Tyler Wahl made back-to-back threes in double-overtime to help 8th ranked Wisconsin hold off the Indiana Hoosiers 80-73 on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.  Wahl finished with a career high 12 points for the Badgers (10-2, 4-1 Big Ten).

Senior point guard D’Mitrik Trice had 21 points and seven assists to lead the Badgers.  Eleven of his 21 came in the final 1:03 and the two overtimes.  Nate Reuvers added 14 points and Micah Potter had 10 as Wisconsin won for the seventh time in the last eight games.

Wahl had been 2 of 9 on 3-point field goal attempts before Thursday as the Badgers extended their Kohl Center winning streak against the Hoosiers to 18 games.

Badger freshman guard Jonathan Davis had six points but matched his career high with eight rebounds and a career-best three steals while playing a career-high 41 minutes.

Indiana (7-5, 2-3) was led by Trayce Jackson-Davis, who scored 23 points on 10-of-16 shooting.  Jackson-Davis had 16 points in the second half, but just one point in the two overtimes.  He came into the game averaging 20.3 points a game [Read more…]

Badgers drop home finale to Indiana

December 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers managed just two short Collin Larsh field goals (29, 28 yds) on Saturday and fell to the Indiana Hoosiers 14-6 in the final game of the season at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers (2-2) have one game left in the regular season, a road trip to Iowa to face the rival Hawkeyes this Saturday.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz finished 20 of 34 for 202 yards with an interception and a fumble.

Freshman tailback Jalen Berger made his first start and ran for 87 yards on 15 carries.

The difference in this defensive battle was red zone efficiency.  Indiana was 2 for 2 with a pair of touchdowns, while the Badgers went 2 for 3, setting for two field goals.

The Badgers had one final chance to score and potentially tie the game, but their last minute drive stalled at the Hoosier 17 yard line when Graham Mertz fourth-down throw to Chimere Dike fell incomplete with 46 seconds left to play.

Wisconsin’s defense held Indiana to 87 yards rushing, marking the third-consecutive game UW has held its opponent below 100 yards.

Big Ten Scoreboard

Penn State 23, Rutgers 7
Ohio State 52, Michigan State 12
Iowa 35, Illinois 21
Nebraska 37, Purdue 27

Badgers clinch share of Big Ten title, capture top seed in Conference Tournament

March 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers capped off a 9-point second half comeback to beat Indiana 60-56, securing a share of the Big Ten regular season title on Saturday in Bloomington.

After an 18-point loss to the Minnesota Gophers on Feb. 5, the Badgers (21-10, 14-6 Big Ten) have reeled off a Big Ten leading eight straight victories to grab a share of the conference title with Maryland and Michigan State.  The Badgers will enter the Big Ten Tournament this week as the number-1 seed.

The Badgers outscored the Hoosiers 16-5 over the final 6 minutes and 34 seconds.

Nate Reuvers led all scorers with 17 points.  Teammate Micah Potter added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

After a locker room celebration, Greg Gard brought his assistant coaches, Dean Oliver, Joe Krabbenhoft and Alando Tucker to the podium with him.

The Badgers have overcome adversity before and during the season, on their way to the Big Ten title.  Gard said their season went from tragic to magic and they’re not done yet.

The Badgers get a double-bye into the tournament’s quarterfinals.  They’ll open on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis, against the winner of Thursday’s second round game between #8-seed Rutgers and #9-seed Michigan.

Badgers climb into tie for the Big Ten lead

March 5, 2020 By Bill Scott

The 24th ranked Wisconsin Badgers have come a long way, moving into a tie for the Big Ten lead with Maryland and Michigan State with one game left to play in the regular season.  The Badgers (20-10, 13-6 Big Ten) knocked off Northwestern 63-48.

Nate Reuvers scored 11 points to lead the Badgers, who shot just 39% from the field, but four other players scored 9-points each (Brevin Pritzl, Aleem Ford, Brad Davison and Micah Potter) in the win.

The Badgers finished 8 of 25 (32%) from three-point range, but won their seventh straight game and 20th of the season.  Wisconsin has now won 20 or more games in four of Greg Gard’s five seasons as head coach.  Gard also collected his 100th career victory (100-57) in Madison.

The Badgers have gone from a 5-5 start in December to a three-way tie for the Big Ten lead.  They’ll close out the regular season at Indiana on Saturday and can wrap up at least a share of the Big Ten title with a win.

Badger women’s volleyball wins 12th straight Big Ten match

November 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

The 4th-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team made history on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Indiana to get its twelfth consecutive win to start Big Ten play.  The Badgers (16-4 overall, 12-0 BIG) blew past the Hoosiers (12-13, 1-11) in dominating fashion, taking the match 25-18, 25-12 and 25-17.

Badgers miss chances on the road, fall in OT

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between the Badgers and Hoosiers in Bloomington was like a trip to the dentist.  It was painful to watch and seemed at times like nobody really wanted the win.

But when the dust settled, it was the Hoosiers that ended their five-game losing streak, knocking off the Badgers 75-73 in double overtime.

Freshman Romeo Langford’s driving layup in the final second gave the Hoosiers the victory, just their second since January 3rd.

Langford’s game winner came after D’Mitrik Trice hit three free throws with 9.6 seconds left to tie the game 73-73.

The Badgers (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) hit just 13 of 25 free throws, including just 5 of 11 in the second overtime.  They missed a chance to tie Maryland (21-7, 12-5) for fourth place in the Big Ten.  Instead, they’re a full game back with three to play.

Maryland faces Penn State on Wednesday night.  The Nittany Lions are in Madison to face the Badgers on Saturday. [Read more…]

Georgia is the next stop for Tom Crean

March 16, 2018 By Bill Scott

After nine seasons at Marquette and nine more at Indiana, Tom Crean has his next building project.  Crean was hired as the next head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.  ESPN’s Adrina Wojnarowski reported the deal is for six years.

Crean spent the last year as an analyst for ESPN after being fired at Indiana following an 18-16 season in Bloomington in 2016-17.

Georgia has a news conference scheduled for Friday afternoon to make the announcement official.

Crean’s hiring comes one day after former Ohio State coach Thad Matta withdrew from the Georgia coaching search.

Mark Fox was fired on Saturday after making just two NCAA Tournament appearances in his nine seasons.

While at Indiana, Crean led the Hoosiers into the NCAA Tournament four times, reaching the Sweet 16 three times.

Taylor named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

November 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

Jonathan Taylor

For the fifth time this season, Wisconsin running back Jonathan Taylor has been named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week.

Taylor carried the ball 29 times for 183 yards and a touchdown in the Badger’s 45-17 win over Indiana, topping the 100-yard rushing mark for the sixth time in nine career games.

Taylor scored on a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, his Big Ten-leading 12th rushing score of the season.

Taylor’s 5th Big Ten Freshman of the Week award ties him for third-most in conference history alongside Penn State’s Christian Hackenbert (2013) and trailing only Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett (seven honors in 2014) and Illinois’ Nathan Scheelhaase (six in 2010).

Taylor and the Badgers will face the Iowa Hawkeyes this Saturday (2:30 p.m.) at Camp Randall Stadium.  The Hawkeyes are coming off of a 55-24 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday in Iowa City.

Hawkeyes quarterback Nate Stanley threw for 226 yards and five touchdowns and Josh Jackson added three interceptions for the Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten).
