Packers hoping COVID-19 stops with Veldheer as playoff game approaches

January 14, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers placed offensive tackle Jared Veldheer on the reserve/COVID-19 list after he tested positive just two days after his arrival from Indianapolis.  Now the Packers are hoping the buck stops with Veldheer as they get ready for their NFC Divisional playoff opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

A good sign that the Packers may not be further affected by Veldheer’s positive test is the fact that standard contact tracing didn’t deem any other players as close contacts.

Now, as the Packers continue preparing for Saturday’s game against the Rams, they’re crossing their fingers that no additional positive tests surface in daily testing.

Veldheer was signed off the Colts practice squad at the very least, to provide depth at the tackle position during Green Bay’s playoff run.  He started Saturday’s game between the Colts and Bills at left tackle and helped the Packers during last year’s playoff run by playing in their divisional playoff win over Seattle.  Now, he’ll have to miss this week’s game.

Veldheer practiced with the Packers on Tuesday before his positive test was revealed on Wednesday morning.

Packers add Veldheer for second straight season

January 12, 2021 By Bill Scott

With David Bakhtiari out with a season ending ACL injury and Rick Wagner’s knee issues, the Green Bay Packers added some insurance for the playoffs by bringing back tackle Jared Veldheer for a second straight postseason.

The Packers signed Veldheer off of the Indianapolis practice squad, after he started at left tackle in last week’s Colt’s playoff game against the Buffalo Bills.

Prior to last week’s playoff game, Veldheer hadn’t played a game all season.  His last action came with the Packers in a playoff win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The Packers had Monday off and return to the practice field on Tuesday, as they get ready for Saturday’s NFC Divisional playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Packers hold off late charging Seahawks to advance to NFC Championship

January 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers played one of his best games of the season, helping the Green Bay Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks 28-23 in the NFC Divisional playoffs and securing a rematch with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game.

Rodgers and Davante Adams put the Packers on their backs, connecting eight times for 160 yards and two touchdowns.  The 160 receiving yards for Adams is a Green Bay Packers playoff-franchise record.

When the Packers needed a big play, Rodgers was there to deliver a series of pinpoint accurate passes, helping his team to a season best 9-of-14 on third downs (69%).  That is the best third down accuracy rate for the Packers since the 2016 season.

Rodgers sealed the victory with a pair of third-down passes, a 32-yard pass to Adams on a third-and-8 [Read more…]

Packers add veteran tackle to the mix

November 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Billy Turner

With Bryan Bulaga leaving last Sunday’s game against San Francisco with a sprained MCL, the Green Bay Packers have added a veteran offensive lineman to the mix.

The Packers Wednesday claimed retired veteran Jared Veldheer off waivers from the New England Patriots.  The 32-year old Veldheer never played for the Patriots after signing a 1-year, $3.5 million deal during the offseason.  He instead, retired during the Patriots offseason program.

Healthy again, the Patriots released him from the reserve/retired list this week and the Packers were awarded Veldheer on a waiver claim.

Bulaga is expected to miss at least a week and maybe more, but his injury isn’t expected to be season ending.  Alex Light took over during Sunday night’s loss to the 49ers but struggled.

It’s possible that Billy Turner will move from right guard to right tackle and have the Packers insert Lucas Patrick into the lineup at right guard.  But coach Matt LaFleur said they’ll take the week to make a decision as to what way they want to go.

Veldheer has played in 118 career games, including 113 starts.  He has spent time with the Raiders, Cardinals and Broncos.  Veldheer was originally a third-round pick by the Raiders in 2010.  The Packers selected Bulaga with the 23rd pick in the first round of that draft.
