Jones announces his retirement from the NFL

September 7, 2017 By Bill Scott

James Jones

Former Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones announced his retirement on Wednesday, following a nine-year NFL career.

Jones played in 62 games over eight seasons with the Packers, scoring a total of 51 touchdowns (45 with the Packers).  he led the NFL with 14 touchdown receptions in 2012 with the Packers.

Jones final year in the league was 2015.  He returned to Lambeau Field after being cut by the New York Giants before the start of the season.  Jones provided the Packers with some insurance after Jordy Nelson went down with a season ending knee injury.

Jones was a third round pick of the Packers in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Jones will not return to Green Bay

James Jones will not be back with the Green Bay Packers this fall.  His agent, Frank Bauer, says the Packers have told him they’ll go with younger receivers, and they will not re-sign the 31-year-old Jones after he came back for a second stint with the Packers last September following Jordy Nelson’s torn A-C-L.

Green Bay has five receivers age-25 and younger, and the 30-year-old Nelson is the oldest of the group.

General Manager Ted Thompson is counting on better seasons from Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb while continuing to develop Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis.

Packers clinch playoff spot, Rodgers not happy with offense

The Green Bay Packers had little going in the first half offensively, they were terrible in short yardage, third-downs continue to be a mess and scored a touchdown on just one of five trips inside the red zone.  But in the end, the Packers won their 10th game and clinched a playoff spot for the seventh straight season, which is a franchise record.

Clinching a spot in the playoffs should be cause for celebration, but not everybody showed the enthusiasm of the moment, especially quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

The Packers struggled to muster a ground game with Eddie Lacy and James Starks.  They went with Randall Cobb in the backfield on at least one key drive in the second half.  It covered 92 yards on 19 plays, but the Packers still had to settle for a field goal.

Aaron Rodgers said he wasn’t pleased with the offense and when asked why, he sais, “We weren’t very effective. We had less than 300 yards. We had a terrible first half.” [Read more…]

Packers back in control of NFC North (AUDIO)

The Green Bay Packers marched into the Twin Cities and took what was theirs.  They reclaimed control of the NFC North with Sunday’s dominating 30-13 win over the Minnesota Vikings at TCF Bank Stadium.

When the dust settled on Sunday, the Packers and Vikings both boast records of 7-3, but the Packers now own the head-to-head tiebreaker if the playoffs were to start today.

The Packers saw their three-game losing streak come to an end and the Vikings five-game win streak is also history.

There were several key factors in this game.  On defense, the Packers held Adrian Peterson to 45 rushing yards, holding him well below his average against Green Bay. [Read more…]

Packers win, but the streak is over

The Green Bay Packers went head-to-head with one of the top defensive fronts in the NFL and won, pulling out a 24-10 victory over the St. Louis Rams at Lambeau Field.

The Packers defense gave up 159 rushing yards to Todd Gurley, but they held Nick Foles to just 141 yards passing, completing just 11 of 30 passes.  Foles was held to one touchdown and the Packers secondary picked him off four times.

Two of those interceptions came from rookie Quinten Rollins, the first of which was returned 45 yards for a touchdown, giving the Packers a 14-0 lead.

The defense continues to stand out, sacking Foles three times, but getting 12 more hits on the [Read more…]

The Green Bay Packers erased memories of  three straight crushing losses at Seattle with a 27-17 victory over the Seahawks at Lambeau Field on Sunday night.

The Packers blew a 13-3 lead, but came back with eleven unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull out the victory.

Aaron Rodgers completed 25-of-33 for 249 yards and two touchdowns.  One touchdown pass came to James Jones and the deciding score in the fourth quarter went to tight end Richard Rodgers with 9:28 left to play.

The Packers sealed their victory with a one-handed interception by Jayrone Elliott.   Then Elliott forced a fumble that was recovered by Micah Hyde with 22 seconds left to play. [Read more…]

Packers beat Bears but look to improve

The Green Bay Packers opened the N-F-L regular season with a 31-23 win over the Chicago Bears at Soldiers Field.  It’s the first season opening win for the Packers in four years.

The game was tight most of the way and Jay Cutler had the Bears driving inside Packers territory.  That is where Cutler did what he has historically done in this series, commit a costly turnover.  This time it was Clay Matthews dropping into coverage from his inside linebacker position, reading Cutler’s throw and stepping in front for an interception to save the day.

The Packers have picked off Cutler at least once every time he has started against them since joining the Bears in 2009.  In 12 career regular season games, Cutler has now thrown 22-interceptions against the Packers. [Read more…]

White released to make room for Jones

September 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoMyles White finally made the Green Bay Packers 53-man roster in his third year with the team.  Unfortunately for him, the Packers went out and signed WR James Jones who had been released on Saturday by the New York Giants and needed to trim one more player.  That player turned out to be White.

White led the Packers with 16 catches for 157 yards and a pair of touchdown receptions during the preseason.  His work solidified the number-5 spot and drew constant praise from head coach Mike McCarthy.

White originally joined the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2013 but missed the cut coming out of training camp in both 2013 and 2014.  He was signed back to the practice squad each season.

White will have to clear waivers for the Packers bring him back to the practice squad again, but White may look for work elsewhere, not having made it with the Packers for a third straight year.

Packers sign Jones to a one-year deal

September 6, 2015 By Bill Scott

Wide receiver James Jones was released by the New York Giants on Saturday.  After clearing waivers, he got the call from the Packers.  He flew into Green Bay on Sunday and signed a one-year deal with the Packers.

The Packers already have five receivers on their roster.  It isn’t clear if they’ll add a sixth, or release one of the five they have.  They’ll have to make a cut on Monday.

Jones caught 73 passes for the Oakland Raiders last season,  totaling 666 yards and six touchdowns.  He played in 14 games with ten starts.

Three seasons ago (2012), Jones caught and NFL best 14 touchdown passes.

The Packers could insert Jones into the three spot, behind Randall Cobb and Davante Adams.  But Jones has had a good connection with Aaron Rodgers during his career and there’s no reason to think that won’t happen again.  He’s only one year removed from the system he played in during the first seven years of his NFL career.
