Packers make more roster moves on Tuesday

November 6, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made more roster moves on Tuesday, signing CB Will Redmond to the active roster from the practice squad.  They released safety Jermaine Whitehead and placed WR Geronimo Allison on injured reserve.

Redmond was signed to the Packers’ practice squad on Sept. 11.  He was originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round (No. 68 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State.  Redmond spent his entire rookie season on injured reserve with a knee injury and the first eight games of 2017 with an ankle injury.  He was released by the 49ers on Oct. 31, 2017, and signed by the Kansas City Chiefs to the practice squad on Nov. 9, 2017, where he spent the rest of the season.

The Packers also added LB Brady Sheldon to the practice squad to take Redmond’s place.

Whitehead played in 19 games with two starts for the Packers in 2016 and appeared to be high on Mike Pettine’s list.  But despite being used a large percentage of the time on defense over the last few games, his head slap of a Patriots player that led to his ejection may have been his downfall.

Allison underwent groin surgery this week and must now spent eight weeks on injured reserve.  He would be eligible to return the first week of the playoffs, if the Packers get there.  Allison suffered the injury in practice last Thursday.

Packers deal Montgomery & Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Twenty Four hours ago, Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery said he had a hard time trusting his teammates and he wasn’t sure what his role was on the team.  Fast forward one day and Montgomery was sent to the Baltimore Ravens for a 7th round draft pick in 2020.

Montgomery fumbled a kick return after being told not to bring the football out of the end zone.  Criticism quickly followed from Montgomery’s teammates and the Packers returner said its hard to trust anyone now.

Montgomery was selected in the third round out of Stanford in 2015.  In 36 career games, he caught 129 passes for 827 yards and three touchdowns.  He has rushed for 849 yards and seven touchdowns.

Montgomery will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.  His departure means the Packers no longer have a single player from that 2015 draft class on the active roster.  Linebacker Jake Ryan is the only member of that class still a part of the organization, but he’s on injured reserve. Ryan out for the season

August 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jake Ryan

Green Bay Packers linebacker Jake Ryan suffered a torn ACL in his right knee in practice on Monday and will miss the rest of the season.

Ryan, who is in the final year of his contract in Green Bay, also tore his right ACL when he was in college at the University of Michigan.  He will earn his base salary of $1.907 million for this season.

Ryan was set to start in the Packers base defense, now Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine will have to find an alternative.  Pettine has used a number of players during practice this week, including Quentin Rollins, Josh Jones and Jermaine Whitehead and rookie Oren Burks in the dime package.

On Tuesday, general manager Brian Gutekunst said he had no plans to replace Ryan with a veteran.  He wanted to see how Burks and the other young players do in Camp.  Ahmad Thomas, Greer Martini and Naashon Hughes have all shown flashes in the first week.

Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was asked on Wednesday how me might replace Ryan.  Pettine said, “Well, certainly we have experience in a guy that was very productive last year in Blake.  We have the rookie, O.B. (Burks), who has looked good at times.  Still, the transition from the college game to the NFL, it takes some time.

“It’s tough for those guys to come in, and it overwhelms them a little bit at first.  And especially now, we’re working off the entire inventory.  And once we get to game plan situations, we really cut it down.  That’s going to help a lot of our guys that have a lot of stuff running through their head.

“Ahmad Thomas has flashed, certainly, some coverage ability in the days so far.  And then we have some other, younger guys.  We’ll see how it plays out.  It’s a big loss.”

Packers added free agent safety

May 19, 2016 By Bill Scott

Packers logoThe Green Bay Packers have signed free agent safety Jermaine Whitehead to a deal, after Baltimore released him earlier this month.

The 23-year-old Mississippi native was on San Francisco’s practice squad when the Ravens added him to their 53 man roster last December.  Whitehead did not play in a game, but the Ravens resigned him in mid April before letting him go.

He played his college ball at Auburn and becomes the sixth safety on the Packers 90-man roster.

Barrington to be honored

Packers linebacker Sam Barrington has been chosen to receive Pop Warner Football’s Humanitarian Award, and he’ll be recognized at a banquet May 28th at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
