The Wisconsin Badgers put their 59-0 Big Ten title game loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes behind them.  They knocked off the Auburn Tigers 34-31 in overtime in the Outback Bowl.

The Badgers captured their first bowl game victory since 2009 and Barry Alvarez returned to the sidelines to earn his 9th (9-4) bowl victory.

Melvin Gordon ran for an Outback Bowl-record 251 yards and three touchdowns and freshman kicker Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to give the 18th-ranked Badgers the victory.

Gordon ran for touchdowns of 25, 53 and 6 yards and finished with 2,587 rushing yards on the season, 41 shy of Barry Sanders’ single-season FBS rushing record.  Gordon was named the Outback Bowl MVP.

Joel Stave gave the Badgers the early 7-0 lead, tossing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Corey Clement. [Read more…]

Badgers play for 3rd Big Ten title in last four years

December 6, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Big Ten's top prize

The Big Ten’s top prize

The 11th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers won the first two Big Ten Conference title games in 2011 over Michigan Sate and 2012 over Nebraska.  The Badgers missed out in 2013 and look to bounce back and win the big game again this season.

The Badgers (10-2) face the sixth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (11-1) in the championship game tonight at Lucan Oil Stadium.

Ohio State has won 10 straight games since suffering a 14-point loss to Virginia Tech on Sept. 6.  That loss came the week after the Buckeyes lost their starting quarterback Braxton Miller and replaced him with Big Ten Freshman of the Year J.T. Barrett.

Barrett figured it out quickly after that defeat and went on to throw for over 28-hundred yards, rushing for nearly 1-thousand yards and accounting for a Big Ten single season record 45 touchdowns before suffering a broken ankle last week.

So the Buckeyes depth is challenged again, this time with 6’5 sophomore Cardelle Jones, who takes over for Barrett. [Read more…]

After falling behind 17-3, the Wisconsin Badgers rebounded for a 34-24 win over the rival Minnesota Gophers to clinch a spot in the Big Ten title game and retain Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the 11th straight season.

The 14th ranked Badgers (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten) captured the Big Ten’s West Division title and will face No. 6 Ohio State (11-1, 8-0) on Saturday in Indianapolis.  The Badgers last won Big Ten titles in 2011 and 2012.

The Buckeyes closed out the regular season with a 42-28 win over rival Michigan earlier in the day in Columbus, but in the process, the Buckeyes lost their starting quarterback J.T. Barrett for the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

Melvin Gordon rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.  He also added a 4-yard touchdown catch.  Dayne captured the Wisconsin and Big Ten rushing record for yards in a season with 2,260, surpassing Ron Dayne’s record of 2,109. [Read more…]

Badgers one step closer to Big Ten title game

The Wisconsin Badgers moved one step closer to winning the Big Ten’s West Division and earning a spot in the Big Ten Championship game by holding off the Iowa Hawkeyes 26-24 in Iowa City.  It sets up a winner-take-all matchup with the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the West Division title at Camp Randall Stadium this Saturday.

The Badger defense has been the rock all season long and entered Saturday’s game as the top ranked defensive team in the nation.  But on this day, it would be the Badgers offense that would lead Wisconsin to victory.

After a slow start in the first half, Melvin Gordon picked up steam in the second half, rushing for 200 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns.  He also caught four passes for 64 yards.

Joel Stave had his best game of the season, completing 11 of 14 for 139 yards.  He was 4 of 5 on third-down passes, which has been a problem for the Badgers for much of the season.

Iowa scored 13 points in the fourth quarter but the Badgers were able to hold them off for the win.

Saturday’s win was the Badgers’ first in a one-score game since Week 3 of the 2012 season, when Wisconsin beat Gary Andersen’s Utah State team by two-points in his final year with the Aggies.

Badgers return from bye, host Maryland today

The Wisconsin Badgers have had a week off to get healthy and prepare for the Big Ten stretch drive.  Today, they’ll start that six-game stretch by hosting the Maryland Terrapins at Camp Randall Stadium (11am).

Maryland is coming off a 38-31 come-from-behind win over Iowa last Saturday, a game in which the Terrapins recorded four sacks against the Hawkeyes.

Starting defensive end Andre Monroe leads Maryland in sacks with 5 1/2, while the Terrapins have recorded 19 sacks, which ranks third in the Big Ten.

The Badgers have only allowed four sacks, which is tied for first.  But they don’t throw it as much as most Big Ten teams, relying more on the running of Melvin Gordon and Corey Clement. [Read more…]

Badgers celebrate victory going into bye week

Despite allowing a pair of late touchdowns, the Wisconsin Badgers notched a 38-28 win over Illinois in the Badgers Big Ten home opener at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

Wisconsin (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) moves into its second and final bye week of the season and will return to Camp Randall on Oct. 25 to host Maryland.  The Terrapins (4-2, 1-1) will host Iowa (5-1, 2-0) on Saturday.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen said he wants to continue to use two quarterbacks moving forward.  Joel Stave started Saturday and completed 7 of 14 passes for 73 yards.  McEvoy was given only one series, completing 3 of 4 for 24 yards and rushed once for 12 yards.

It’ll be interesting moving forward to see if McEvoy gets more time at wide receiver, if his quarterback reps continue to be limited. [Read more…]

Badgers to use both Stave and McEvoy against Illinois

October 7, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers haven’t named a starting quarterback for Saturday’s Big Ten home opener against Illinois.  In fact, the Wisconsin depth chart lists both Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave as co-starters.

What head coach Gary Andersen does know is that both Stave and McEvoy will play.  Andersen said they could also play at the same time with Stave throwing passes to McEvoy.

The 6’6 McEvoy played wide receiver in high school at Bergen Catholic High School in New Jersey before switching to quarterback as a senior.

McEvoy, after not earning time at quarterback last season, he moved to wide receiver and was making plays until he suffered a broken bone in his hand that forced him to wear a [Read more…]

Badgers fall from top 25

October 5, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers dropped out of the top 25 in both National polls, following Saturday’s 20-14 loss to Northwestern in the Big Ten opener in Evanston, Ill.

Wisconsin (3-2, 0-1) was intercepted four times and missed several chances in the red zone in the loss.

Joel Stave took over for Tanner McEvoy at quarterback late in the first half.  Neither one of them got adequate protection from the Badgers offensive line.  McEvoy was hit as he threw his only interception and Stave’s arm was hit on the first of his three picks.

The receivers struggled to get open and make plays, but the quarterbacks certainly are not void from blame.  Neither performed well enough and Stave had first and goal at the three in the second half.  Instead of throwing the ball away when he couldn’t find an open receiver, he forced it and threw one of his three interceptions.

Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon rushed for a career high 259 yards, but that wasn’t enough to turn the fortunes of the Badgers on this day.  Gordon became the 12th UW runner to break the 3,000-yard mark.

Stave finished 8 of 19 and tossed a 19-yard touchdown pass to Kenzel Doe with 4-minutes and 14-seconds left in the first half.  McEvoy was ineffective through four series, finishing 4 of 10 passing for 24 yards, which is why Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen made the quarterback switch. [Read more…]

Stave to backup McEvoy on Saturday

October 3, 2014 By Bill Scott

Joel Stave will be Wisconsin’s No. 2 quarterback when the Badgers open Big Ten play on Saturday at Northwestern.

Stave struggled with accuracy in training camp and fell down the depth chart for the first four games of the season.  Now, if the situation is right, Stave could play Saturday against the Wildcats in Evanston.

Redshirt sophomore Bart Houston held the backup spot for the first four games after Stave wasn’t ready to play.

Coach Gary Andersen said Stave has definitely progressed and is throwing the ball much better.

Stave says he’s feeling much better about his throwing

October 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin Badger starter Joel Stave says he hasn’t had any mental blocks in weeks and said he’ll be prepared to take the field is necessary.

Stave had issues during training camp that led to him not being able to complete even the most routine passes.  It was one month ago that Stave detailed to a large group of reporters, just exactly what the issues were with regards to his throwing and his dropped down the depth chart.

Yesterday, Stave told reporters that he feels a lot better than he did a month ago.

Stave hasn’t played this season and there’s no guarantee he’ll move into the backup spot behind Tanner McEvoy just because he said he’s ready to go if needed.

Badgers coach Gary Andersen said offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig will have to decide if they can count on Stave to perform under pressure. [Read more…]
