Packers bringing Lewis back for another season

March 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

Marcedes Lewis caught only three passes for 39 yards in 16 games last season, but the Green Bay Packers thought enough about his blocking that they decided to bring him back for another season.

Lewis was only targeted four times, catching three of them.

Lewis is familiar with new Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.  Hackett called plays for two seasons in Jacksonville in 2016 and 2017 and Lewis caught 44 passes for 487 yards and six touchdowns during that time.

Restricted free agent wide receiver Geronimo Allison will also return in 2019 after the Packers tendered him the original-round offer of $2.025 million.  Other teams can offer a contract to Allison, but the Packers would have the opportunity to match it.  If they don’t, they would not be compensated for the loss.

Allison finished last season on injured reserve after recovering from a torn abductor muscle.

The Packers elected not to tender a contract offer to free agent safety Kentrell Brice and neglected to make an offer to free agent Bashaud Breeland.

Packers health changes in one weekend

November 6, 2018 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga hopes to be ready by Sunday.

A week ago, the Green Bay Packers had all 53 players on their roster available to face the Los Angeles Rams.  It’s as healthy as they’ve been during the middle of a season in recent memory.  That all changed after a trip to New England.

Wide receiver Geronimo Allison saw core injury specialist William Meyers in Philadelphia and could be facing surgery, which would force him to miss at least 3-4 weeks.

Defensive back Kevin King suffered a hamstring injury against the Patriots.  Coach Mike McCarthy said King will be “hard pressed” to play Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

Linebacker Blake Martinez and safety Kentrell Brice are both dealing with ankle sprains and right tackle Bryan Bulaga is dealing with a knee injury.  The Packers feel Bulaga dodged anything series and will be given the week to determine his playing status for Sunday.

Packers add safety

The Packers claimed safety Ibraheim Campbell off waivers from the New York Jets on Monday.

The Cleveland Browns drafted Campbell out of Northwestern in the fourth round of the 2015 draft.  He played under Mike Pettine with the Browns and wound up starting 11 games over three seasons.  After being cut by the Browns in 2017, Campbell spent time with Houston, Dallas and the New York Jets.

Packers fall to 0-4 on the road with loss to Patriots

November 5, 2018 By Bill Scott

The game was closer than the final score, but the New England Patriots scored 14-straight points in the fourth quarter to knock off the Green Bay Packers 31-17 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro on Sunday night.

With the game tied 17-17 and the Packers driving, Aaron Jones fumbled the ball away.  The Patriots went on to pull out the win.

The Patriots, who won their sixth straight game, used the trick play to outfox the Packers.  The Packers defense played well enough to win for the most part, but they had no answer for a pair of trick plays.

New England used a first half fleaflicker to set up a field goal.  Then in the fourth quarter, a reverse pass throwback from Julian Edleman to running back James White gained 37 yards, giving the Patriots the ball first and goal at the two.

The Patriots doubled Packers wide receiver Davante Adams much of the night.  Adams caught six passes for 40 yards and a touchdown. [Read more…]

Packers deal Montgomery & Clinton-Dix before the trade deadline

October 30, 2018 By Bill Scott

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix

Twenty Four hours ago, Green Bay Packers running back Ty Montgomery said he had a hard time trusting his teammates and he wasn’t sure what his role was on the team.  Fast forward one day and Montgomery was sent to the Baltimore Ravens for a 7th round draft pick in 2020.

Montgomery fumbled a kick return after being told not to bring the football out of the end zone.  Criticism quickly followed from Montgomery’s teammates and the Packers returner said its hard to trust anyone now.

Montgomery was selected in the third round out of Stanford in 2015.  In 36 career games, he caught 129 passes for 827 yards and three touchdowns.  He has rushed for 849 yards and seven touchdowns.

Montgomery will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.  His departure means the Packers no longer have a single player from that 2015 draft class on the active roster.  Linebacker Jake Ryan is the only member of that class still a part of the organization, but he’s on injured reserve. Packers have a tough day on Monday (AUDIO)

July 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jake Ryan

Less than a week into training camp, the Green Bay Packers have already suffered what appears to be at least their first major injury.

Linebacker Jake Ryan went down during an 11-on-11 drill, grabbing his knee in pain.

Blake Martinez spoke with Ryan right after practice and said the linebacker was devastated.

The Packers didn’t release any information on Ryan’s injury.  He’ll undergo an MRI today, to determine the seriousness of the injury and just how long he’ll be out.

Next up behind Ryan is rookie Oren Burks, who has played all of the positions in the first week of training camp.

Safety Kentrell Brice also was carted off with a leg injury and defensive end Mike Daniels left with early but said he’ll be OK.

The Packers will return to the practice field on Tuesday.

Packers announce roster moves, Biegel set to make debut

November 3, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made a series of roster moves on Friday, starting with the activation of linebacker Vince Biegel from reserve/physically unable to perform.  In addition, they signed long snapper Derek Hart to the active roster.

The Packers also signed cornerback Donatello Brown to the active roster from the practice squad, signed TE Emanuel Byrd to the practice squad and placed safety Kentrell Brice and long snapper Taybor Pepper on injured reserve.

Biegel’s activation paves the way for the former Badger to make his NFL debut on Monday night when the Packers face the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field.

Burnett ruled out of Packers lineup on Sunday

October 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers will play Sunday’s divisional matchup at Minnesota without starting safety Morgan Burnett.

Burnett suffered a hamstring injury in last week’s win over the Dallas Cowboys and was ruled out on the teams final injury report on Friday.  He’s joined by linebacker Joe Thomas, who is dealing with an ankle injury.

The Packers are expected to turn to Kentrell Brice and rookie Josh Jones to take Burnett’s place in Dom Capers defense.

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix will take over the communication helmet normally worn by Burnett.

It is also possible the Packers could be without rookie corner Kevin King (concussion).  Veteran Davon House is also listed as questionable with the quadriceps injury that has seen him miss two games already this season.  King and linebacker Ahmad Brooks (back) are both listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game.

The Vikings will be without their top receiver Stefon Diggs (groin), quarterback Sam Bradford (knee) and starting guard Nick Easton (calf).

Packers open preseason with win over the Eagles

August 11, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley (file photo)

After a sluggish start for the offense, Brett Hundley hit wide receiver Jeff Janis for a 20-yard touchdown and the Green Bay Packers went on to knock off the Philadelphia Eagles 24-9 at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

The score was part of 17 unanswered points in the second quarter.  Trevor Davis also took one of his two punt returns back 68 yards for a touchdown, which likely put him in the driver’s seat for the punt return job this season.

A sprained ankle wiped out Hundley’s preseason a year ago, so his start against the Eagles was his first significant playing time since his rookie season two years ago.

Hundley finished 8 of 15 for 90 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Mason Crosby also booted a 39-yard field goal to send the Packers into the locker room at halftime with a 17-6 lead.

Third-string quarterback Joe Callahan entered in the third quarter and completed 10 of 16 passes for 103 yards.  Rookie Taysom Hill came on late and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Michael Clark with nine seconds left to play. [Read more…]
