Four Badgers named to U.S. Women’s Olympic hockey roster

Former Wisconsin women’s hockey standouts Brianna Decker, Meghan Duggan, Hilary Knight and Alex Rigsby were named to the Team USA roster for the 2018 Winter Olympics on Monday.

Duggan and Knight will make their third appearance at the Olympics in February.  Duggan captained the U.S. squad in 2014.  Decker made her second Olympic team after playing in the 2014 games while Rigsby will make her Olympic debut this year in PyeongChang, South Korea.

The quartet will join the five Badgers, Emily Clark, Ann-Renee Desbiens, Meaghan Mikkelson, Sarah Nurse and Blayre Turnbull, selected on Dec. 22 to the Canadian Olympic team in PyeongChang.

The U.S. opens play at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Feb. 11 with a 1:40 a.m. CT game against Finland.

U.S. Men

For the first time since 1972, there are no Badger men’s hockey players on the U.S. Olympic team.  However, the coaching staff has three.

Badger men’s coach Tony Granato will serve as the Head Coach of the U.S. team.  Former Badger defensive great Chris Chelios will serve as an assistant coach and another former Badger, Jim Johannson is Team USA’s general manager.

U.S. falls to Canada in women’s hockey preliminary

periods of today’s women’s Olympic preliminary game in Sochi, Russia.  The only difference was former Badger Hilary Knight’s deflection that found the net on a U.S. power play late in the second period.

The third period was nearly all Canada.  They scored three straight goals and the American’s didn’t pick up a shot on goal until they threw one on net from center ice with 3 1/2 minutes to play.  Canada went on to win 3-2. [Read more…]

Former Badger, Vetter, leads Americans

Former Wisconsin Badger women’s goaltender, Jessie Vetter, needed just five

saves to shut out Russia as the U.S. women earned a 9-0 win in the International Ice Hockey Federation Women’s World Championship in Burlington, Vt.

Badgers Hilary Knight (2 goals) and Brianna Decker (1 goal, 2 assists) led the U.S. offensively.

Badgers to face Gophers for the top prize in Women’s College Hockey

Wisconsin advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four Championship Game be knocking off Boston College 6-2.

Wisconsin (33-4-2) fell behind in the first minute of the game 1-0, then scored five unanswered goals.  Senior Hilary Knight had two goals to lead the Badgers, including the game winner.  The Badgers scored twice in the first and three more times in the second period to put the game away.

Mark Johnson’s Badgers will face Minnesota in Sunday’s 3pm championship game at AMSOIL Arena in Duluth, Minnesota.  The Lady Gophers advanced with a 3-1 semifinal win over Cornell on Friday night.

Two Badgers among Patty Kazmaier finalists

Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker of the University of Wisconsin were among

the 10 finalists for the 2012 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. 

Knight, who has 28 goals and 28 assists in 36 games, leads the nation this season with eight game-winning goals. 

Decker, who scored in a team-record 32 straight games, leads the nation with 35 goals and ranks second with 77 points.

The winner will be announced on March 8.
