Spieth predicting low scores at the U.S. Open

2015 U.S. Open Champion Jordan Spieth is predicting the winner of the 2017 Open at Erin Hills will go lower than most at a U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroy won in 2011 by finishing 16-under par, but that isn’t par for the course at a normally difficult U.S. Open.  In fact, if you take McIlroy’s score out if the equation, the average winning score since 2006 has been 1.1 strokes under par.

Spieth told reporters on Tuesday that someone who has good control of the ball off the tee will have plenty of opportunities to make birdies, given the conditions that are expected.

Those conditions are for off and on rain throughout the tournament, which will leave the green’s soft and receptive to the type of target shooting that the pro’s love.

It was just weeks ago that Jason Day collapsed at the U.S. Open because of Vertigo.  He had the 54-hole lead for the second straight Major and for the second straight time, couldn’t hold it together.

Sunday at Whistling Straits, Day would enter the final round of the 97th PGA Championship with the 54-hole lead.   This time he would hang on and pull away, holding off Jordan Spieth to pull out a 3-shot win.  He shot a 5-under par 67 and broke the 72-hole major championship scoring record with a 20-under-par 268.  He can no longer be labeled the best golfer without a major.

Day made seven birdies and just two bogeys and was dominant with his driver all day.  On the par-5 eleventh hole, Spieth’s drive went 302 yards.  When he walked up to his ball, he could see that Day’s drive was another 80 yards up ahead.

“We’ve played a lot of major championship rounds together and that was the best I’ve ever seen him play,” said Spieth. [Read more…]

World #1 Rory McIlroy fired a 4-under par 67 and takes a one shot lead to the third round of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

The 25-year-old McIlroy is trying to win his third straight tournament.  He takes a one-stroke lead over Australian Jason Day and Jim Furyk into the third round and is two shots in front of Rickie Fowler, Ryan Palmer and Mikko Ilonen of Finland.

McIlroy said his goal for the weekend is to try to put as much distance between him and his pursuers as he possibly could.

It’s a crowded field though.  Fifteen players are within four shots of the lead, including 2005 PGA champion Phil Mickelson, who climbed into a tie for seventh with a 67.  Madison’s Steve Stricker shot a 3-under par 68 who stands with Mickelson at 5-under.

Day shot the low round of the day (65).  He’s looking for his first major victory.  Day’s tied for fourth at the U.S. Open in June. [Read more…]

Stricker loses momentum and shot at his 1st major (Masters Recap)

April 15, 2013 By Bill Scott

Adam Scott became the first Australian to win the Masters, beating Angel Cabrera in a playoff on a rainy Sunday at Augusta.

Scott holed a 12-foot birdie putt to pull out the win.  Cabrera almost pulled out his third Major title, but his birdie try on the first extra hole just missed the cup.

Scott claimed his first Major victory, closing with a 3-under 69 for a 9-under total in becoming the first Australian to win the event.

Fellow Australian Jason Day had the lead until he bogeyed the 16th and 17th holes.  He had birdied 13, 14 and 15 to take the lead at 9-under par. [Read more…]
