Datko as their top backups at left tackle for now.  But if this situation came up in the regular season, there’s a decent chance the Packers would move TJ Lang to left tackle and bring Evan Dietrich-Smith off the bench and into the left guard spot.  Dietrich-Smith is currently the backup at center.
