Nelson is in the fold, will Cobb be next?

July 28, 2014 By Bill Scott

When it came time to deciding which of the receivers to sign first, the Green Bay Packers gave Jordy Nelson a four-year contract extension worth nearly $40 million.

One would assume that Randall Cobb would be next.

But Cobb said he has a lot to prove.

Following Sunday’s practice, Cobb said, “I don’t believe I’ve done enough, and I think that’s on me.”

Cobb missed 10 weeks last season with a leg injury (broken leg).  In 2012, he caught 80 passes for 954 yards and eight touchdowns.

Cobb returned to catch the game-winning touchdown pass at Chicago in Week 17, but one wonders if the Packers want to see more from Cobb before they back up the truck and give him a big contract.

There doesn’t appear to be any serious talks between Cobb’s agent and the Packers.

Cobb has seen how the business side of professional football can go with Donald Driver, Greg Jennings and James Jones.  He said, “I don’t believe any of us are deserving of anything.  So I’m going to continue to be the person I am, do what I’m supposed to do and when that time comes, if it comes, it’ll be a blessing.”

Another example of what’s wrong in the NFL

February 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

The agent for free agent wide receiver James Jones told the

James Jones

James Jones

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he doesn’t think Ted Thompson wants his client back with the Green Bay Packers once the free agent signing period begins on March 11.

It’s one of the things wrong with pro football today.

There’s not a player in the Green Bay locker room that played harder and the team always came first.  Jones didn’t complain about opportunities and didn’t fall back on excuses when things weren’t going well.  While he missed two games with a knee injury last season, he played the last two with two broken ribs.

Back in the day, a player like Jones would have likely spent his entire career with the Packers.  But with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb in front of him on the receiver depth chart and talent young receivers like Jarrett Boykin ready to burst onto the scene, there just isn’t room for a free agent receiver looking to be rewarded for his play, not to mention his great attitude and toughness. James Jones says he played with broken ribs

January 8, 2014 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones wound up playing the last two games of

James Jones

James Jones

the season with two broken ribs.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jones revealed at a charity appearance in Greenfield yesterday that he broke the ribs in the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 22 and was spitting up blood the next day.

Jones had two catches for 20 yards in Sunday’s Wild Card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.  He had six catches for 41 yards against the Bears in the regular season finale.

Jones will be a free agent but said he’d like to return to Green Bay and play for the Packers.

Jones not sure where his future is

January 6, 2014 By Bill Scott

James Jones isn’t sure where his football future will take him, but he plans to spend a month or more decompressing with his family before he

James Jones

starts getting back into the football swing of things.

Jones will be an unrestricted free agent and it’s uncertain just what the Green Bay Packers thought process is about having him remain a part of the outstanding Packers’ receiving group.

Jones is one of the higher profile players set to hit free agency, joining players like Jermichael Finley, Evan Dietrich-Smith, Sam Shields, B.J. Raji, Ryan Pickett and Johnny Jolly.  Add Mike Neal, John Kuhn and Andrew Quarless to that list as well.

Jones was an unrestricted free agent three years ago as well.  He returned to the Packers, but that was a totally different deal.

AUDIO: Jones said things are different this time :11

Jones is also a different player than he was three years ago, from the standpoint of numbers along.  He’s become more of a consistent, productive, go-to player.

Jones and the Packers almost had another week of playoff football to concern themselves with.  They took the 49ers to the wire and lost 23-20 when Phil Dawson booted a 33-yard field goal, his 3rd of the day, to win it for San Francisco.

Injuries mounting for the Packers

October 15, 2013 By Bill Scott

The injuries continue to mount for the Green Bay Packers.  Coach Mike McCarthy said

James Jones may be able to play Sunday after spraining his PCL on Sunday at Baltimore.  That’s where the good news stops.

Fellow wide receiver Randall Cobb could miss 6 to 8 weeks with a fractured right fibula.  The Packers also thought linebacker Nick Perry had a sprained ankle.  That turned into a broken foot.  Perry could miss 6 weeks as well.

The Packers are off today.  They’ll return to work on Wednesday and start preparing for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

Franklin’s fumble is the final blunder for the Packers

September 23, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals each committed four turnovers on

Johnathan Franklin

Johnathan Franklin

Sunday, the final of which led to Terence Newman’s 58-yard fumble return for the game-winning touchdown.  It gave the Bengals a 34-30 win over the Packers.

On 4th and 1, Mike McCarthy decided to go for it with 3:47 left to play and the result wasn’t a good one.  McCarthy  admitted to thinking about kicking the field goal but changed his mind and went for it.  McCarthy was down to his final running back, rookie Johnathan Franklin, who tried to dive over the pile with an up the middle run, only to fumble on the way up.  Newman eventually ended up with the ball and he did the rest.

The Bengals then finished things off when Michael Johnson batted down Aaron Rodgers’ fourth down pass at the Cincinnati 20-yard line with 1:21 left to play and they ran out the clock. [Read more…]

Packers: Could there be three with 1,000?

September 19, 2013 By Bill Scott

If the Green Bay Packers maintain their current offensive pace, receivers James Jones,

James Jones

James Jones

Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb could all surpass 1,000 receiving yards.

In the first two games, Cobb has 16 receptions for 236 yards, Nelson has 10 receptions for 196 yards and Jones has 11 catches for 178 yards.  All three are on pace to fly past 1,000 yards on the season.

Jones actually made the prediction during OTA’s and Rodgers said it’s attainable.

Rodgers day started with pain in the neck

September 16, 2013 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers tied a franchise record for single game passing yardage, throwing for

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

480 yards and four touchdowns in the Green Bay Packers 38-20 win over the Washington Redskins at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

The most amazing thing about Rodgers performance is that it came with a sore neck.  Rodgers said he slept wrong at the hotel the night before the game and had to receive some treatment on his neck when he arrived at Lambeau Field on Sunday morning.

You would never have known he wasn’t feeling well based on his production throughout the game. [Read more…]

Players will have to adjust to knee and thigh pads

July 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

James Jones

James Jones

With player safety being a big focus of the NFL recently, it is no surprise that league is making it mandatory that all players wear all the required pads in 2013.  This includes knee and thigh pads which players have shoved in their locker for years.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy is making sure his guys are use to this by the time the season rolls around.  He is requiring all players to where the required pads in all practices.  As for McCarthy’s thoughts on the rule?

Packers still have plenty of cap room

April 30, 2013 By Bill Scott

After Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews signed their blockbuster extensions, the

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers still have plenty of salary cap space.

Rodgers’ five-year, $110-million extension gives him $54-million in guaranteed money, including a $35-million signing bonus.  Rodgers will also earn $9.5-million roster bonuses in both 2014 and 2015.

The Packers have just over $13.5-million in cap room.  They’ll need somewhere between $5-million and $6-million to sign their draft choices and undrafted free agents.  That gives them roughly $7-million to use on contract extensions for players like B.J. Raji, James Jones and Sam Shields if they wish.  They can also hold on to some cash in the event they would need to sign a player(s) to fill in for any players that might suffer long-term or season ending injuries.
