Former guard Josh Sitton, who played eight seasons (2008-15) in Green Bay, has informed the club of his decision to retire with the Packers.

Sitton, who was originally selected by the Packers in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Central Florida, started 112 of 121 regular-season games and all 13 postseason games he appeared in for the Packers.  From 2009-15, he started 110 games, which is the most by a Packer offensive lineman.

Sitton was named to the Pro Bowl three times with the Packers (2012, ’14-15) and was also selected second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press three times (2013-15).  He was the first Green Bay guard to be named to the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons since Marco Rivera went to three straight from 2002-04.  He was also selected as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Sitton played on the Packers 2010 Super Bowl team and joins former teammates T.J. Lang and Jordy Nelson in retiring this offseason.

The 32-year-old spent eight seasons with the Packers, starting in 2008 and started every game in six of his last seven years with the team.

The Packers let Sitton go prior to the 2016 season.  He spent two years in Chicago with the Bears and his last season with Miami, although he played in just one game after suffering a torn rotator cuff.

The Green Bay Packers have signed left tackle David Bakhtiari to a four-year contract extension, worth a reported $51.67 million.

The deal averages $12 million a year, which puts Bakhtiari among the top five highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL.

Bakhtiari will receive roughly $17 million in guaranteed money at the time of signing and then earn an additional $10.7 million in March roster bonuses and workout pay.

The extension for Bakhtiari comes almost two weeks after they released Josh Sitton.

The Packers have two other offensive lineman set to become free agents at the end of the season, T.J. Lang and J.C. Tretter.

McCarthy says a lot went into Sitton’s release

September 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, at his Monday press conference to explain the organization’s move to release Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton.  McCarthy said, “There’s a lot of things that go into this decision.”

The problem between Sitton and the Packers organization may have come late last season when the guard was critical of the offensive game plan in a regular season game against Arizona.  A short time later, McCarthy told reporters that Sitton needs to play guard, instead of bellyaching about play calling.

When asked  how cutting a veteran player like Sitton could impact the locker room, McCarthy said:  I’m not going to sit here and go through every variable, every component of our program, but each player is evaluated.  Every person that touches the locker room has always been evaluated because the locker room is the most important room in our building, frankly, in my opinion.  Decisions are made all the time about trying to improve and continue the flow of growth for our football program. Sitton signs 3-year deal with the Bears

September 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton

Just one day after the Green Bay Packers released him, three-time Pro Bowl guard Josh Sitton agreed to a three-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

Sitton’s deal is reportedly worth $21.5-million over three years, including a $10 million signing bonus.

The 30-year old Sitton was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the season, but the Packers were looking to likely move on after this season.  Now, the Packers are moving on without Sitton and saving $6.55 million, giving them more salary cap space to try to resign other players that are set to become free agents after the season.

Starters T.J. Lang, J.C. Tretter and David Bakhtiari are all set to become free agents at the end of the season.

The news was circulating around 2 p.m. central time on Saturday, about an hour before NFL teams had to  have their rosters trimmed to the league’s regular season limit of 53 players.  The team reportedly told All-Pro guard Josh Sitton that he was going to be released by the team, if they couldn’t find a trade partner before the deadline.

In the end, the Green Bay Packers couldn’t come up with a deal and released the eighth year pro.

There was speculation that Sitton was unhappy with his contract and was headed for a standoff.  Yet Sitton would later tell the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he was not making waves about his having one year left on his contract and was totally caught by surprised when notified by his agent on Saturday morning that he was being released. Green Bay Packers left guard Josh Sitton has already had an outstanding career in the NFL.  Sitton would love to play several more years and he figures to do so, but he needs to find ways to take stress off of his back and joints.

Sitton, who turns 30 in June, told reporters last week that he dropped 20 pounds since the end of last season.  He said he’s trying to lose some of the bad weight and put better weight back on.

Sitton said, “as you get older, you just need to do certain things to maintain to be able to play as many years as you can, and I’m trying to be around for a long time.  When you’re 22, 23, 24, you can carry this heavy weight [Read more…]

Packers awarded two fourth round compensatory picks

March 12, 2016 By Bill Scott

Ted Thompson

The Green Bay Packers have been awarded two fourth-round compensatory draft picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Packers will have the 131st and 137th picks in the fourth-round.  Along with the 125th selection, which was their own, the Packers will have three selections in the fourth round.

The two compensatory picks can’t be traded, but that will change in 2017.

The compensatory selections come after the packers lost cornerbacks Tramon Williams and Davon House in free agency.  Williams signed with Cleveland and House in Jacksonville.

Under general manager Ted Thompson, the Packers have received 15 compensatory picks.  The best use of those picks came with defensive end Mike Daniels in 2012 and guard Josh Sitton in 2008.
