Brewers add first baseman

January 7, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoAfter trading away first basemen Adam Lind to Seattle and Jason Rogers to Pittsburgh, the Milwaukee Brewers signed Chris Carter, who was not tendered a contract by the Houston Astros.

The 29-year-old signed a one-year deal for $2.5 million and can earn another $500,000 in incentives.

Carter hit 24 home runs and drove in 64 runs for the Astros last season, but hit just .199.  He also struck out 151 times.

Carter was traded from Oakland to Houston before the 2014 season and hit 29 home runs while driving in 82 runs in 148 games that year.  But he also led the American League in strikeouts with 212.  In 2014, he clubbed 37 homers with 88 RBI in 145 games but struck out 182 times.

The Brewers made room for Carter on the 40-man roster by designating catcher Josmil Pinto for assignment.  Pinto had been claimed off waivers from San Diego last month.

Hoffman falls short in Hall of Fame Voting

Former Brewers’ closer Trevor Hoffman finished fifth in the baseball writers’ voting for the Hall-of-Fame.  He received 67.3% of the 440 votes, 34 short of the required 330 needed for election.  It was the first year on the ballot for Hoffman, who played 18 seasons, most of them with San Diego.  He finished with 601 saves, ranking second all-time.

Brewers in need of a first baseman

December 18, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoAfter trading Adam Lind to Seattle a week ago, the Milwaukee Brewers sent their other first baseman, Jason Rogers to Pittsburgh on Thursday, getting a pair of minor-league prospects, outfielder Keon Broxton and right-hander Trey Supak.

Sending both first basemen elsewhere left the Brewers with a gaping hole at first base but General Manager David Stearns said the return from the Pirates was too enticing to turn down. [Read more…]

Jhonny Peralta and Stephen Piscotty combined for seven RBI to lead the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-3 come-from-behind win over the Milwaukee Brewers in their series opener in St. Louis on Thursday night.

The Cardinals trailed 3-0 in the fourth when Peralta clubbed a three-run home run to get the ball rolling for the Cardinals.  Piscotty followed with a home run of his own.

Taylor Jungmann took the loss for the Brewers, roughed up for the third time in five starts this month.  Jungmann allowed six runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts in five innings.

Jungmann (9-7) fell to 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA in five September starts.  He’s given up five or more earned runs three times and a total of seven home runs after allowing only three in his first 15 starts.

The Brewers scored three runs in the first off of St. Louis starter Michael Wacha (17-6).

Jason Rogers drove in the Brewers first run with an RBI single and Hernan Perez drove in the other two runs with a two-out double.

Game two of the four game series is tonight.

The Milwaukee Brewers were 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 at Miller Park.  The loss is the 7th straight for the Brewers, which drops them back into the Central Division basement.

Khris Davis and Jason Rogers hit solo home runs for the Brewers, who managed just seven hits against Cincinnati pitching.

Rookie Zach Davies gave up  Todd Frazier’s first-inning RBI single, but the Brewers tied the game on Davis’ 22nd home run of the season in the second inning.

Lefty Brandon Finnegan, acquired as part of the trade for Johnny Cueto earlier this season, was making his first major-league start.

Davies would run into problems again in the fourth, serving up a home run to Jay Bruce, his 31st of the season.  The Reds took a 3-1 lead.

Davies wound up allowing those three runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in six innings.  He fell to 1-2.

Taylor Jungmann pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight.

Jungmann wins his Major League debut

June 10, 2015 By Bill Scott

Brewer helmetsTaylor Jungmann not only held off the Pirates on Tuesday night and winning his Major League debut, the performance will lead to a second start on Sunday against the Washington Nationals at Miller Park.

Jungmann held the Pirates to a run on three hits in seven innings to pitch the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.

The 2011 first-round draft pick walked one and struck out five in his debut.  He retired 13 hitters in a row during one stretch.

The Brewers got home runs from Jason Rogers and Aramis Ramirez in the victory.

The Pirates only run came on Starling Marte’s home run off of Jungmann in the second.

Francisco Rodriguez worked the 9th inning for his 12th save in 12 tries this season.

The Brewers send Kyle Lohse (3-6, 6.59 ERA) to the mound in the series finale tonight.  He’ll face Charlie Morton (3-0, 2.84) of the Pirates.  The Brewers are in search of their first series sweep of the season.

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced their 2013 Robin Yount Performance Award winners, which go to the top player and pitcher in their minor league system.
