Packers sign G Lane Taylor

March 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Packers logoLane Taylor started two games and played in a total of six last season, but the Green Bay Packers still felt he showed enough to sign him to a two-year contract.

Taylor signed a two-year deal for a reported $4.15-million, including a $600,000 signing bonus, plus an incentive package that could add another $1-million.

Taylor started at right guard in Week 10 against Detroit, playing for starting guard T.J. Lang, who was inactive because of a shoulder injury.  Taylor started the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings at left guard for Josh Sitton, who moved over to left tackle.

Taylor was an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State.  He gives the Packers some insurance in case they lost either Lang or Sitton, whose contracts both expire after the upcoming season.

Taylor becomes the fourth player general manager Ted Thompson re-signed before the start of free agency, joining Mike Daniels, Letroy Guion and kicker Mason Crosby.

Rodgers pulls out of Pro Bowl game

January 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has pulled out of the NFL’s Pro Bowl game, citing an undisclosed injury on Wednesday.  Rodgers will be replaced by Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr.

Rodgers was on the Packers’ injury report with a right shoulder injury back in November but didn’t miss any playing time.

This was the fifth time that Rodgers was voted to the Pro Bowl, but he’s played in just two of the games, in 2009 and 2011.  He also pulled out of last year’s Pro Bowl after finishing the season with a torn calf muscle.

The Packers still have three players scheduled to play in the game: guard Josh Sitton, fullback John Kuhn and linebacker Clay Matthews.

Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff were also selected to coach one of the two teams in the January 31st All-Star game in Hawaii.

Mike McCarthy

Mike McCarthy

The Green Bay Packers fired running backs coach Sam Gash and tight ends coach Jerry Fontenot today.

Fontenot was a part of Mike McCarthy’s original staff and has been with the team for ten seasons.

Fontenot helped develop tight end Richard Rodgers who caught 58 passes this past season.

Gash joined the Packers as running backs coach in 2014 after spending 2008-12 with the Detroit Lions, where he also coached running backs.

His departure comes after running back Eddie Lacy finished [Read more…]

Bakhtiari expected to return for Packers tonight

January 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

David Bakhtiari

Left tackle David Bakhtiari, who missed three straight games with an ankle injury, is expected to return to the lineup for the Green Bay Packers when they face Arizona in the NFC Divisional Playoffs.

Bakhtiari sat out Friday’s practice, but was listed as probable on the Packers latest injury report.  In his absence, the Packers used Don Barclay, Josh Sitton and J.C. Tretter.  Tretter held his own in last week’s wildcard win at Washington.  Barclay and Sitton struggled previously.

Bakhtiari’s return means the Packers will have all five of their preferred starters in the lineup for the first time in weeks. [Read more…]

Packers wrap up the practice week today

January 9, 2016 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

The Green Bay Packers wrap up the practice week with a short workout today before heading east for Sunday’s wildcard playoff game against the Washington Redskins.

The Packers listed 18 players on their injury report on Friday.  Corner Sam Shields is listed as doubtful with a concussion.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari walked without a limp in the locker room on Friday but offered no comment when asked about his availability for Sunday’s game.  He is listed as questionable on the injury report.

If Bakhtiari can’t play, Mike McCarthy said earlier in the week that Josh Sitton would stay at left guard.  It would appear to leave J.C. Tretter to play left tackle as the most likely replacement.

Masthay sets franchise mark

Punter Tim Masthay finished the regular season with a punting net average of 40.2, which ranked 14th in the NFL, but set a Packers franchise record.

Masthay’s previous best ranking in net average was 17th in 2010.  His previous best net average was 39.0 in 2013.

Goode has surgery

Long snapper Brett Goode underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee on December 28.  His contract expires at the end of the season.  He will be an unrestricted free agent.

His replacement, rookie Rick Lovato, has a two-year minimum deal that runs through 2016.

Sitton named All-Pro

January 8, 2016 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton

Josh Sitton

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Josh Sitton may have struggled at left tackle last week, but he remains one of the top guards in all of professional football.

Sitton was named to the Associated Press All-Pro Second Team on Friday.  He was the only member of the Packers team selected to the squad.

Earlier this season, Sitton saw his streak of consecutive games without allowing a sack end at 37.  Prior to that, Sitton’s last sack allowed was in Week 17 of the 2012 season.

Sitton has allowed five sacks this season, but two of the five came while playing left tackle last week against the Vikings.  He hadn’t played left tackle previously since high school.

This is the third straight All-Pro second team honor for the Packers guard.

Packers have no answers, drop NFC North title game (AUDIO)

January 4, 2016 By Bill Scott

Playing for the NFC North Division title on Sunday night at Lambeau Field, Packers coach Mike McCarthy decided to shake things up on offense.  Unfortunately for the Green Bay Packers, the results were the same and the Minnesota Vikings came away with a 20-13 victory and their first NFC North title since 2009.

With David Bakhtiari sidelined for the second straight week with an ankle injury, McCarthy decided to move Pro Bowl left guard Josh Sitton out to left tackle, a position he hasn’t played since high school.  The Packers went with Lane Taylor at left guard in Sitton’s vacated spot.

McCarthy’s game plan was to run the ball.  He started the game using double-tight ends and either two backs and a single receiver or one back and two receivers. [Read more…]

Green Bay Packers fullback John Kuhn is apparently heading to his third Pro Bowl.  Oakland fullback Marcel Reece has been suspended for four games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drug policy and Kuhn is the first alternate at the fullback position.

Kuhn remains a steady blocker in the Packers’ offense, with eight carries this season for 25 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Kuhn is expected to join Aaron Rodgers, Josh Sitton and Clay Matthews at the Pro Bowl game on January 31st in Honolulu.

Packers have three players selected to Pro Bowl

December 23, 2015 By Bill Scott

Clay Matthews

Clay Matthews

The Green Bay Packers had just three players selected to the Pro Bowl this season.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers will make his fifth appearance, despite having his worst season statistically since his first year as a starter back in 2008.  His 95.2 passer rating ranks 12th in the NFL.

Guard Josh Sitton earned his third career Pro Bowl honor.  He is the first Packers guard to be named to consecutive Pro Bowls since Marco Rivera was selected to three straight from 2002 through 2004. [Read more…]

Montgomery sidelined again

December 18, 2015 By Bill Scott

Ty Montgomery

Ty Montgomery

Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver Ty Montgomery worked Wednesday but stood on the sidelines on Thursday as the Packers prepared for Sunday’s game against the Raiders in Oakland.

Montomery appears to have re-aggravated his high ankle sprain with the recovery now at two months and growing with his chances of playing Sunday up in the air.

The Packers third-round draft pick out of Stanford got off to a good start, both as a receiver and a kick returner, but an ankle injury on October 18th against the San [Read more…]
