Packers hit bump in the road in Los Angeles

November 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Matt LaFleur

Just when everyone was telling the Green Bay Packers how good they are, they went out and laid an egg, falling to the Los Angeles Chargers 26-11 on Sunday afternoon, bring to an end their four-game winning streak.

Packers fans out-numbered Chargers fans in a visiting stadium, but the Packers played their worst offensive game of the season and the defense and special teams weren’t much better.

The Packers had no answers for the Chargers defensive pressure and any adjustments came way too late to make a difference.

The Packers offense had been making steady progress and playing at a high level.  Then they got their top receiver, Davante Adams, back from a turf toe injury that saw him miss four games.

The Packers only had three possessions in the first half and they stalled out for a number of reasons, including penalties. [Read more…]

Packers comeback beats Lions in MNF

October 15, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mason Crosby

Mason Crosby’s chip-shot 23-yard field goal as time expired gave the Green Bay Packers a 23-22 win over the Detroit Lions in Monday Night Football action at Lambeau Field.

After the ball sailed through the uprights, Crosby took a Lambeau Leap, the first of his 13-year career.  Or perhaps it could be called a Lambeau Lift as Crosby needed help from a teammate to climb into the stands.

Playing once again without injured wide receiver Davante Adams (turf toe), Aaron Rodgers completed 24 of 39 for 283 yards and two touchdowns.  The second of those two touchdowns went to Allen Lazard, good for the first touchdown catch in his brief two-year career. [Read more…]

Packers suffer first loss under LaFleur

September 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

Nigel Bradham intercepted a tipped Aaron Rodgers pass in the end zone in the final minute as the Philadelphia Eagles held off the Green Bay Packers comeback attempt 34-27 at Lambeau Field.

Carson Wentz threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns to help the Eagles even their record at 2-2.  Jordan Howard led the Eagles ground attack with 87 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns.  He also caught a touchdown pass.

Rodgers threw for 422 yards, two scores and his first pick of the season.  He completed 34 of 53 but lost a fumble and threw the pick at the end.  Davante Adams caught 10 passes for 180 yards in defeat, but left the game late with a toe injury.

Adams isn’t the only starter that left early.  Running back Jamaal Williams was carted off on a stretcher on [Read more…]

Packers pressure Broncos to improve to 3-0

September 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers defense did it again, forcing three more turnovers and sacking quarterback Joe Flacco six times, on the way to a 27-16 win over the Denver Broncos at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The Packers defense hasn’t been perfect, allowing 149 rushing yards against the Broncos and a 4.91 yards per carry average in the first three games.  But so far, pressure on the quarterback has made up for the inability to stop the run, giving the Packers a 3-0 start to the season.

Preston Smith led the way with three sacks, including a strip sack of Joe Flacco with rookie Rashan Gary recovering the fumble and setting up a Packers touchdown.

Za’Darius Smith had two sacks and Gary would later add the first of his career.  Second year cornerback Jaire Alexander stripped a ball away from tight end Noah Fant and recovered it at the same time.  That set up a short touchdown drive. [Read more…]

Rodgers leads Packers to first road victory

December 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers put together his best performance of the season, leading the Green Bay Packers to a 44-38 overtime victory the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Sunday.

Rodgers passed for 442 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for two more scores as the Packers won their first road game (1-7) of the season.  They avoided being the first team since the 1958 squad to go winless on the road during the season.

The Packers trailed by 15-points in the fourth quarter before coming from behind to win.

Davante Adams caught the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime.  Jamaal Williams also rushed for 95 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown and caught six passes for 61 yards, improving to 6-8-1 on the season.

New York’s Jason Myers booted a late field goal to force overtime for the Jets.  But the Packers won the coin toss and marched 75 yards for the game winning touchdown, not giving the Jets a chance at the ball in OT. [Read more…]

Packers miss playoffs for second straight year

December 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

The chances of making the playoffs for the Green Bay Packers were not very good going into Sunday’s game, the likely reality became official when they lost to the Chicago Bears 24-17 and then saw it become official when the Vikings knocked off the Miami Dolphins in Minnesota.

The Bears captured the NFC North title for the first time since 2010 while the Packers missed out on the playoffs for the second straight season.  It’s the first time the Packers have gone back-to-back seasons without a spot in the playoffs in 18 years.

Aaron Rodgers NFL-record streak of 402 straight pass attempts without an interception came to an end in the fourth quarter when Bears safety Eddie Jackson picked off a deflected pass in the end zone.

Last year, the Packers season went south when Brett Hundley started nine games for an injured Rodgers.  But this year, Rodgers has started all fourteen games so far. [Read more…]

Packers upset bid falls short in L.A.

October 29, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

The Green Bay Packers played well enough to win, but a couple of mistakes at crucial times was once again the difference between victory and defeat.  The Packers had the Rams on the ropes, but the only remaining unbeaten team in the NFL stayed that way, beating the Packers 29-27 in Los Angeles.

The Packers defense held the Rams offense to six points in the first half and while they let up a little in the second half, they deserved a better fate.

The Packers did allow the Rams to take the lead late, on a Greg Zuerlein 34-yard field goal.  But Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was going to get the ball back with 2:05 left to play, needing only a field goal to take the lead and win.

Unfortunately for the Packers, Rodgers would never get that chance.  That’s because Ty Montgomery, who was ordered to not bring out the ensuing kickoff, did so anyway and fumbled on the play.  The Rams recovered and ran out the clock. [Read more…]

Sloppy performance leads to Packers loss

September 24, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mo Wilkerson could be lost for the season

The Washington Redskins jumped out to a quick lead and held on to knock off the Green Bay Packers 31-17 in DC on Sunday.

The Redskins racked up 323 yards and 28 points in the first half, taking a 28-10 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Packers defense tightened in the second half, but the offense had problems with dropped passes and penalties and never could get on track.

Even Aaron Rodgers struggled with his accuracy early and finished 27-44 for 265 yards and two touchdowns.  Wide receiver Randall Cobb had one of his worst days as a pro, dropping two passes and fumbling.  Prior to the fumble, the Packers were driving with 5 1/2 minutes left to play and a touchdown would have closed the gab to four points.

The Packers have played in rain and snow and cold before, yet they struggled to handle the wet conditions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Packers Hall of Fame to honor a pair of Packers later this month

July 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame announced that Davante Adams will be honored with the Hall’s Most Valuable Player award and running back Jamaal Williams will be honored with the Rookie of the Year award at the 48th Packers Hall of Fame Induction Banquet.

Adams had a team leading 74 receptions for a team-high 885 yards and 10 touchdowns, and was selected to his first career Pro Bowl as an injury replacement.  In his fourth year as a pro, Adams was tied for No. 2 in the NFL in TD receptions, and he has 22 receiving TD’s since 2016.

Williams was selected by the Packers with the second of two fourth-round choices in the 2017 NFL Draft, becoming the first BYU running back picked by Green Bay in team history.  He played in all 16 games with seven starts, seeing time on offense and special teams.  He rushed for a team-high 556 yards over the course of the season, the fourth most by a Green Bay rookie in team history.

Former players Ryan Longwell and Mark Tauscher will become the newest members of the Hall at the banquet, to be held July 21st in the Lambeau Field Atrium.

Hundley did his job, keeping the Packers in the playoff picture

December 11, 2017 By Bill Scott

If Aaron Rodgers returns to the Green Bay Packers lineup this week against the Carolina Panthers, they’ll be in the position most would have hoped for when backup Brett Hundley took over eight weeks ago.

The Packers and their fans were hoping Hundley would keep the Packers in playoff contention, allowing Rodgers to return with a chance to get the Packers into the postseason.

After Hundley led the Packers to another comeback win on Sunday, 27-21 over the Cleveland Browns in overtime, he admitted himself that the goal was to keep the Packers in the thick of things.  He’s won three games since taking over.

Hundley had his best day yet, completing 35 of 46 for 265 yards and three touchdowns.  The Packers came from 21-7 down to win it.  It’s a franchise record third time in one season that the Packers have rebounded to win a game after being down by 14 or more points.

Davante Adams caught a pair of touchdown passes, the first coming with :17 left to play in regulation to force overtime and the second coming with the Packers already in field goal position.  Adams caught a pass and broke a tackle, out-racing the Browns to the end zone for the game winning score.
