Badgers fall one game short

April 7, 2015 By Bill Scott

The most memorable season in Wisconsin basketball history fell one win short.  The Badgers led by 9 with just over 13-minutes to play against Duke, but the Blue Devils went on a 10-0 run and closed out a 68-63 victory over the Badgers to win their 5th National Championship.

The Badgers had the most difficult road, beating teams like Oregon, North Carolina, Arizona and Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.  But even after falling to Duke way back in December at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, the Badgers couldn’t return the favor in last night’s NCAA Championship game.

Four seniors, Frank Kaminsky, Josh Gasser, Traevon Jackson and Duje Dukan, played their final games for the Badgers.  Junior forward Sam Dekker hasn’t announced whether or not he’ll be back next season.

NCAA helping with family expenses: It’s a start

For those who think the NCAA should be doing more to help the players, who the ones responsible for making the organization a boat load of money each season, well they’re making an effort.

The NCAA is using a pilot program to pay up to $3,000 total for travel, hotel and meal expenses for family members of each player who competes in the upcoming national semifinals.  For those players that win and advance to the National Championship, the organization is adding up to another $1,000.

Wisconsin Badger guard Josh Gasser said the NCAA should be contributing money for every round of the tournament, not just the Final Four.  But it’s a start.

AUDIO: Josh Gasser says the NCAA’s effort to help families with expenses is a start :21

Each player is allotted six tickets for family members, in addition to the money given by the NCAA.  But considering the fact that teams travel twice prior to the Final Four, which means airfare, hotels, meals and tickets, they can build up a sizeable bill even before they get any relief from the NCAA at the Final Four.

Traevon Jackson

Traevon Jackson

After missing 17 games with a broken right foot, Wisconsin senior guard Traevon Jackson has returned to practice with his Badger teammates.

It remains unclear if Jackson will play when Wisconsin (31-3) opens the NCAA Tournament against Coastal Carolina (24-9) on Friday in Omaha, Nebraska.

“Right now I’m not there yet but each day I feel better,” Jackson said.  “I feel stronger as I keep going.  I’m not going to rush back.”

Jackson averaged 9.4 points in Wisconsin’s first 17 games.  The Badgers are 16-1 since Bronson Koenig took over for Jackson.  Koenig is averaging 12.2 points and shooting 46.5% from three-point range.

Nobody is sure how Jackson will play after being sidelined for so long, including Jackson himself.  But his teammates are eager to get him back and fellow guard Josh Gasser feels Jackson will play on Friday.

The 6th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers expected a much stiffer challenge from 25th-ranked Iowa last night, but it never came.

The Badgers played their most complete game of the season, playing solid defense, shooting well and committing just one turnover in the game (a shot clock violation).

Wisconsin (17-2, 5-1) got 17 points and eight rebounds from forward Sam Dekker, 16 points and five rebounds from Nigel Hayes, 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists from Frank Kaminsky and 13 points from sophomore guard Bronson Koenig in the win.

The Badgers hit 6 of 14 (42.9%) from three-point range in the first half and finished 9 of 22 for the game.

Former Badger Jarrod Uthoff was the only Iowa player to score in double figures.  He had 12.

Wisconsin won for the second time without Traevon Jackson and moved into a tie for first place with Maryland, which shares the same record as the Badgers.  The Terrapins play Thursday at Indiana.  The Badgers are off until Saturday when they face the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.
