New England Patriots running back and former Wisconsin Badger, James White, who scored three touchdowns in their Super Bowl win over Atlanta, has reached agreement on a three-year contract extension with the team.

White, who was set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2017 season, is now under contract through the 2020 season.

The 2016 season was White’s first full year as the team’s top “passing back”, finishing the season second on the team with 60 receptions for 551 yards and five touchdowns.  He also rushed for 166 yards on 39 carries.

In Super Bowl LI, White had 14 receptions for 110 yards and one receiving touchdown.  He also added six rushes for 29 yards and two touchdowns.

The 25-year-old White was a fourth-round pick by the Patriots out of Wisconsin.

Badgers bowl losing streak hits four (AUDIO)

January 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

Gary Anderson’s first bowl game as the head coach of the Wisconsin Badgers

Melvin Gordon

Melvin Gordon

didn’t go according to plan.

The 19th ranked Badgers had no answer for (8) South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw, who completed 22 of 25 passes for 312 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Shaw also caught a touchdown pass and rushed for a fifth as the Gamecocks beat another Big Ten team in a bowl game and won an 11th game for the third straight season.

The Badgers ended their season with two straight defeats and finished 9-4.  That’s four straight bowl defeats for the Badgers, which means the current group of 22 seniors has never finished a season at Wisconsin with a victory.

In Wisconsin’s regular season ending loss to Penn State, they didn’t get enough from their passing game.  That was the case again yesterday.  Joel Stave left with a shoulder injury late in the third quarter, but even when he was in the game, the Badgers offered little threat down field.  Stave finished 9 of 13 for 80 yards and two touchdowns and one interception. Gordon announces he’ll return to Wisconsin

December 21, 2013 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin’s red shirt sophomore tailback Melvin Gordon says he’ll return to Wisconsin for his junior season.

Melvin Gordon

The second-team All-Big Ten pick rushed for 1,466 yards and 12 touchdowns this past season.

Gordon had submitted paperwork to the NFL’s draft advisory board earlier this month, trying to see where he might be taken in the 2014 NFL Draft.  But Gordon said he’d only consider leaving early if he received a third-round grade or lower.

Gordon rushed for at least 140 yards in seven of Wisconsin’s 12 games this season.

Wisconsin used senior James White as a blocker and receiver and Gordon could use work in both of those areas.  He decided it’s better to get that work in college instead of the NFL.

Gordon figures to be the feature back next season in Madison, but he’s also expected to share time with freshman Corey Clement, who finished his first season in Madison with 515 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground.

Gordon and his Badger teammates are preparing for the New Years Day Capital One Bowl game against South Carolina in Orlando.

Borland was among six Wisconsin players who garnered first or second team honors.

Senior wide receiver Jared Abbrederis was a consensus first-team pick for the second straight season.

November 17, 2013 By Bill Scott

So much for the vaunted Indiana offense giving the 17th ranked Badger defense a run for their money.

On a rainy, foggy day in Madison, the Badgers rolled to a 51-3 win over the Hoosiers, before 77,849 at Camp Randall.  Wisconsin improved to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten, while the Hoosiers fell to 4-6 and 2-4.In his pregame speech, Wisconsin coach Gary Anderson asked his players to “start fast and stay steady”.  A 93-yard touchdown run by James White on Wisconsin’s first offensive play took care of the fast start and a steady display of offensive and defensive dominance took care of the steady part.

A year ago, the Badgers rushed for a school record 564 yards in a 62-14 win over the Hoosiers in Bloomington.  They almost beat that total on Saturday, rushing for 554 yards on 50 carries (11.1 ypc avg.).

Wisconsin finished with 676 yards of offense, the second-highest total in school history.  The Badgers have had 600 yard days in three of the last six meetings with the Hoosiers.  Wisconsin’s school record of 705 yards came against Indiana in 1999.

James White rushed for a career high 205 yards on 20 carries.  Melvin Gordon added 146 yards on 13 carries for the Badgers.

Wisconsin runs through Nebraska on the way to Pasadena

December 3, 2012 By Bill Scott

Last week, many were questioning whether the (then) 7-5 Wisconsin Badger Football team deserved a spot in the Big Ten Title Game.  After Saturday’s 70-31 win over Nebraska at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Badgers validated their appearance and punched their ticket to a third straight Rose Bowl.

Wisconsin will take on #6 Stanford, the Pac-12 Champions, January 1st in Pasadena.   The Badgers will be the first Big Ten team since the 1977 to 1979 Michigan Wolverines to play in three straight Rose Bowls.

Wisconsin did all their damage on the ground.  The Badgers piled up 539 rushing yards, the most ever given up by a Nebraska team.  Melvin Gordon racked up 216 yards on 9 carries, Montee Ball added 202 yards on 21 carriers while James White added 109 yards on 15 carries.  The game marked the 2nd time Wisconsin had 3 players rush for over 100 yards and was the first time 2 players hit the 200 yard plateau.  The Badgers also set a school record with 8 rushing TDs.

Head coach Bielema impressed with record setting run game against Indiana

AUDIO: Bielema on Ball’s performance :13

Senior quarterback Curt Phillips, in his first collegiate start,  threw for only 41 yards and a touchdown, but added 68 yards on the ground.   Bielema’s plan was to keep the pressure off Phillips, but was impressed with the senior quarterback.
