Brewers add pitcher from Korean League

December 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers added right-handed pitcher Josh Lindblom from the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) on Wednesday.

The two sides agreed to a three-year deal, guaranteeing $9.125 million to the 32-year-old Lindblom.  He pitched the last five seasons in the KBO.

Lindblom was used primarily as a reliever in the Major Leagues, but he switched to a starter in Korea.  Lindblom went 20-3 with a 2.50 ERA in 30 starts last season.  Londblom was named the most valuable player in the league for his performance.

Overall, Lindblom was 35-7 with a 2.68 ERA in 56 starts in the KBO.

The Brewers are looking for starting pitching help after losing Jordan Lyles and Gio Gonzalez to free agency and the trades of Zach Davies and Chase Anderson.

Lindblom was a second-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Purdue in 2008 and spent time in the majors with the Dodgers, Phillies, Rangers, A’s and Pirates.

Brewers clinch second straight post season playoff berth (AUDIO)

September 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

It’ll go down as a September to remember.  The Milwaukee Brewers clinched at least a wildcard playoff spot for the second straight year, capping things off with a 9-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Wednesday night.

It’s the 6th straight win, the 17th in the last 19 games and a 19-4 month of September for the Brewers, who came from five-games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League wildcard race.  They also did it after losing Christian Yelich to a season ending knee injury, improving to 12-2 since losing their MVP.

The division leading Cardinals lost again on Wednesday as the Brewers climbed to within a game and a half of St. Louis.  If the Brewers can win today, they’ll move to within a game of the Cardinals, who have the day off.  The Brewers also trail the Nationals by one-game in the chase for the top wildcard spot. Brewers win 5th straight, reduce magic number to 1

The Milwaukee Brewers stayed hot, winning their fifth straight game, 4-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Tuesday night.  It’s the 16th win in the last 18 games and moved the Brewers to 18-4 in the month of September.

With the Chicago Cubs falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2, the Brewers magic number to clinch a wildcard playoff spot is now down to one.

Sonny Gray entered the game for Cincinnati with a 2-0 record and 1.85 ERA in four starts against the Brewers this season.  But the Brewers got three early runs off of him and let their bullpen do the rest.

Cincinnati scored first, on back-to-back doubles from Joey Votto and Aristedes Aquino in the bottom of the first inning.  The Reds increased their lead to 2-0 after Ryan Braun’s attempt at a diving catch failed. [Read more…]

Brewers offense goes MIA in loss to Padres

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers were held to just three hits and fell to the San Diego Padres 2-1 at Miller Park on Wednesday night.

Padres starter Dinelson Lamet struck out 14 Brewers in his six innings of work to earn the win (3-5).  It snapped the Brewers four-game winning streak, as they lost for just the second time in the last 13 games.

The Padres scored first in the third inning.  Greg Garcia led off with a base hit and Seth Mejias-Brean followed with a home run to right-center field on a 0-2 pitch from Brewers starter Adrian Houser.

The Brewers put runners on second third in the bottom half of the inning with one out, but Lamet struck out Yasmani Grandal and Mike Moustakas to end the threat.

Houser (6-7) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits with no walks and five strikeouts in five [Read more…]

Brewers getting help from the unexpected, take 3 of 4 from Cubs

September 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Tyler Austin’s pinch-hit three-run homer snapped a 3-all tie in a five-run fourth inning, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 8-5 win over the Chicago Cubs in the series finale at Miller Park on Sunday.

Eric Thames also homered as Milwaukee took 3-of-4 in the series, doing what they had to do to get back into Wild Card playoff contention.  The Brewers dropped the series opener on Thursday night, then won three straight to climb to within two games of the Cubs for the final Wild Card spot.

Last week, manager Craig Counsell said if his team was going to have a chance, they were going to need to get contributions from backup players and that’s what he got this past weekend.

Austin’s home run off of Cubs starter Jon Lester was the biggest blow, but Tyrone Taylor got his first major league hit, an RBI single in the sixth and pitcher Brent Suter worked two innings of relief for his first win since June 21, 2018.

Eric Thames also homered against Lester, who gave up all eight runs.

The Brewers also pulled to within a half-game of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who lost in a walk-off to the Cincinnati Reds.  The Philadelphia Phillies won, so they stay tied with the Brewers.

The Brewers open a seven-game road trip with the first of a four game series tonight in Miami against the Marlins.  Jordan Lyles (10-8, 4.46) faces Miami’s Robert Dugger (0-1, 4.00) in the pitching matchup.

Thames powers Brewers past Astros

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames’ three-run homer capped a four-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to double up the Astros 4-2 at Miller Park.  Thames homer came off of Houston starter Zach Greinke.  Ryan Braun’s RBI single tied it at one for the Brewers, before Thames long ball.

Jordan Lyles continued his strong performance on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 innings.  Drew Pomeranz followed with  1 2/3 innings of solid relief before Josh Hader finished up in the 9th for his 28th save.

Lyles (10-8), surrendered six hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.  His ERA in seven starts for the Brewers, dropped to 2.56.

With the Brewers leading 4-1 in the sixth, Houston’s Alex Bregman clubbed a solo homer to center to make it 4-2 to close out the scoring.

The Brewers have the day off on Wednesday before opening a crucial four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Miller Park on Thursday night.  Chase Anderson is scheduled to face Jose Quintana in the series opener. [Read more…]

Hiura leads Brewers to much needed win

Keston Hiura homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park on Wednesday.

Jordan Lyles allowed one run and struck out nine while pitching into the sixth to earn the victory.  It’s his fourth win since joining the Brewers.

Josh Hader closed out the win with a six-out save, the 26th of the season and first since August 5th.

Kolton Wong had three of the Cardinals seven hits, including a shot home run off of Lyles.

The Brewers got to Cardinals starter and loser Jack Flaherty early, scoring once in each of the first two innings.  Hiura drove in the first run with an rbi groundout.

Ryan Braun scored the second run on a sac fly by Orlando Arcia.

The Brewers increased their lead to 3-0 in the fourth when Hiura homered to left on a 3-0 pitch. [Read more…]

Brewers drop third straight, falling further behind in wild card race

August 28, 2019 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Yadier Molina hit two home runs and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games with a 6-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on Tuesday night.

Miles Mikolas struck out 10 without a walk to earn the win for St. Louis, which has now won 15 of its last 18 games.

The game was delayed in the seventh inning for nine minutes after the Brewers got caught by a pop-up shower while the roof was open.

Yasmani Grandal drew the Brewers to within 4-3 in the eighth inning, clubbing a two-run homer.  But when the Brewers couldn’t draw even, manager Craig Counsell went to rookie Devin Williams in the 9th, instead of closer Josh Hader.  The Cardinals tacked on two more in the ninth to make it 6-3.

The Brewers put two runners aboard in the bottom of the 9th and for a brief moment looked like they [Read more…]

Yelich powers Brewers past Pirates

Christian Yelich (File Photo)

Christian Yelich clubbed his league leading 38th and 39th home runs of the season, helping the Milwaukee Brewers knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates
9-7 in Pittsburgh on Monday night.

The second of Yelich’s home runs landed in the Allegheny River.

Rookie Trent Grisham got another start and drove in three runs, while Mike Moustakas also homered in the win.

Jordan Lyles picked up his sixth win of the year, pitching five innings against his former team as the Brewers ended their four-game losing streak.

Bryan Reynolds stole Moustakas’ first bid for a homer in the second at the left field wall, and then homered in the fourth for the Pirates.  Pablo Reyes hit a pinch-hit homer in the fifth and Kevin Newman added a bases clearing 3-run double in the eighth.  The Pirates have now lost three straight.

The Brewers didn’t gain any ground on the first place Cubs, who also beat Oakland 6-5 on Monday night.  But they did climb to within 1 1/2 games of second place St. Louis after the Cardinals were blanked by the L.A. Dodgers 8-0.

Game two of the series is tonight.  Chase Anderson gets the start for the Brewers.

Davies to the IL

The Brewers now have a third starting pitcher on the injured list.  Zach Davies is on the 10-day IL with back spasms.  Davies joins fellow starters Brandon Woodruff and Jhoulys Chacin, who are dealing with oblique injuries.

For the second time in three days Josh Hader gave up a game winning home run, and the Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Oakland Athletics 5-3 Thursday afternoon in Oakland.

Milwaukee got a very strong performance from starting pitcher Chase Anderson, who allowed one run over six innings.  The Brewers built up a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth, when Hader walked the leadoff man and gave up a two-run home run to Matt Chapman.  It was the third straight appearance for Hader, who allowed a game winning home run Tuesday night.

Despite losing two of three games in the series, the Brewers received good starting pitching.  Adrian Houser, Jordan Lyles and Anderson allowed three runs over 16 innings.  The Brewers scored just nine runs in the series and thirteen in their last four games.

On Friday the Brewers open a three game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.  The Brewers enter play two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.  Zach Davies will pitch against Jose Quintana.
