Wisconsin track & field standout Kelsey Card finished third in the discus at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team trials to earn a spot on Team USA for the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio next month.

Card’s best throw came on her first attempt of the day, as she  threw the discus 197 feet, 3 inches to grab one of the three spots on the U.S. team that’s heading to Rio de Jainero in August.

Card became the seventh athlete in Wisconsin program history to earn a spot in the Olympics.  She also becomes the first UW athlete to compete in a field event at the Olympics.

Card will compete in the discus at the 2016 Summer Olympics on Monday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

Wisconsin men’s track and field senior Zach Ziemek finished third in the decathlon at the U.S. Olympic track & field trials Sunday in Eugene, Oregon.

Ziemek broke his own Badgers and Big Ten record after tallying 8,413 points.  Ziemek is the 17th athlete in UW men’s track and field history to compete at the Summer Olympics.

Wisconsin senior Kelsey Card threw 202 feet, 4 inches to finish third in the hammer throw on Friday, becoming the first collegian in history to surpass 2oo feet in both the discus and hammer and top 60 feet in the shot put.

On Saturday, Card broke her own Big Ten meet record in the shot put with a toss of 59-9 1/2 to claim her sixth conference title.

Card continued her winning ways on Sunday, claiming the Big Ten Conference crown in the discus with a league-record throw of 204-2.

The throw makes Card the No. 10 performer in NCAA history in the discus, a week after she entered the all-time top 10 in the shot put.

Card scored 26 of UW’s 55.5 points on the weekend, as the Badgers finished in eighth in the team standings.  Michigan and Minnesota shared the team title with 106 points.

The Badgers will find out how many athletes they qualify for the 2016 NCAA West Preliminary Round later this week.
