June 12, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers bullpen has been leaking water.  That leak got bigger on Sunday as the Brewers dropped their second straight to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 11-1 at Chase Field.

Chase Anderson allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work, striking out eight for the Brewers.  The bullpen coughed up 10 runs in three innings as the Diamondbacks broke the game open.

Carlos Torres and Neftali Feliz gave up three homers and five runs in the seventh.  Rob Scahill and Wily Peralta then combined to allow five more runs in the eighth, including a grand slam by Paul Goldschmidt off of Scahill.

Torres has now allowed 16 hits in his last 6 1/3 innings, including four home runs with a 14.22 ERA over that period.  Feliz saw his ERA jump to 5.88 with seven homers allowed in 26 innings.

Brewers top prospect Lewis Bronson made his major league debut on Sunday, going 0-for-2 with a pair of walks and was credited with his first stolen base.  In his first at-bat against left-hander Robbie Ray, D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed made a diving stop and throwing out Brinson at first base. Bullpen caves as Brewers fall to Giants (AUDIO)

June 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers bullpen suffered its 17th loss of the season which easily leads the Major Leagues.  San Francisco scored two runs in the 8th and three more in the ninth to pull out a 7-2 win over the Brewers in their series opener at Miller Park on Monday night.

The Brewers dropped to 1-3 on their home stand and 15-18 at Miller Park this season.

The Brewers got both of their runs in the first inning, on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error.  Giants starter Jeff Samardzija quickly settled in, retiring 19 straight hitters.  That streak ended when Hernan Perez doubled with one out in the seventh, but Samardzija struck out Nick Franklin and Jonathan Villar to end the threat.

Samardzija ended up pitching 7 2/3 innings, holding the Brewers to six hits and one earned run while striking out 10.

Eric Sogard had two of the Brewers six hits out of the leadoff spot as he continues to earn more playing time. [Read more…]

Brewers drop series opener against Toronto

May 24, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped back-to-back games for the first time since May 5-6, falling to the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 in their series opener on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

The Blue Jays scored a pair of runs in the second inning and twice more in the fifth off of Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson.

The two run second inning could have been worse for the Brewers.  Toronto loaded the bases with nobody out but Nelson wiggled out of the jam without any major damage.

In the fifth inning, Jose Bautista reached on a single with two outs, then Kendrys Morales clubbed a long home run to center field to give Toronto a 4-0 lead. [Read more…]

Manny Pina capped off a five-run rally in the eighth inning with a three-run home run to lift the Milwaukee Brewers to a 11-9 win over the New York Mets at Miller Park on Sunday.  It gave the Brewers a three game sweep of the Mets in the series.

The Brewers trailed 7-1 in the fifth and 9-6 in the 8th before the come back.

Orlando Arcia led off with a walk and Jonathan Villar singled.  Hernan Perez clubbed a two run single and Pina finished it with a three-run homer.

Pina called it easily the biggest hit of his career and it came on Mothers Day, with his wife Leny and their two young children in the stands watching. [Read more…]

Brewers power their way to win over Red Sox (AUDIO)

May 10, 2017 By Bill Scott

After Mookie Betts clubbed a leadoff home run for Boston in the first inning, Eric Thames and Keon Broxton each clubbed two-run homers in the bottom half of the inning and the Brewers went on to score a 11-7 win over the Red Sox in the series opener at Miller Park.

The long balls by Thames and Broxton were part of a five run first inning as the Brewers have now outscored their opponents in the first inning 33-10 this season.  The blasts also pushed the Brewers major league best total to 55.

Broxton finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four rbi’s.  He finished a double shy of the cycle but [Read more…]

Nelson struggles as Brewers fall to Cardinals

April 24, 2017 By Bill Scott

Control issues are not something Jimmy Nelson hasn’t dealt with before, but after a couple of solid outings to start the season, the Milwaukee Brewers were hoping those issues were behind their right-hander.

But Nelson’s command problems returned on Sunday as he issued six walks in 5 1/3 innings as the Brewers fell to the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4.

After winning the series opener on Thursday night, the Brewers dropped three straight games and are now 0-3 in home series this season. [Read more…]

Chase Anderson tossed seven innings of 3-hit, shutout ball as the Milwaukee Brewers pulled out a 2-0 win and two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.

Anderson walked two and struck out seven and has now pitched 13 innings in two starts, allowing only six  hits and one run with four walks and 11 strikeouts.  He improved to 1-0 on the season with a 0.69 ERA.

The Brewers got a second inning run-scoring double from Keon Broxton and a sixth inning solo home run from Jonathan Villar to account for their two runs.

World Baseball Classic hero Marcus Stroman took the loss for the Blue Jays.  He went the full nine innings, allowing seven hits.  He fell to 1-1 on the season and still owns the only victory for the Blue Jays, who fell to 1-7. [Read more…]

Peralta leads Brewers to first win of the season

Wily Peralta pitched five innings of three-hit, shutout ball to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to their first win of the season, a 6-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night at Miller Park.  Peralta walked one and struck out five hitters and left after five with a rising pitch count.

Eric Thames led off the fourth inning with a home run to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.  Ryan Braun followed with an infield single and Travis Shaw added another round-tripper to put the Brewers up 3-0.

Jonathan Villar also homered for the Brewers in the victory, but the turning point may have been the sixth inning.  The Rockies had runners at 1st and 2nd with nobody out and Carlos Gonzalez hit a sharp grounder that looked like trouble,  but Thames made a diving stop and got a force out at second base.  Villar and Orlando Arcia combined to turn a double play to get the Brewers out of the jam. Brewers drop opener, lose Guerra to injury (AUDIO)

April 3, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind early, fought back to take the lead, then some sloppy defense and untimely hitting cost them in a 7-5 Colorado Rockies victory in the 2017 season opener at Miller Park.

Starting pitcher Junior Guerra left the game in the bottom of the third, suffering a calf strain while running to first base after a sacrifice bunt.

By the time the Brewers came to bat in the fifth inning, they were behind 4-0 and Rockies starter Jon Gray had already recorded seven strikeouts.

But the Brewers put five runs on the board in the fifth, getting run scoring doubles from Jonathan Villar, Eric Thames and Travis Shaw to take a 5-4 lead. [Read more…]

Gennett waived by Brewers, claimed by Reds (AUDIO)

March 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Scooter Gennett – Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Scooter Gennett’s stay with the Milwaukee Brewers came to an end on Tuesday when he was waived and eventually claimed by the Cincinnati Reds.

The Brewers had looked to trade Gennett since the end of last season, when they made the decision to move Jonathan Villar to second base.  But the Brewers couldn’t find a trade partner and Gennett came to training camp, trying to hook on in a utility role.

But the Brewers decided Gennett wasn’t going to be in their plans, especially with a $2.525 million salary so they put him on waivers. [Read more…]
