Hockey Badgers earn another weekend split

November 27, 2017 By Bill Scott

Seamus Malone

After falling behind early, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team rebounded to knock off Mercyhurst (5-5-2, 2-2-2 Atlantic Hockey) on Sunday at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin (9-6-2, 3-2-1 Big Ten) outshot the Lakers 45-26 while recording 21 blocks to MU’s 14.

It was the Badgers’ first comeback victory this season, as the Lakers opened the scoring at the 16:23 mark of the first period.  Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead into the first period intermission.

Badger freshman forward Sean Dhooghe scored his second career goal at 1:31 of the second period on the power play.  Dhooghe was crashing the net and jammed home a rebound to tie the game 1-1.

Wisconsin took the lead for good late in the second period when junior Seamus Malone picked up his own rebound and found the back of the net to make it 2-1.

Will Johnson and Jake Linhart scored third period goals for the Badgers to close out the scoring.

Malone ended with a goal and two assists, ending the weekend with four points.

Sophomore goaltender Jack Berry recorded 24 saves for his second win of the season.

The Badgers lost 3-2 to the Lakers on Saturday.  They return to Big Ten play this weekend, heading to Minneapolis for Friday-Saturday games against the rival Gophers.

Granato named Big Ten Coach of the Year

Tony Granato

Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey coach Tony Granato was named the Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Badgers to a second place finish in the league this season.

Granato’s Badgers are 19-14-1 entering the Big Ten Tournament in Detroit this week.  That’s an 11-win improvement over last season, when the Badgers finished last in the conference.

Granato joins the late Bob Johnson, who was the WCHA’s Coach of the Year in 1977.

The Badgers also had three players named to the all-Big Ten second team, forwards Luke Kunin and Trent Frederic and defenseman Jake Linhart.  Frederic was also named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Kunin leads the Badger in scoring with 21 goals and 36 points.  Frederic is second with 15 goals and 33 points.  Both are first-round NHL draft picks and Kunin served as the Badgers captain in this, his sophomore season.

Minnesota’s Tyler Sheehy, who shared Big Ten scoring honors this season, was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Year.

Wisconsin’s Grant Besse scored the game tying goal with 42-seconds left as the Badgers forged a 2-2 tie with Northern Michigan in the season opener at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin pulled goaltender Adam Miller with a minute to play, before Besse found the back of the net.

The Badgers found the net again in the closing seconds, but an official review showed the whistle blew before the puck crossed the line.  Neither team scored in the overtime.

Miller had 19 saves in the final period to keep the Badgers in the game.  He finished with 32 saves.  Sophomore Jake Linhart scored Wisconsin’s first goal in the second period.

Seamus Malone and Kevin Schulze each had two assists.
