Brewers send Rodriguez to Baltimore (AUDIO)

July 24, 2013 By Bill Scott

With the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline approaching, the Milwaukee Brewers have seen their name surface in a number of rumors.  One of those names was Francisco Rodriguez, and Tuesday he was traded.

The Brewers sent Rodriguez to the Baltimore Orioles for 3B prospect Nick Delmonico.  After the worse season of his 12-year career in 2012,  K-Rod has been able to bounce back.  Without a team to begin the season, Rodriguez signed a minor league deal with the Brewers that gave him a month to make it to the big leagues.  He did just that and has posted a 1.05 ERA with a perfect 10 for 10 run in save opportunities for the Brewers.  General Manager Doug Melvin was determined to make a move Tuesday…

The team reacts to Braun’s suspension (AUDIO)

July 23, 2013 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun

Monday’s news of Ryan Braun’s 65-game suspension for violating MLB’s drug program didn’t necessarily tell the whole story.  After months of speculation to what baseball would do in wake of the Biogenesis investigation, the answer came, but Braun already left the building.

Shortly after meeting with Milwaukee General Manager Doug Melvin, Braun spoke to his teammates before leaving Miller Park.  It will likely be 2014 Spring Training before the MVP talks to reporters.  As for what Melvin had to say…

Gomez secures a 4-3 win for the Brewers (AUDIO)

July 9, 2013 By Bill Scott

It appeared for a moment that Reds first basemen Joey Votto was going to be the hero at Miller Park Monday night.  With the Brewers leading 4-3 in the top of the 9th, Votto was a the plate with a runner on and 2-outs facing Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez.  Votto lifted a towering, deep fly ball to center field that had home run distance.   The only problem was Milwaukee outfielder Carlos Gomez tracked it down, leaped at the wall and secured the catch over the fence to give the Brewers the win.

AUDIO: Carlos Gomez on his game saving catch :14

It was the 4th time this year Gomez has robbed an opposing player of a home run.  No other player in baseball has done it more than twice.  It was an ending to a game that Brewers Manager Ron Roenicke had never seen before…

Trade rumors flying already

July 5, 2013 By Bill Scott

Baseball’s non-waiver trade deadline comes up at the end of the month, which means

GM Doug Melvin

GM Doug Melvin

the trade rumors are going to start flying.

Yesterday, Fox Sports reported the Brewers and Diamondbacks are in the midst of “ongoing discussions” concerning starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo and relievers Francisco Rodriguez, John Axford and Jim Henderson.

Gallardo (6-8) has struggled this season, but Rodriguez, Axford and Henderson have all pitched well.

Gallardo is just 27-years-old and his contract would be favorable for teams looking to land him.

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has said previously that the Brewers would be sellers and not buyers.  Melvin’s phone has been ringing already and he’s expecting more where that came from.

Bullpen loses it for the Brewers (AUDIO)

June 21, 2013 By Bill Scott

The 2013 season has been full of moments to forget for the Milwaukee Brewers.  Thursday’s game falls into that category as the Brewers fell 7-4 in 10-innings to the Houston Astros.

Jim Henderson was given the ball in the 8th inning with the Brewers ahead 4-3 and gave up a solo-homer to Carlos Corporan to tie the game 4-4.  In the 10th, Michael Gonzalez served up the game winner to Carlos Pena, a no doubt, 3-run walk off long ball. [Read more…]

Weeks lifts Brewers to victory

June 20, 2013 By Bill Scott

Rickie Weeks connected on two-run home-run in the 8th inning Wednesday night to help lift the Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Astros.

With Norichika Aoki out on paternity leave, Weeks was slotted in the lead-off spot in the lineup.  He came through with his 6th homer of the year and added another hit for a 2 for 4 night.  He is now batting .406 in the month of June, after being put in a platoon with Scooter Gennett because of a .186 average the first two months of the season.

Aramis Ramirez added a solo homer in the 9th, his 9th of the season.

Brewers cough up lead, fall to Marlins

June 12, 2013 By Bill Scott

Giancarlo Stanton came off of the disabled list and belted a 2-run homer in the 8th inning to give the Miami Marlins a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

The Brewers trailed early but rebounded to take a 4-3 lead before Stanton’s blow in the 8th off of Brewers reliever Jim Henderson.

Wily Peralta struggled in the second inning, surrendering 3-runs on 5-hits in the frame but settle down after that.

AUDIO: Ron Roenicke on Peralta’s outing :20

Michael Gonzalez and John Axford combined to work a scoreless 7th before Henderson served up Stanton’s blast in the 8th.

The series is tied 1-1 with the third and final game set for tonight in Miami.  Alfredo Figaro (0-0, 4.08) pitches for the Brewers.  Kevin Slowey (1-5, 4.16) goes for the Marlins.

WRN Sports Daily (Video)

June 5, 2013 By Bill Scott

Major League Baseball’s trade deadline doesn’t get here until the end of July.  But considering the Brewers 22-35 record, it’s never to early to start taking a look at players the Brewers could be looking to move in exchange for some talented young players.

Most of us agree the Brewers will be sellers by that time instead of buyers.  GM Doug Melvin even said himself that the only deals they’d be interested in are deals in which the Brewers are getting young players in return.

In today’s WRN Sports Daily, I take a look at the players on the roster that I think the Brewers could be offering up in return for some young talented prospects.

It’s time for Axford to go (Video) (Google Hangout)

May 15, 2013 By Bill Scott

What are the Milwaukee Brewers going to do with former closer John Axford, who blew it again last night in a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh in 12-innings.

Axford entered last night’s game in the 8th inning, trying to protect a 3-2 lead.  Two hits later and the game was tied.  The 3rd blow save for Axford this season as his ERA climbs to 9.20.  In 14.2 innings of work, Axford has allowed 24 hits, just shy of 2 per inning.  He’s also allowed 16 runs this season, 15 of them earned.

Certainly Ron Roenicke needs to change his approach with Axford if he’s going to stay in Milwaukee.  Axford can’t be trusted with the lead.

Francisco Rodriguez

The Brewers might have an alternative.  Francisco Rodriguez pitched at Triple (A) again last night and issued a walk while striking out 3.  He’s pitched well during his month in the minors and the Brewers now have a decision to make.  Move him up to the big league club and pay him a $2-million salary, or release him outright. Brewers blow lead, fall to Pirates

May 15, 2013 By Bill Scott

Once again, the Milwaukee Brewers took a lead into the late innings, only to come away with a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 12-innings.

Andrew McCutchen provided the decisive blow, a walk-off home run to right-center field off of Mike Fiers to win it for the Pirates.

Milwaukee held a 3-2 lead in the 8th inning.  That’s when manager Ron Roenicke went to former closer John Axford.  Axford gave up a leadoff single to Neil Walker and a run scoring double to Russell Martin to allow the Pirates to tie the game. [Read more…]
