Packers getting healthy as they prepare for the Bears

September 25, 2014 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews works out on Wednesday.

Clay Matthews works out on Wednesday.

All 52 players on the Green Bay Packers roster practiced on Wednesday as they get ready for Sunday’s NFC North showdown at Chicago against the Bears.

Linebackers Brad Jones (quadriceps), Clay Matthews (groin) and Nick Perry (wrist) all practiced on a limited basis.  Cornerback Davon House (knee), wide receiver Jarrett Boykin (knee) and right tackle Bryan Bulaga (knee) were all full participants.

Matthews wasn’t able to finish Sunday’s 19-7 loss at Detroit last Sunday.  Today will be a big day for Matthews as the Packers will work in full pads.

Bears injury update

The health of Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall remains up in the air.  Chicago didn’t practice on Wednesday, but the wide receiver was still designated as “did not participate”.

Marshall reaggravated the injury at New York last Monday night.

Packers offense struggles in 19-7 loss to the Lions (Audio)

The Green Bay Packers offensive unit couldn’t find itself on Sunday and the result was a 19-7 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Eddie Lacy managed just 36 yards rushing and the entire Packers’ backfield combined for just 76 yards on 22 carries, on a day when the Lions were playing two safeties deep and rolling coverage towards Jordy Nelson.  The Lions asked their front four to stop the run and that they did.

After finishing 7th in the NFL in rushing a year ago, the Packers ground attack has gone nowhere.  Eddie Lacy, who is the defending offensive rookie of the year, is averaging just 3.1 yards a carry.

Lacy also fumbled on the Packers opening possession when Nick Fairley forced the fumble.  Lions safety Don Carey scooped up the ball and raced 40 yards for a touchdown. [Read more…]

James Jones to the Raiders.  It was time to re-stock the cupboard.

The Packers selected wide receiver Davante Adams out of Fresno State with the 53rd overall pick (round 2) in the draft.  After a red shirt season in 2011, Adams played just two seasons at Fresno State and put up some staggering numbers.

Adams started all 26 games and caught 233 career passes for 3,030 yards and 38 touchdowns.  In two seasons, Adams averaged 116.54 yards a game.  Last season as a sophomore, Adams caught 131 passes for 1,718 yards and 24 touchdowns.  He averaged 13.11 yards per catch and 132.22 yards a game.

Adams is the only player in Fresno State history to record multiple 100-reception, 1,000-yard, double digit-touchdown performances.  His 233 career receptions ranked 4th in Mountain West Conference history. [Read more…]

Another example of what’s wrong in the NFL

February 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

The agent for free agent wide receiver James Jones told the

James Jones

James Jones

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he doesn’t think Ted Thompson wants his client back with the Green Bay Packers once the free agent signing period begins on March 11.

It’s one of the things wrong with pro football today.

There’s not a player in the Green Bay locker room that played harder and the team always came first.  Jones didn’t complain about opportunities and didn’t fall back on excuses when things weren’t going well.  While he missed two games with a knee injury last season, he played the last two with two broken ribs.

Back in the day, a player like Jones would have likely spent his entire career with the Packers.  But with Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb in front of him on the receiver depth chart and talent young receivers like Jarrett Boykin ready to burst onto the scene, there just isn’t room for a free agent receiver looking to be rewarded for his play, not to mention his great attitude and toughness. Field, grinding their way to a 31-13 win over the Cleveland Browns on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

The Packers were already playing without six difference starters due to injury.  Then they lost tight end Jermichael Finley in the 4th quarter.  But the Packers still figured out a way to get it done.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns.  Eddie Lacy ran for 82 yards and a score and wide receiver Jarrett Boykin caught 8 passes for 103 yards and his first NFL touchdown. [Read more…]

Packers return to work today (AUDIO)

January 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

During the regular season, Tuesday is usually an off day for the Green Bay Packers.  However, with the Packers hosting the Minnesota Vikings Saturday night in Wild Card weekend of the NFL Playoffs, Green Bay is back on the practice field today instead of the customary Wednesday start to the work week.

It will be the third meeting between the teams in the last six weeks.  Green Bay knocked off the Vikings 23-14 back on December the 2nd while the Vikings earned a 37-34 win this past Sunday at the Metro Dome.  The third meeting of the season will come just six days after the last time the teams laced it up.

Boykin ready for opportunity this Sunday

October 27, 2012 By admin

Albert Einstein once said, “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”  With Greg Jennings out, Jordy Nelson questionable, and Donald Driver probable, Green Bay Packers wideout Jarrett Boykin looks to have found his opportunity and feels prepared for it.

Boykin, an undrafted rookie from Virginia Tech, led the Packers in receptions this preseason and was signed to the roster, but has not seen action yet.

Boykin was originally signed by Jacksonville, but waived three days later.

When asked if this game meant a little more because of the history, Boykin said it adds a little more, but it is not his main focus.

Boykin, the all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards at Virginia Tech, said he did not have a preference where he lined up as a wide receiver.

Jennings opts for surgery

October 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

After a month of dealing with a nagging groin injury, Green Bay Packers wide

Greg Jennings

receiver Greg Jennings sought a second opinion.

During a consultation with specialist Dr. William Meyers (Philadelphia) on Wednesday, the Packers’ 7th year receiver was diagosed with a rectus abdominal tear and is opting for surgery.

AUDIO: Greg Jennings on going with surgery vs. injection treatment :14

Jennings initially suffered the injury near the end of the season opener against San Francisco at Lambeau Field.  Jennings has twice tried comebacks since, to no avail.

Nelson

The Packers may have to play Sunday’s game against Jacksonville without wide receiver Jordy Nelson.  He suffered a hamstring pull in practice on Wednesday and hasn’t practiced since.  Mike McCarthy said for now, they’ll try to test Nelson Saturday or Sunday.

If Nelson can’t play on Sunday, Randall Cobb and James Jones would go into the game as the top two receivers.  It would mean increased playing time for veteran Donald Driver, who is playing in his 200th career game, as well as rookie Jarrett Boykin.

B.J. Raji

Nose tackle B.J. Raji practiced in pads on Thursday and coach Mike McCarthy thought he looked good.  Raji missed the last two games with an ankle injury.

Packers aim for quick start to new season with new faces

September 4, 2012 By admin

Jarrett Boykin practices

The start of September brings around many new events including the road to fall, the start of school, and most importantly, the start of a new Green Bay Packers season.

The final 53-man roster is set and to the surprise of some, there are six wide receivers.  Five of the six are household names for Packer fans, but one name sounds foreign to some.  Jennings, Driver, Nelson, Cobb, and Jones make up the household names while Jarrett Boykin is the extra.

Originally undrafted, Boykin was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars May 4th, but was waived three days later.  After trying out for the Packers, he signed May 14th.  The rookie wide receiver set receiving records during his time at Virginia Tech.

The depth and quality in the Packer’s wide receiver position is contested by few in the NFL, and Boykin made an impact in the preseason to rightfully earn a spot.  He led the Packers with 13 catches, 166 yards receiving, and one touchdown.

His huge hands plus great natural instinct, gives Jarrett a chance to shine and make a name for himself. Jordy Nelson has nothing but good things to say about the rookie, praising his work ethic.

Nelson, Boykin, and the other Packers wish to re-create the quick start they got against former Super Bowl champions, the New Orleans Saints.  Last year, the Packers opened their season defeating the Saints 42-34, which saw the Packers score 21 points in the first quarter and Rodgers throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Packers receivers finish strong

August 31, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers have until 8pm tonight to reduce their roster from 75

Jarrett Boykin

to 53 players.  The backup receivers certainly made a case for the Packers to keep 6 receivers instead of the normal 5.

Jarrett Boykin had 5 catches for 82 yards and a touchdown last night.  His preseason total is 13 catches for 166 yards.  Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel both had a pair of catches last night.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said a number of statements were made in this contest.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy says a number of players made statements :22

Mike McCarthy said after the game that he doesn’t have a high level of concern about B.J. Raji’s injured ankle.  Raji hurt his ankle on the first play of the game.
