Abbrederis is done in Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers reached an injury settlement with injured wide receiver Jared Abbrederis on Thursday.  It means his career in Green Bay as a member of the Packers is over.

Abbrederis was placed on injured reserve earlier this week with a quadriceps injury.  His playing time was limited this season and he finished with just one reception.

The former Wisconsin Badger and Wautoma, Wisconsin native had a good training camp and often drew praise from both Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers.  But he made the roster as the seventh receiver, which greatly limited his opportunities.

Abbrederis was a fifth round pick by the Packers on 2014.  He finished with 10 regular season receptions and added six catches in two playoff games last season.

Abbrederis’ release may not be the worst move for him.  Once he’s healed from his injury, he’ll have the opportunity to hook on with any other NFL team.  The opportunity he didn’t get in Green Bay, may come somewhere else.

Abbrederis placed on I.R., likely done for the season

The Green Bay Packers on Monday placed wide receiver Jared Abbrederis on injured reserve with a thigh contusion.  The move will likely end his season.

Abbrederis had a good training camp, one that drew strong reviews from quarterback Aaron Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy.  But once the regular season arrived, Abbrederis saw his chances diminish.

The former Badger got 14 snaps and caught one pass in the opener against Jacksonville but nothing since.  He didn’t play against the Bears on Thursday.

Abbrederis was the last of seven receivers on the team and so far, regular playing time has only gone to four of them.

The Packers can bring one player back from injured reserve after eight weeks, but it’s likely that both Sam Shields and Eddie Lacy would get the call before Abbrederis would.

More Moves

The Packers also placed safety and special teams player Chris Banjo on injured reserve, ending his season.  They also promoted wide receiver Geronimo Allison to the 53-man roster from their practice squad.

Packers fall to Chiefs, ready to shape their final 53-man roster (AUDIO)

The Green Bay Packers sat 17 starters, ten on offense and seven on defense, when they faced the Kansas City Chiefs in the preseason finale at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mike McCarthy’s goal was to give his backups one final shot to try to make the 53-man roster.  He also wanted to leave Kansas City without suffering any major injuries.  Having most of his starters on the sidelines would insure that.

The Packers fell 17-7 to the Chiefs.  The only Green Bay touchdown came in the first quarter when Joe Callahan threw a short touchdown pass to tight end Jared Cook.

The only significant injury in the game came early when Packers fifth-round draft pick Trevor Davis left with a shoulder injury and he didn’t return.  He appeared to be in position to make the Packers regular season roster, but this injury could change things. [Read more…]

Jones will not return to Green Bay

March 22, 2016 By Bill Scott

James Jones

James Jones will not be back with the Green Bay Packers this fall.  His agent, Frank Bauer, says the Packers have told him they’ll go with younger receivers, and they will not re-sign the 31-year-old Jones after he came back for a second stint with the Packers last September following Jordy Nelson’s torn A-C-L.

Green Bay has five receivers age-25 and younger, and the 30-year-old Nelson is the oldest of the group.

General Manager Ted Thompson is counting on better seasons from Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery and Randall Cobb while continuing to develop Jeff Janis and Jared Abbrederis.

Packers fall short of their goal, again!

January 17, 2016 By Bill Scott

For weeks, the Green Bay Packers defense has been the glue that held the ship together.  On Saturday night in the Arizona desert, when they needed the defense to stand tall one more time, they fell short and the Packers dropped their NFC Divisional Playoff matchup against the Cardinals 26-20.

The Packers tied the game, 20-20 on the final play of regulation, a 41-yard Hail Mary pass play from Aaron Rodgers to Jeff Janis.

But the Packers lost the coin toss and would their defense to hold Arizona to a field goal at the very least, to get an opportunity with the ball. [Read more…]

Abbrederis could be in line for more playing time

December 21, 2015 By Bill Scott

The adjustments made by the Green Bay Packers in the second half of Sunday’s 30-20 win over the Oakland Raiders, included more opportunities for former Badger wide receiver Jared Abbrederis.  The results could mean more playing time for the Wautoma native in the future.

Abbrederis was a part of the four-receiver set employed by coach Mike McCarthy in the second half.  He lined up in the slot and caught three passes for 33 yards.

Abbrederis plays the same slot receiver position as Randall Cobb, so his opportunities are somewhat limited.  But based on the way he played and the offense came alive in the second half, Mike McCarthy may need to find a way to get Abbrederis more involved in the offense moving forward.

Abbrederis returns to Packers practice field

Wide receiver Jared Abbrederis returned to the practice field on Sunday.  He’s back after missing a pair of games with rib and chest injuries suffered in the Green Bay Packers loss to the Detroit Lions on November 15.

Abbrederis took part in a short workout on Sunday as the Packers get ready to face the Lions in Detroit on Thursday night.

Abbrederis made four catches for 57 yards in the 18-16 loss to the Lions.  He left the game after a 32-yard catch that was followed by a big hit from Lions safety Glover Quin.

Abbrederis told reporters on Sunday that there is no timetable for his return.  He said some pain and discomfort is still present and didn’t offer any kind of timetable for his return.

Abbrederis is lost for several weeks

November 18, 2015 By Bill Scott

After catching four passes for 57 yards in last Sunday’s loss to Detroit, it appeared as if wide receiver Jared Abbrederis was finally starting to emerge in the Green Bay Packers offense.

But Abbrederis, whose 32-yard catch down the right sideline helped set up a Green Bay touchdown, left the game with what was described as a rib injury on the play.

According to coach Mike McCarthy at his Wednesday press conference, Abbrederis will miss several weeks.

It is the third significant injury for Abbrederis since he arrived in Green Bay.  His entire rookie season was lost after suffering an A-C-L injury.  Then the former Badger missed most of training camp this year with a concussion.

Abbrederis wasn’t in the Packers locker room to speak with reporters today.  On Monday, he declined to say whether he sustained broken ribs.  Missing several weeks would suggest he has.

Abbrederis takes a big step

Jared Abbrederis

After catching four passes for 57-yards in Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Jared Abbrederis is hoping to see more opportunities in the Green Bay Packers offense moving forward.

Abbrederis wasn’t about to suggest that he is the answer to the Packers offensive woes, but he clearly found away to get open and make plays when the Packers passing game was struggling.

Of course, Abbrederis also left the game after a jarring hit following a 32-yard reception down the right sideline that resulted in a rib injury. [Read more…]
