Badgers end 3-game slide against Hawkeyes

It took double-overtime but the Wisconsin Badgers held off the Iowa Hawkeyes 74-Ben Brust 170 at the Kohl Center last night.

Ben Brust scored 18 points and Jared Berggren added 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Badgers improved to 7-3 in the Big Ten and snapped a three-game losing streak against the Hawkeyes.

The Badgers, shooting under 62% from the free throw line on the season, hit 13 of 14 in overtime last night.

The Badgers were down 9 in the 2nd half before rallying to force overtime.

The victory allowed the Badgers (7-3 BigTen) to move into a 4th place tie with Ohio State.  They’re 1-game behind Michigan State and Michigan and 1 1/2 games behind Indiana.

The Badgers host 3rd ranked Michigan on Saturday (11am) at the Kohl Center.  Wisconsin’s next three games come against ranked 0pponents.

Badgers face Buckeyes in Columbus

Wisconsin (14-6, 5-2 Big Ten) and Ohio State (15-4, 5-2)  head into tonight’s Big Ten

matchup in Columbus tied for 4th place in the conference standings, but just a game behind co-leading Michigan and Indiana.

The Badgers are 3-3 against ranked opponents this season, including a 3-1 record against the Big Ten.

Every time Wisconsin hits the floor, they’re trying to get out of what’s been a season-long shooting slump.  The Badgers are hitting just 40% of their field goals in Big Ten play, to go along with a conference worst 52% from the free throw line. [Read more…]

Badgers battle Big Ten & themselves

afternoon.  They’ll not only be battling the rival Minnesota Gophers, but themselves as well.

Consistency on offense has been a problem for the Badgers this season.  Especially at the free throw line where Wisconsin is at 61% for the season and 52% in the Big Ten, which ranks last.

Badgers poor shooting is costly

Badgers are the worst free throw shooting team in the Big Ten Conference, hitting 7 of 18 last night in a 49-47 loss to 13th ranked Michigan State at the Kohl Center.

Throw in 29% shooting from the field and the Badgers couldn’t throw it in the ocean last night.

Even those that shoot it well, didn’t last night.  Jared Berggren entered the game last night, hitting nearly 76% of his free throws, but managed to make just 2 of 8 last night.

Badgers win despite ugly shooting

The Wisconsin Badgers continued shooting woes, yet found a way to beat Nebraska

47-41 to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten (11-4, 2-0 Big Ten).

Sunday marked the lowest point total in a Wisconsin Big Ten victory since a 35-29 win over Michigan State in 1951.

Wisconsin hit just 3 of its 13 free throws (23%).  The Badgers are shooting just 41% as a team in Big Ten play (16 of 39).

From three-point range, the Badgers hit just 4 of 17 (23.5%) and is hitting just 20.6% in league play through 2-games (7 of 34).

Jared Berggren scored 13 points and Ryan Evans added 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Badgers.

Defensively, Wisconsin held the Cornhuskers to 36.7% shooting, 33.3% in the second half.

The Badgers don’t play until Saturday when they host Illinois at the Kohl Center.

win their Big 10 Opener at the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin’s season long shooting slump continued for much of the game.  The Badgers shot 38% from the field, 17.6% from three-point range and 50% from the free throw line, yet still held off the Nittany Lions for their 10th win (10-4, 1-0) of the season.

Badgers tune up for Big Ten with rout over Samford

Just two days after the death of his mother, Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan led his Badgers to a 87-51 non-conference win over Samford at the Kohl Center.

Bo Ryan’s mother Louise Ryan passed away at the age of 86 in Florida.

Forward Mike Bruesewitz returned to the lineup (concussion) and scored a season high 13 points.  All 13 came in the first half when the Badgers (9-4) shot 58.1% from the floor.  They hit six 3-pointers, committed zero turnovers and jumped out to a 47-19 lead over Samford.

Sophomore Frank Kaminsky scored a career high 16 points to lead the Badgers.  Ryan Evans, Sam Dekker and Jared Berggren also scored in double figures.

The Badgers open Big Ten play Thursday against Penn State.

Badgers bounce back with win over Cal

The Badger Men’s Basketball Team returned to the win column Sunday as they blew-out California 81-56 in Madison.  Wisconsin lost their last time out at the Kohl Center 60-54 to Virginia.

Ben Brust had 22-points to lead the Badgers who opened the game with a 19-6 run in the first 9-minutes.  Jared Berggren added 18-points and 8-rebounds.  Freshman Sam Dekker added 12-points in 24-minutes off the bench.  Cal’s Allen Crabbe had a game high 25 in the Golden Bear’s first loss of the season.

Wisconsin is now 5-3 on the season.  They will be back on the floor Tuesday night when Omaha visits the Kohl Center.

Virginia bumps off Badgers at home

Cavaliers to a 60-54 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Kohl Center Wednesday night.

Virginia (5-2) extended its win streak to 4-games.  Tony Bennett’s Cavaliers handed Bo Ryan just his 7th home defeat in 92 nonconference games. 

The Badgers (4-3) got 15 points from Ben Brust and 12 from senior forward Jared Berggren.

Berggren scores 27 in Badger loss to Creighton

Jared Berggren scored 27 points for the Wisconsin Badgers (3-2) in their 84-74 loss to 14th ranked Creighton Bluejays in the Las Vegas Invitational Friday night.

Berggren, who averages 13.5 points per game, was one of three Badgers who hit the double digits in scoring.  Ryan Evans, who scored 15 points, and George Marshall, who scored 13 points, joined Berrgren.

Creighton’s Doug McDermott scored 30 points in the victory and was helped by two other Bluejays who hit the double-digit mark in scoring.  Austin Chatman scored 14 points and Ethan Wragge scored 17 for the Bluejays.

The Badgers’ Ryan Evans led the team in rebounds with eight while Doug McDermott and Gregory Echenique both had eight rebounds for the Bluejays.

The first half went back and forth between the two teams and halftime saw the Badgers in the lead by a score of 39-38.  With about six minutes to go in the game, Creighton went on a 11-2 run to put them in the driver’s seat.

With the win, Creighton moves into the finals of the Las Vegas Invitational, while the Wisconsin Badgers take on the Arkansas Razorbacks Saturday night.
