Badgers hold off Illini comeback

February 21, 2019 By Bill Scott

Avenging an earlier season loss, the Wisconsin women’s basketball team held off a last-minute Illinois comeback Wednesday night at the Kohl Center.  The Badgers downed the Illini 75-67, earning their fourth Big Ten Conference victory of the season.

Wisconsin (13-14, 4-11 Big Ten) senior Marsha Howard led the way for the Badgers with a double-double, 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Niya Beverley added 14 points, Junior Suzanne Gilreath had 11 and Freshman Imani Lewis had a game high 12 rebounds.  The Badgers owned the advantage on the boards 42-27.

Wisconsin shot 48.1 percent (25-52) from the field, including 6-14 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc.

Wisconsin outscored the Illini 28-18 in the paint and 20-9 from the bench.

Next up for the Badgers is a trip to New Brunswick, New Jersey to take on Rutgers Monday night for the first time this season.

Badgers end 5-game slide (AUDIO)

February 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ethan Happ poured in 27 points to lead the Wisconsin Badgers to a 78-69 win over the Illinois Fighting Illini, ending a five-game losing streak in the process.

The Badgers 911-15, 4-9 Big Ten) won for the first time since they beat the Illini (12-13, 2-10) on January 19 in Madison.

The Badgers are alone in 10th place in the Big Ten and if the season ended today, the Badgers would get a first round bye in the Big Ten playoffs.

The Badgers beat Illinois for the 13th straight time and 6th straight time in Champaign.

Brevin Pritzl, who has been mired in a season-long shooting slump, scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, hitting all three of his three-point shots.  He added six rebounds.

Illinois freshman guard Trent Frazier poured in 32 points.

The Badgers are off until Sunday when they host Michigan in a noon game at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin wide receiver Jared Abbrederis went through a full practice on Tuesday

and Badger coach Gary Anderson said there’s no doubt that Abbrederis will be ready to play Saturday night when the Badgers face Illinois in Champaign.

Stave said he felt pretty good running around and had no lingering effects from the concussion he suffered in Saturday’s 35-6 win over Northwestern at Camp Randall Stadium.

Wisconsin still managed to scored 28 points after Abbrederis departed.

Abbrederis leads the Badgers in receiving.  He’s second in the Big Ten in receiving yards, averaging 107.7 yards per contest.

Illinois will not only have Abbrederis to contend with, they have struggled to stop the run.  The Illini currently ranks 11th in the Big Ten, allowing 195.4 yards per game.  They gave up 335 yards rushing to Nebraska earlier this month.
