Brewers set to hire Murphy as bench coach

Milwaukee Brewers’ manager Craig Counsell will finally get his old college coach in the dugout.

The San Diego Union-Tribune says former Padres’ interim manager Pat Murphy will become the Brewers’ new bench coach.

Counsell wanted to bring in the 56-year-old Murphy last May, soon after Counsell replaced the fired Ron Roenicke.  Murphy was San Diego’s Triple-A manager at the time.  The Padres refused to let him go, and he became the club’s interim manager in mid-June after Bud Black was fired.

Murphy was removed at the end of the season after he led San Diego to a 42-54 record.

In Milwaukee, Murphy replaces Jerry Narron, one of five Brewers’ coaches terminated after the season.

Murphy coached Counsell at Notre Dame in the 1990’s, and the two have been good friends ever since.

Last week, the Brewers reportedly hired Derek Johnson from the Cubs’ organization as their new pitching coach.  The Brewers have not announced the new hires.  It’s possible they’ll announce all five newcomers at the same time.

The Milwaukee Brewers have announced that hitting coach Darnell Coles and third base coach Ed Sedar will return for the 2016 season.  The team didn’t renew the contracts of first base coach Mike Guerrero, pitching coach Rick Kranitz, bench coach Jerry Narron, outfield coach John Shelby and bullpen coach Lee Tunnell.  New General Manager David Stearns made the announcement today.

The 53-year-old Coles just completed his first season on the coaching staff after he was named to the position last October 23.  He is in his second stint in the Brewers organization, having served as minor league hitting coordinator (2010-11) and then manager at Double-A Huntsville (2012-13) during his first stint.  Coles also spent one season (2014) as assistant hitting coach with the Detroit Tigers.

The 54-year-old Sedar has been in the Brewers organization since 1992, including the first nine seasons (2007-15) on the Major League coaching staff.  Sedar is the longest-tenured coach on the staff.  He has served as first base coach (2007-10) and  third base coach (2011-15).
