The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team will open the 2014-15 season ranked No. 10 in the USCHO.com Preseason Poll and No. 12 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Preseason Poll.

The Badgers finished the 2013-14 season ranked No. 7 in the nation in both polls.  This years rankings mark the 11th consecutive time the Badgers open a season ranked in the USCHO.com Preseason Poll, including the fifth time during that stretch ranked in the top 10.

Wisconsin is one of three Big Ten teams ranked among the top-10 schools in the USCHO.com Poll with No. 1 Minnesota and No. 8 Michigan also highly thought of as the season approaches.

Wisconsin holds its first official practice of the season on Saturday in De Pere at Cornerstone Community Center.  The 1 p.m. practice concludes with the Badgers’ Red-White scrimmage.

Wisconsin welcomes 11 freshmen to the team and will have 13 of their 26 players on the roster who have yet to play in a collegiate game for UW.  They do return senior Hobey Baker Memorial Award finalist Joel Rumpel in goal, along with double-digit goal scorer in senior forward Joseph LaBate.  Both were on the Big Ten preseason Players to Watch list.

tournament tonight.  The 4th ranked Badgers are the number-1 seed in the Midwest Regional and will face 13th ranked North Dakota in the semifinals in Cincinnati.

The other regional semifinal features Ferris State (28-10-3) against Colgate (20-13-5).  The winners will square off on Saturday for a lot in the Frozen Four, April 10-12 in Philadelphia.

The Badgers enter tonight’s game winning 8 of their last 9 games.

For Mike Eaves, this is his fifth NCAA Tournament as head coach of the Badgers.  The Badgers won the Frozen Four title in 2006 (Milwaukee) and captured a runner-up finish in 2010.

Wisconsin is hoping to get off to a good start.  The Badgers have posted a 18-4-1 record when scoring first.  They’re also 12-4 in games decided by one goal.

The Badgers are led in-goal by Hobey Baker Award candidate Joel Rumpel.  Rumpel is 21-5-1 on the season, earning 19 wins since December 1.  He ranks second in the nation with a .796 winning percentage.

Badger Men’s Hockey Goaltender Finalist for Richter Award

On Wednesday evening the Herb Brooks Foundation and Let’s Play Hockey announced the five finalists for the Mike Richter Award. The inaugural award will go the nation’s most outstanding goaltender.

Of the five finalists Badger men’s hockey junior goaltender Joel Rumpel was nominated by his peers.

During his junior season Rumpel ranked 4th in the nation with a 19-5-1 record and a .931 save percentage. His 2.00 goals-against average was strong enough for 6th in the country. Rumpel earned the Hockey Commissioners’ Association Honorable Mention National Player of the Month in February and twice earned, Big Ten First Star of the Week. Earlier this week Rumpel was named to the 2014 second-team All Big Ten.

Candidates for the award were nominated by all 59 NCAA Division 1 men’s hockey head coaches.  The winner will be selected by a committee of coaches, members of the media and scouts.

The Badgers (16-8-2, 7-4-1-0 Big Ten) knocked off the Minnesota Gophers  (19-4-5, 8-2-2-0 Big Ten) 2-1 on Friday night, matching Thursday’s 2-1 victory.

Joel Rumpel was spectacular for the second night in-a-row, stopping 28 of 29 Minnesota shots to record the win.  The Gophers 2-goals in the series is a season low.

Nic Kerdiles, in his first series back on the ice since suffering an injury on Jan. 4, put the Badgers ahead for good with 15:27 left in the game.  The sophomore took a feed from Grant Besse inside the blue line and beat Minnesota goalie Adam Wilcox from straight-on to put the Badgers up for good. win the WCHA’s Final Five Championship, the Broadmoor Trophy and more importantly, the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Badgers (22-12-7) got goals from Tyler Barnes, Sean Little and freshman Nic Kerdiles to finish 21-5-5 in the last 31 games.  Joel Rumpel finished with 19 saves as the Badgers out-shot Colorado College 33-21.

Kerdiles was named the most valuable player of the Final Five, recording a goal and an assist in the win over the Tigers.  Joining Kerdiles on the all-tournament team were Tyler Barnes, John Ramage and Joel Rumpel.

The pairings for next week’s NCAA Quarterfinals will be announced on Sunday.

quarterfinals of the WCHA Final Five at the Xcel Energy Center on Thursday afternoon.  Eleven Badgers recorded points and Joel Rumpel tallied 38 saves as UW earned its 20th win of the season.

Tyler Barnes and Jefferson Dahl recorded two goals apiece with both of Dahl’s tallies coming while the Badgers were short-handed.  They helped the Badgers secure a spot in Friday’s WCHA Final Five semifinal against top seeded St. Cloud State (23-14-1).

The Badgers scored three goals in just over eight minutes and led 4-0 before the Mavericks even scored a goal.  The Badgers have now scored 29 goals over the last seven games and improved to 15-1-1 when scoring at least three goals in a game, including 13-straight wins.

Minnesota State tallied both of their goals while defenseman John Ramage was serving a 5-minute major penalty for charging.

Wisconsin continues its quest for the Broadmoor Trophy against St. Cloud State at 2pm CT on Friday.

NCAA post season playoffs for an at-large berth.  They made a strong case for themselves on Sunday, beating the Minnesota Gophers 3-2 in the Hockey City Classic at Soldier Field.

Sean Little, Kevin Schulz and John Ramage all scored goals for the Badgers (13-10-7,
10-7-7 WCHA).

Wisconsin is 3-0-0 in outdoor games now, having also won at Camp Randall Stadium and at Lambeau Field previously. [Read more…]

Rumpel named WCHA’s Defensive player of the week

and recorded a shutout while leading the Badger men’s hockey team to a 2-0 win and a 2-2 tie (OT) against Minnesota-Duluth. 

Rumpel blanked UMD on Friday with a 29-save effort for his fourth career shutout and second in five games dating to last season.  He also held the Bulldogs scoreless on two power plays, including a five-minute major late in the third.

On Saturday, Rumpel returned to the nets and recorded 35 saves in the overtime tie, with double-digit save totals in three periods.  The Badgers trailed 2-0 in the third, but Rumpel kept his team in the game, despite a 26-10 UMD shot advantage.  He also stopped UMD on all five power-play chances. 

Rumpel has now allowed two goals or less in nine of his last 10 games dating back to last season.  He is 1-1-1 this season with a 1.30 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage.

Hockey Badgers open final WCHA season with a victory

campaign last night with a 2-0 win over Minnesota-Duluth at Amsoil Arena in Duluth last night.

Wisconsin junior center Mark Zengerle assisted on a goal by junior right-winger Tyler Barnes in the first period, then scored on a power play in the second for the only two goals of the game. 

Sophomore goaltender Joel Rumpel kept the Bulldogs from scoring in a 29-save effort.  Rumpel recorded his 4th career shutout for Mike Eaves Badgers, who improved to 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the WCHA.

The final game of the 2-game series is tonight in Duluth.

Hockey Badgers open regular season tonight

The 15th ranked Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team opens up the regular

season with a pair of non-conference games against the Northern Michigan Wildcats tonight at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Badgers beat the U.S. Under-18 Team 5-0 in an exhibition last week in Madison. 

UW returns 15 of its top 16 scorers from last season, and more than 83 percent of its scoring as it heads into the 2012-13 season.  Among the returnees is junior forward Mark Zengerle who led UW in points (50) and assists (37) and was third in goals (13).  He is the top returning scorer in college hockey.
