Brewers elect not to bring Schoop back

December 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers GM David Stearns told reporters on Friday that the trade that brought Jonathan Schoop to Milwaukee for the final months of last season was a “bad deal”.

The Brewers weren’t willing to take a shot at arbitration with Schoop and didn’t offer him a deal for 2019.  It makes Schoop a free agent.

The Brewers also declined to make offers by the Friday deadline to left-handed relievers Dan Jennings and Xavier Cedeno.  They tendered contracts to all of their remaining arbitration-eligible players, including infielders Hernan Perez and Tyler Saladino.

Schoop played 46 games with the Brewers, but struggled.  He hit just four home runs and drove in 21 runs while striking out 41 times in 124 at-bats.  He earned $8.5 million last season and was projected to get around $10 million in his final year of arbitration.

The Brewers currently have 36 players on their 40-man roster, giving them some flexibility in free agency.

Brewers climb to within one game of Cubs in Central

September 11, 2018 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 in Chicago on Monday night.

Jonathan Schoop and Orlando Arcia also drove in runs for the Brewers, who climbed to within one-game of Chicago for the Central Division lead.

The Brewers have now won four straight games and 10 of their last 12, while the Cubs have dropped three straight.

After a slow start for Cubs starter Jon Lester, he was in control, retiring the first two hitters in the sixth inning.  But that’s when Lester started to suffer lower back stiffness, allowing a single to Moustakas and a double to Erik Kratz.

The Cubs went to Carl Edwards Jr., who uncorked a wild pitch on the very first pitch, allowing Moustakas to score what turned out to be the game winning run.

Josh Hader took over for the Brewers in the seventh inning and struck out all six batters he faced.  Jeremy Jeffress came on to save it for the Brewers in the ninth.

The Brewers and Cubs play game two of their series at Wrigley Field tonight.  Jhoulys Chacin (14-6, 3.59) goes for the Brewers.  Jose Quintana (12-9, 4.14) gets the nod for the Cubs.

Yelich powers Brewers to win over Reds

August 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Christian Yelich went 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 13-12, 10-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday night.

Yelich became the eighth Brewers player to hit for the cycle and the first since George Kottaras on Sept. 3, 2011, in Houston.  He also matched the club record with six of the Brewers 22 hits, including a two-run homer.

The two teams combined for nine home runs and 36 hits in the wild, back and forth battle.

Jesus Aguilar homered in the 10th inning off of Raisel Iglesias for the Brewers fourth home run of the game.  It ended Aguilar’s month-long slide, giving him 30 home runs for the season.

Mike Moustakas and Jonathan Schoop also homered for the Brewers.  Moustakas had four hits.

The Brewers and Reds wrap up their three game series this afternoon.  Wade Miley (2-2, 2.32) pitches for the Brewers.  Cody Reed (0-1, 3.68) gets the nod for the Reds.

One day after being blanked by the rival Milwaukee, the Chicago Cubs responded by beating the Brewers 8-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

Junior Guerra entered the game with a career 1.74 ERA against the Cubs, but he allowed seven runs and nine hits before departing in the fourth.

Ryan Braun, who clubbed two home runs just one day earlier, left Wednesday’s game with a tight right ribcage.  It comes after Braun had been swinging a hot bat.  He had been hitting .388 with four HR’s and 12 RBI over the last 16 games.

The Cubs scored four runs in the first three innings against Guerra.  Anthony Rizzo lined a two-run home run in the first.  Jason Heyward doubled in a run in the  third, followed by David Bote scoring on a Guerra wild pitch to make it 4-0. [Read more…]

Brewers acquire Schoop from Baltimore

July 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers, just before the non-waiver trade deadline expires, have acquired infielder Jonathan Schoop (pronounced “Scope”) from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for second baseman Jonathan Villar, right-handed pitcher Luis Ortiz and infielder Jean Carmona.

The 26-year-old Schoop was hitting .244 with 17 HR and 40 RBI in 85 games with the Orioles this season.  He made a total of 84 starts, all at second base.  Schoop has hit safety in 22 of his last 23 games, batting .360 with 9 HR and 19 RBI during that stretch.  He brings a 12-game hitting streak to Milwaukee, posting a .345 batting average (19-for-55) with 7 HR and 16 RBI.

Schoop is under team control through the 2019 season and has played his entire six-year career with Baltimore.  His career average is .261 with 106 HR and 312 RBI in 635 games.
