Home run ball leads Brewers to comeback win (AUDIO)

August 17, 2017 By Bill Scott

Keon Broxton celebrates one of his two home runs.

The Milwaukee Brewers clubbed five home runs to come-from-behind and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-6 at Miller Park on Thursday.

All seven runs came via the home run.  Centerfielder Keon Broxton clubbed two of the five home runs, giving him 19 for the season.  Neil Walker and Travis Shaw also went yard.  Manny Pina added the biggest of them all in the eighth.  After the Brewers fell behind in the top half of the inning, Pina clubbed a 2-run, opposite field homer to put the Brewers back in front and eventually pull out the win.

The Brewers fell behind 4-0 with Jimmy Nelson struggling early.  But Broxton and Walker clubbed home runs in the bottom half to make it a 4-3 game and the Brewers were right back in it.

Travis Shaw’s 26th home run of the season in the sixth inning pulled the Brewers back to even at 4-4.

The Pirates went up 5-4 in the seventh, but Broxton’s second home run of the game tied the game 5-5. [Read more…]

Brewers hold off Pirates for 3-1 win

August 16, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers held off Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, pulling out a 3-1 win over the Pirates in their series opener at Miller Park.

Zach Davies kept the Pirates off balance, allowing a run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn his 14th victory (14-6) of the season.  It was a good bounce back win for Davies, who struggled in his last outing.

Manny Pina drove in a pair of runs for the Brewers and Keon Broxton clubbed a pinch hit home run in the 7th to close out the scoring between the two teams.

The Brewers went with a heavy left-handed hitting lineup against Pirates starter Ivan Nova.  Jonathan Villar, who is a switch hitter, started in center field.  Eric Sogard also started at shortstop after Orlando Arcia was a late scratch with back spasms.  [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped to 9-17 since the All-Star break, falling to the Minnesota Twins 7-2 on Thursday night at Miller Park.  The Twins swept the Brewers by winning two in Minneapolis and again taking two more in Milwaukee.  The Brewers have lost five straight and dropped into third place in the Central Division, behind the Chicago Cubs and the red hot Cardinals, who have won seven straight.

Zach Davies entered the game with a 0.94 earned run average in the last four games, allowing just three earned runs over a span of 28 2/3 innings.  Last night, He made it through 5 2/3 innings but allowed seven runs (six earned) on a career-high 11 hits and took the loss.

Keon Broxton clubbed his 16th home run of the season but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Brewers.

Minnesota shortstop Jorge Polanco entered the series hitting just .217.  In four games against the Brewers, Polanco went 10 for 15 with five rbi’s.

Brewers cough up late lead, fall to Twins (AUDIO)

August 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers took advantage of some sloppy play by the Minnesota Twins and took a 4-3 lead into the 7th inning at Target Field.  Unfortunately, the Brewers then got sloppy and coughed up the lead, falling 5-4 in their series opener.

In the seventh, Oliver Drake walked leadoff man Eduardo Escobar, who scored when Eddie Rosario’s deep line drive to right was misjudged by Domingo Santana as the tying run scored on Rosario’s double.  After Rosario was bunted to third, Drake balked in the go-ahead run and the Twins then held on for the victory.

Brewers starter Brent Suter was removed after just four innings, but lefty Josh Hader struggled with his command.  Hader walked three batters in the fifth and hit Jason Castro to lead off the sixth.

Keon Broxton drove in a pair of runs, with a long home run into the second deck in left field in the third and a run scoring double in the fourth. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers finally won a series from the St. Louis Cardinals, taking two of three with a 2-1 win at Miller Park on Thursday.  Prior to Thursday, the Cardinals had won 13 straight series at Miller Park dating to July 2012.

Matt Garza, who came off the disabled list after recovering from a lower leg strain, allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings to pick up the win.  Jacob Barnes, Anthony Swarzak and Corey Knebel, who notched his 20th save, finished up for the Brewers.

Garza allowed Greg Garcia’s RBI single in the fifth inning, one of only four hits he allowed on the day.  That tied the game 1-1, but the Brewers bounced back in the bottom half to retake the lead, collecting three straight two-out singles from Travis Shaw, Hernan Perez and Keon Broxton to put the Brewers on top for good.

Broxton also took away a home run in the second inning from Jose Martinez, leaping high over the wall in right center to snatch a would be  home run. [Read more…]

It’s June 16 and the Milwaukee Brewers are still in first place atop the National League Central.

Eric Thames broke a 4-4 tie in the ninth with a two-run home run with two outs to help the Brewers pull out a 6-4 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  After the Brewers lost the first game of a doubleheader on Monday, they won three straight, taking three of four in the series.

The Cardinals scored twice in the first inning off of Brewers starter Zach Davies, picking up five hits and sending Davies pitch count (34) up the charts from the beginning.  A pair of nice defensive plays by Keon Broxton and Eric Sogard prevented the Cardinals from doing more damage.

The Brewers got those two runs back in the second when Broxton clubbed a 489 foot home run, the longest home run in the new Busch Stadium, which opened in 2006.

The Brewers bullpen did the job, throwing four hitless and scoreless innings.  With Corey Knebel off limits, Oliver Drake pitched the ninth, striking out a pair and collecting his first save of the season.  [Read more…]

Brewers split twin bill with Cardinals (AUDIO)

June 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brent Suter – Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Milwaukee Brewers earned a split in their day-night doubleheader with the Cardinals in St. Louis on Tuesday.

The Brewers called up Brandon Woodruff from Class AAA Colorado Springs to make his Major League pitching debut, but had to call an audible when Woodruff had his right hamstring tighten up on him while stretching.  He was placed on the 10-day disabled list after the game and will be replaced on the roster by Paolo Espino, who was recalled from Colorado Springs.

Lefty Brent Suter was also called up from Colorado Springs on Tuesday to help give the bullpen some relief.  When Woodruff couldn’t make his start, the Brewers turned to Suter.

Suter pitched well enough to win, but the Brewers offense managed just six singles off of Cardinals starter Lance Lynn and a pair of relievers and were shutout 6-0 in the opener.  Suter allowed just one base-runner over the first three innings and one hit through four. [Read more…]

Junior Guerra pitched six strong shutout innings, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday night at Citi Field.  Guerra made his second start since returning from the disabled list with a calf strain.

It was the first win in the four game series for the Brewers, and just their third win in the last 10 games.

Guerra allowed four hits over six innings, walking three and striking out four while earning his first victory of the season.

Eric Thames, who is showing signs of breaking out of his month long slump, clubbed his 14th home run of the season.  Keon Broxton also went deep for the Brewers, who will try to salvage a split in the series with a victory this afternoon.

Chase Anderson (3-1, 3.72) faces Mets right hander Zack Wheeler (3-2, 3.83) in the pitching matchup.  First pitch is set for 12:10 p.m.

The Toronto Blue Jays clubbed four home runs, three off of Milwaukee starter Matt Garza, on the way to a 8-4 win over the Brewers at Miller Park.

The Blue Jays swept the two game series, sending the Brewers to their third straight defeat.  Milwaukee dropped to 25-21 with their lead over the Cardinals and Cubs atop the NL Central Division down to a half game.

Matt Garza set down the Blue Jays first nine hitters before the home runs came.  Leadoff hitter Kevin Pillar led off the fourth inning with a solo home run.  Two batters later, Jose Bautista homered off the scoreboard in center.

Toronto busted the game open in the sixth with two more home run.  Devon Travis led off the inning with a home run to center, the third of the game off of Garza.

Oliver Drake came on in relief, walking Chris Coghlan to lead the bases before serving up a grand slam to [Read more…]

Brewers perched at the top of NL Central

May 18, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers are supposed to be rebuilding.  Nobody knows how long this recent streak of success will last, but for now, the Brewers are at the top of the National League Central Division, looking down at the other four teams.

Jett Bandy’s ninth-inning RBI single was the highlight of a two-run rally and the Brewers beat the San Diego Padres 3-1 at Petco Park on Wednesday night.

The Brewers won for the eighth time in the last 10 games to climb five games over .500 at 23-18.  It’s the first time they’ve reached that mark since September of 2014.

Travis Shaw returned to the Brewers lineup after missing two games with a finger injury and immediately paid dividends by driving in Eric Sogard with a rbi single to center.  That would be it until the ninth inning for the Brewers offense. [Read more…]
