Packers mail it in, crushed by Lions 31-0

December 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

DeShone Kizer

With nothing left to play for, the Green Bay Packers capped off the 2018 season with a 31-0 loss to the Detroit Lions in the season finale at Lambeau Field.

The Packers lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a concussion early in the second quarter and any hopes of pulling off a comeback came to a quick end.

Concerning though is the fact that the Lions entered the game with just as many injuries as the Packers and just five wins.  Yet they didn’t lay down, sweeping the season series with the Packers for the second straight year.

The Lions totaled 402 yards of offense, while the Packers were able to muster just 175.  The Lions converted 7 of 13 third downs against the Packers defense and scored a touchdown on a fake field goal, adding to the Packers season-long issues on special teams. [Read more…]

Report: Packers interview two former Colts head coaches

December 26, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers close out their season on Sunday against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field and they’re busy interviewing potential head coaching prospects.

Pro Football Talk was first to report that the Packers interviewed with former Colts and Lions head coach Jim Caldwell.  Caldwell spent three years (2009-2011) with the Indianapolis Colts (26-22 record) and then four years (2014-2017) with Detroit (36-28 record).

Caldwell guided the Lions into the NFC playoffs in two of the last three years, but he was fired after failing to make the playoffs last year.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported that the Packers also interviewed former Colts head coach Chuck Pagano.  In six seasons in Indianapolis, Pagano went 53-43 during the regular season and 3-3 in the postseason.

Pagano worked with Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine in Baltimore, and he hired Packers interim coach Joe Philbin in Indianapolis.

The Packers have already said that current interim head coach Joe Philbin will be a candidate for the vacancy.  The Packers are expected to talk with several more candidates before deciding on a new head coach.

Packers end three-game slide

December 9, 2018 By Bill Scott

Joe Philbin

The Green Bay Packers’ three-game losing streak is history.  Aaron Rodgers threw a pair of touchdown passes as the Packers build a 34-7 lead and held on for a 34-20 victory on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Jones also added 78 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Packers, while Bashaud Breeland returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown.  The Packers improved to 5-7-1 with the victory, giving coach Joe Philbin his first victory as interim head coach.

Matt Ryan passed for three touchdowns for Atlanta, but two of them came in the fourth quarter with the game out of reach.

Julio Jones finished with eight receptions for 106 yards and two scores for the Falcons, who have now dropped five-straight games.

The Packers improved to 5-1-1 at home this season and will travel to Chicago on Sunday to face the Bears.

Rodgers breaks passing record

Aaron Rodgers has now thrown more consecutive passes without an interception than any quarterback in NFL history.  Rodgers finished 21-of-32, breaking Tom Brady’s record of 358 passes without a pick from 2010 to 2011.

Philbin isn’t concerned with Packers job candidacy

December 4, 2018 By Bill Scott

Joe Philbin

Joe Philbin was emotional during his press conference Monday, discussing his role as Interim Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers,  He choked up when discussing the dismissal of his long-time friend, Mike McCarthy.

A short time earlier, team President and CEO Mark Murphy said he would keep an eye on Philbin over the final four weeks of the season and considered the 57-year-old to be a candidate for the team’s head coaching vacancy.

When asked about the possibility of this being an audition for the permanent head coach, Philbin dismissed the notion.

“My ambition in 2018 right now is to help this team play its best football of the year.  Period,” Philbin said.  “And the future’s the future.  We’ll deal with that as it comes.” [Read more…]

Packers make coaching change, fire McCarthy

December 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy fired as head coach of the Packers.

Following Sunday’s 20-17 Packers loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lambeau Field, Green Bay President and Chief Executive Officer Mark Murphy announced the immediate firing of head coach Mike McCarthy.  He named offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as the teams interim head coach.

In a statement from the Packers, Murphy said, “The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers.  As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately.  Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field.  We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities.  We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”

McCarthy is the first Packers coach to be fired in-season since Gene Ronzani departed with two games left in the 1953 season.

McCarthy led the Packers to a Super Bowl title in 2010.  He departs with a 125-77-2 record in Green Bay, the second-best win total in franchise history behind Curly Lambeau (209-104-21).  Under McCarthy, the Packers also won six NFC North division titles and advanced to four NFC championship games.

Mark Murphy is scheduled to meet with reporters at 1:45 p.m. on Monday.

Wolf is headed for Cleveland

January 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Eliot Wolf

When the Green Bay Packers hired Brian Gutekunst as their next general manager, they passed on Eliot Wolf.  Now Wolf is taking his expertise with him to Cleveland, joining John Dorsey and the Cleveland Browns.

Wolf was a 14-year veteran of the Packers scouting team.  He had an offer to remain with the Packers and could have joined Reggie McKenzie and Jon Gruden in Oakland as well.  But in the end, after meeting with the Browns on Tuesday, he decided that would be the best place for him.

Wolf served as the Packers director of football operations from 2016 to 2017.  He most likely would have been named as an assistant GM in Green Bay, working alongside Gutekunst.  But Wolf being passed over for the position that his father Ron Wolf once held, likely played a factor in his decision to move.

It’s not a matter of whether or not Wolf becomes a GM in the NFL some day.  It’s more a matter of when.  Wolf was qualified for the Packers opening and will continue to get other opportunities moving forward. [Read more…]

Packers set to hire new defensive coordinator

January 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy

The Green Bay Packers are reportedly set to hire Mike Pettine as their new defensive coordinator.

The 51-year old Pettine was a defensive coordinator with the New York Jets (2009-12) and Buffalo Bills (2013) before taking over as the head coach of the Cleveland Browns prior to the 2014 season.  Pettine went 7-9 in his first season with the Browns but was fired after going 3-13 in 2015.  He spent last season as a defensive consultant with the Seattle Seahawks.

Pettine’s New York Jets defenses ranked first, third, fifth and eighth.  His defense in Buffalo in 2013 ranked 10th.

Pettine runs a 3-4 scheme that involves press man coverage with a series of blitzes.

Mike McCarthy fired Dom Capers after the Packers finished 7-9 and ranked 22nd in total defense.  Capers didn’t have a top ten defense in Green Bay since the Packers’ Super Bowl season in 2010, when it ranked fifth.

Offensive Coordinator Edgar Bennett will not return to the team.  Joe Philbin, who previously spent nine years with the Packers, including five as offensive coordinator, returns.  Philbin left in 2012 for the head coaching job in Miami.

McAdoo could land Giants head coaching job today

January 14, 2016 By Bill Scott

Ben McAdoo

Ben McAdoo

Two years ago, Ben McAdoo was the quarterbacks coach of the Green Bay Packers.  Today, McAdoo could become the next head coach of the New York Giants.

The 38-year-old McAdoo spent the last two seasons as the Giants’ offensive coordinator and was credited for helping quarterback Eli Manning get back on track.

McAdoo would replace Tom Coughlin, who resigned after 12 years as New York’s head coach.

McAdoo was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach in 2012 and 2013 and their tight ends coach for six years before that.

Former Packers offensive coordinator and ex-Miami head coach Joe Philbin would be among the favorites to run McAdoo’s offense in New York.

his (Miami) locker room and why something wasn’t done about it.  At the 2014 Scouting Combine today in Indianapolis, Philbin took to the podium and accepted responsibility for what went on in the locker room.

Philbin said, “I’m the one who’s in charge of the workplace.  We’re going to do things about this.  We’re going to make it better.  We’re going to look at every avenue and uncover every stone.  And we’re going to have a better workplace, I promise you that.”

Philbin said little when asked to provide any news on the future of Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin.  He did say that owner Stephen Ross would meet with Martin sometime soon. [Read more…]
