Ryan reaches 300 victories at Wisconsin

December 5, 2013 By Bill Scott

The 8th ranked Wisconsin Badgers didn’t have Josh Gasser last season after he went

Josh Gasser

down with a serious knee injury before the season began.  But Gasser is back and he led the defensive charge in helping Wisconsin beat Virginia 48-38 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Charlottesville.

Gasser scored 11 points and junior center Frank Kaminsky added 9 points and a career-high 12 rebounds as the Badgers ran their record to a perfect 9-0.  The win comes despite 28.8% shooting from the field.

But Gasser and the rest of the Badgers did a number on the Cavaliers defensively.  Virginia shot just 23.4% from the field and senior guard Joe Harris was held to two points on 1 of 10 shooting.  Gasser drew the defensive assignment on Harris, who scored 22 points in Virginia’s Challenge win over the Badgers in Madison last year.

Offensively, Gasser  was 2 of 2 from the field (both 3-pointers) and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Only eight other coaches has won 300 games at a Big Ten school and only former Indiana coach Bob Knight has a better winning percentage.

The Badgers shoot for their 10th straight win when they host Marquette on Saturday.

Gasser, who suffered LCL, ACL and Meniscus injuries, began practicing about two weeks ago and is considered to be ahead of schedule.

Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan announced Sunday that Gasser has been cleared to play during the Badgers 5-game, 8-day exhibition trip to Canada which begins on Wednesday in Ottawa.

Gasser coping with season ending knee injury

October 31, 2012 By Bill Scott

Josh Gasser was preparing to take over as the Wisconsin Badgers starting

Josh Gasser

point guard.  He worked hard in the offseason and entered training camp ready to replace the graduated Jordan Taylor.

That all came crashing down when Gasser tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during practice last week.

AUDIO: Gasser on the injury :16

Gasser met with reporters on Tuesday for the first time since injuring his knee.  He’s getting used to his new roles, which include mentoring, cheerleading and a even some assistant coaching.  It’ll help keep him busy in a positive way after losing his season.

AUDIO: Gasser says he wanted badly to be the point guard this season :23

Gasser thinks the Badgers will be well served in his place with the trio of George Marshall, Traevon Jackson and Ben Brust.

Gasser said he’s talked to a number of current and former UW athletes that have undergone similar fates.  their advice is to listen to your doctors and avoid the urge to rush back.
