Badgers clinch spot in Big Ten title game

November 12, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin defense played its best game of the season and the Badgers clinched a spot in the Big Ten Championship game by rolling over the Iowa Hawkeyes 38-14 in front of a crowd of 80,462 on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers secured a share of the Big Ten West Division championship for the second straight season and the third time in the last four years.  Bucky earned its 5th berth in the Big Ten Championship game in the event’s 7-year history.

UW (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) became the first team in program history to win its first 10 games.  It also marked the first time since 2008 that the home team has won in this rivalry.

Iowa (6-4, 3-4) saw its two game win streak come to an end.

Wisconsin’s defense was on top of their game from start to finish, holding the Hawkeyes to 20 yards on 23 plays in the opening half.  The Badgers led 17-7 at halftime.

When the Badgers scored for the last time with just over seven minutes to play, the Hawkeyes had just 46 yards on 43 plays.  Iowa finished with 66 yards on 50 plays and went 0-for-13 on third downs.

Menomonie’s Nate Stanley entered the game with 22 touchdowns and only four interceptions.  He finished 8 of 24 for 41 yards and one pick. [Read more…]

Badgers unable to hang on to lead, fall to Iowa

The Wisconsin Badgers certainly weren’t setting the world on fire, but they did appear as if they would pick up a much needed Big Ten win to stay in the Big Ten title hunt.

Then a play here and play there, a couple of missed free throws and the heroics of an opposing freshman turned victory into defeat as the Iowa Hawkeyes escaped the Kohl Center with a 59-57 win over Wisconsin.

The Badgers suffered their third straight defeat and fifth in the last six games and will now play their final regular season game on Sunday against Minnesota in a battle for the 2-seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.  The Badgers can still secure that with a win on Senior Day.

Purdue clinched the Big Ten title outright with Wisconsin’s latest loss.

The Badgers led by nine points with 4 minutes and 46 seconds left.  They were up five with 2:03 left to play.  But two turnovers against Iowa’s full-court pressure and the Hawkeyes closed the game on a 7-0 run to pull out the win. [Read more…]

The two teams have split their 10 meetings since the Heartland Trophy was added to the rivalry in 2004.

The unranked Wisconsin Badgers won for the ninth time in their last ten games, knocking off 8th-ranked Iowa 67-59 at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday night.

Wisconsin became the first team to knock off the Hawkeyes in Iowa City this season and at ten-and-five in the Big Ten, clinched a winning conference record for the 16th straight season, equaling the longest streak in Big Ten history (Purdue also had a run of 16 straight seasons from 1972-88).

The Badgers (18-10, 10-5 Big Ten) outscored Iowa, eight-to-one, over the final one minute 40 seconds to notch their second road win against a top-10 team this season.  It’s the first time Wisconsin has accomplished that since 1955.

The Badgers bench outscored the Hawkeyes bench 23-4.  Khalil Iverson and Jordan Hill scored nine points each while Charlie Thomas added five points. [Read more…]
