Brewers celebrate again after capturing NLDS against the Rockies

October 8, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Brewers celebrate their sweep of the Rockies in the NLDS.

The Milwaukee Brewers ran their win streak to 11 games by knocking off the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Sunday, sweeping the best-of-five National League Divisional Series.

Wade Miley and five relievers blanked the Rockies while Jesus Aguilar, Orlando Arcia and Keon Broxton all homered to power the Brewers 12-hit attack.

The Brewers advanced to the NLCS for the first time since 2011.  It starts on Friday at Miller Park against the winner of the other NLDS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves.

Brewer pitchers held the Rockies to just two runs in the three games.

After taking a 2-0 lead early, the Brewers scored twice in the sixth on a balk and a wild pitch to jump out in front 4-0.

Orlando Arcia started the 9th with a home run to left off of Rockies closer Wade Davis.  Keon Broxton followed with a home run to right.

Josh Hader got the final two outs to close it out for the Brewers.

Brewer bats go silent in loss to Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped to 5-11 against the Pittsburgh Pirates this season, falling 3-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.

The Brewers missed a chance to gain ground in the NL Central Division race after the Chicago Cubs fell 2-1 to the Cincinnati Reds.  Chicago’s lead remains 2 1/2 games on the Brewers in the Central.

Pittsburgh’s Trevor Williams held the Brewers to just two hits over six innings while striking out seven.  In two starts against the Brewers this season, Williams has shut them out for 13 innings, allowing just three base hits and striking out 14.

The Brewers didn’t score until the ninth inning when Jesus Aguilar and Domingo Santana hit back to back solo home runs to climb to within a single run before the late rally fell short.

Jhoulys Chacin (14-8) took the loss for the Brewers, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs on three hits while striking out 4 and walking 3.

The Brewers will have to face the Pirates one more time, set to travel to Pittsburgh for a weekend series against the Pirates.  They’ll open a 3-game series with the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park tonight.

Quintana continues his dominance of Milwaukee

September 12, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jose Quintana’s dominance of the Milwaukee Brewers continued on Tuesday night when he blanked the Brewers for six-plus innings on three hits in a 3-0 Cubs victory.

In nine attempts since Quintana came to the Cubs in the middle of last season, the Brewers have managed to win just once, a 7-0 win back on Aug. 14 at Wrigley Field.  Take that game away and Quintana is 7-0 with a 0.81 earned run average in the other eight outings.

What’s puzzling for the Brewers is that Quintana has a 4.54 ERA for the season.  He earned his 13th win overall.

Victor Caratini had a RBI single in the second and a run scoring double in the 7th as the Cubs extended their lead over the Brewers to two games in the National League Central. [Read more…]

19 hits isn’t enough for Brewers

August 13, 2018 By Bill Scott

Manager Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers collected 19 hits on Sunday, yet still fell to the Atlanta Braves 8-7.

Brewers starter Chase Anderson struggled from the start and made it through just four innings before manager Craig Counsell was forced to go to the bullpen.  It’s the second straight outing that Anderson has been unable to make it to the fifth inning and protect a lead.

Corey Knebel, who is no longer working in a closer capacity was entrusted with the fifth inning and he proved he wasn’t able to handle that spot either.  He allowed a run after a pair of one-out doubles by Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis.

Rookie Corbin Burnes coughed up a two-run homer in the sixth and Atlanta’s Ozzie Albies finished off the Braves comeback with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh off of Dan Jennings.

The 19 hits were offset by the Brewers going 4 for 14 with runners in scoring position and leaving 13 runners on base.  They fell to 17-30 in day games and are now 4-15 on Sunday’s. [Read more…]

Brewers use long ball to beat Padres

August 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers exploded for five runs in the first inning and this time never looked back, knocking off the San Diego Padres 8-4 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Jesus Aguilar, Travis Shaw and Eric Thames clubbed back-to-back-to-back home runs in that second inning.  Orlando Arcia and Christian Yelich also homered for the Brewers.

The Brewers poured it on Padres rookie Brett Kennedy, who made his Major League debut after going 10-0 at Class AAA El Paso.  At one point in the first inning, the Brewers collected seven straight hits off of Kennedy.

Jhoulys Chacin went six innings for the win, improving to 11-4.

The Brewers and Padres play the rubber game of the series this afternoon.  Junior Guerra faces Robbie Erlin in the pitching matchup.

The Brewers start the day a game and a half behind the Cubs, who lost in Kansas City last night.

Brewers blow lead and fall to Padres

August 8, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Chase Anderson couldn’t get out of the fifth inning and the Brewers fell to the San Diego Padres 11-5 on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

The Padres scored at least one run in each of the final seven innings and all four Brewers relievers gave up at least one run.  Josh Hader took the loss, his first since September of last season.

Chase Anderson retired the first six batters, then walked Franmil Reyes to start the third as the downward trend began.  Anderson struggled to get control of his curve ball and left too many pitches out over the plate.

Jesus Aguilar and Mike Moustakas each clubbed two-run homers to stake the Brewers to the early lead.

It’s the second straight loss for the Brewers, who fell 2 1/2 games behind the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs, who blanked Kansas City.

Jhoulys Chacin gets the nod in game two of the series for the Brewers on Wednesday night.

Brewers throttled by Dodgers in series finale

August 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finished their eight game road trip out west with a 5-3 record and they’ll take it.  But they finished with two straight losses, including Thursday nights 21-5 blowout loss to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers had 18 hits and clubbed seven home runs.  Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin (10-4) gave up three of the long balls, allowing eight earned runs and not making it out of the fifth.

The 21 runs scored by the Dodgers is the most ever scored against a Brewers team.  With the hits and runs piling up, manager Craig Counsell once again went to a couple of position players to mop up, Hernan Perez and Erik Kratz.

The Brewers did score first after Christian Yelich doubled and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches from Clayton Kershaw. [Read more…]

Thames leads Brewers past Dodgers

July 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames clubbed a three-run homer in the third inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.

Travis Shaw and Jesus Aguilar also drove in runs for the Brewers, who improved to 4-1 on their 8-game West Coast road trip.  Josh Hader pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn his fourth victory.

Manny Machado’s first home game with the Dodgers was spoiled by the Brewers victory.  Machado did hit a solo homer in his Dodger Stadium debut.

Kenta Maeda didn’t make it out of the fifth inning to get tagged with the loss.

Rookie Freddy Peralta started for the Brewers but pitched out of trouble and allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work.  His pitch count reached 98 pitches in four innings and he was removed in favor of Hader.  Peralta allowed one run and three hits while walking four and striking out six.

The win allowed the Brewers to pull within a single game of the idle Chicago Cubs in the Central Division.  The Dodgers are up just 1/2 game over the Diamondbacks for the top spot in the NL West.

The Brewers will send Wade Miley to the mound in game two of the series tonight.  Miley is 3-0 in six career starts lifetime at Dodger Stadium with a 2.41 ERA.

A.L. Wins All Star Game 8-6; Hader Hit Hard

The American League defeated the National League 8-6 in Tuesday nights All Star game in Washington DC.

The Brewers had five representatives.  Christian Yelich went 1 for 3 with a homerun.  Jesus Aguilar and Lorenzo Cain went 0-2 and Jeremy Jeffress pitched a scoreless inning.  Josh Hader allowed a 3-run homerun to former Brewer Jean Segura in the eighth inning that gave the A.L. a 5-2 lead.

After the game, Hader spoke to reporters regarding racist and homophobic tweets sent out on his account when he was 17 years old (seven years ago).  Hader apologized, saying ‘No excuses. I was dumb and stupid.”

Former Brewer Scooter Gennett tied the game with one out in the ninth inning with a 2-run homerun

The Brewers resume play on Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.  Milwaukee has lost six in a row and trail the Chicago Cubs in the N.L. Central by 2 1/2 games.

Royals earn split in their 2-game series with the Brewers

June 28, 2018 By Bill Scott

Brent Suter – File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Kansas City Royals entered their two-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers as the lowest scoring team in the majors, but they exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to pull out a 5-4 win at Miller Park.

Mike Moustakas got the ball rolling with a solo home run off of Brewers starter Brent Suter to tie the game 1-1.

After three straight Royals reached base, Craig Counsell went to his bullpen.  Jeremy Jeffress got the first out, then went to left Josh Hader, who couldn’t seal the deal.

Adalberto Mondesi’s 2-run single off of Hader gave the Royals a 3-1 lead.  Lucas Duda followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-1.  Whit Merrifield’s run scoring single made it 5-1 Kansas City.

Hader allowed more than one hit in an inning for the first time in 27 appearances this season. [Read more…]
