Wisconsin fires women’s basketball coach

After five seasons and 100 defeats, the Bobbie Kelsey era as women’s head basketball coach at Wisconsin has come to an end.

Kelsey compiled an overall record of 47-100 in her five seasons on the Badger bench, including a 19-65 mark in the Big Ten.

In a statement, Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said, “It ‘s my job and the sports administrator’s job to see the program’s progress and that they’re being run properly and that things are being done the right way.”

Phoenix women ousted in NCAA Tournament opener

The ninth-seeded Green Bay Phoenix women gave undefeated and eighth-seeded Princeton all it could handle in Saturday’s NCAA Women’s Tournament opener; however, the Tigers prevailed 80-70 in College Park, Maryland.

Green Bay seemingly had an answer for every Princeton run, but could not stop the Ivy League champions on the inside. The Tigers owned a 49-22 edge on the boards, including 17 offensive rebounds. It added up to 19-4 advantage on points in the paint.

Mehryn Kraker drained five 3-pointers and shot 8-of-16 en route to a game-high 21 points. Kaili Lukan added 17 points and Tesha Buck 14. Buck finished 1-of-9 from beyond the arc. [Read more…]

Green Bay draws unbeaten Princeton in NCAA tournament opener

Green Bay's NCAA DrawThe Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team got a double-dose of tough luck when the NCAA women’s tournament bracket was announced last night.

The Phoenix (28-4) was matched up against Princeton (30-0) in the Spokane Regional.  The teams will tip at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland.  The winner will likely face top-seeded Maryland in round 2.  Maryland opens up against No. 16 seed New Mexico State.

Princeton drew the 8-seed, after becoming the 15th team to enter the NCAA Tournament unbeaten.

Green Bay takes an 11 game winning streak into Saturday’s game, after capturing their 13th Horizon League Tournament title.  The Phoenix will be making their 15th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Green Bay women land spot in NCAA field

Tesha Buck scored 24 points and freshman Allie LeClaire added 17 as the Green Bay Phoenix women knocked off Wright State 86-77 in overtime, laying claim to the Horizon League Tournament championship.

Green Bay (28-4) improved to 13-4 all time in Horizon League Championship games.  They avenged a loss to the Raiders in last years Tournament Championship game.

Borseth claims 600th career win

The Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team cruised to a 87-45 victory on Thursday night, giving coach Kevin Borseth his 600th career victory.

Borseth became the 51st coach in NCAA women’s basketball history to reach 600 wins.

The victory leaves Green Bay (21-4, 11-1) one win shy of clinching its 17th-straight Horizon League regular season championship.  They’ll face Illinois-Chicago on Saturday at the Kress Center.

Tesha Buck continued to stay hot, scoring 16 points to lead five Green Bay players in double figures.  Ellen Edison tied her season high with 14 points.  She hit 4 of 6 from three-point range.  The Phoenix as a team hit 12 of 25 from beyond the arc.

Borseth seeks 600th career victory tonight (AUDIO)

Green Bay Phoenix women’s coach Kevin Borseth shoots for win number-600 in his career, as his Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team hosts Valparaiso on Thursday night at the Kress Center.

Green Bay (20-4, 10-1 Horizon League) is enjoying a three-game winning streak following its first conference setback of the season.  Following a 79-62 win over in-state rival UW-Milwaukee, the Phoenix holds a two-game lead in the Horizon League, plus they own the tie-breaker over Wright State, having swept the two-game regular season series over the Raiders.

Borseth is the all-time winningest coach in Horizon League history with 164 career wins.  That’s eight more wins than former Milwaukee Panthers coach Sandy Botham, who totalled 156 victories.  Butler’s Beth Couture tallied 99 victories. [Read more…]

Green Bay cracks women’s top 25

With a 9-2 record and a 4-game winning streak, the Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team has cracked the Associated Press top 25 college basketball poll for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

Green Bay has tallied wins this season against Wisconsin, Purdue, Arizona State, Georgia Tech and Marquette.  They also have wins over Duquesne and South Dakota State, both having made postseason appearances a season ago.

Green Bay received 84 votes in the poll, 48 points more tan 25th-ranked Arizona State.  Green Bay trailed No. 23 Iowa by 15 votes and No. 22 Syracuse by 25 votes.  The Phoenix is the only mid-major program ranked in the top 25.

UWGB routs Titans in exhibition

Mehryn Kraker scored 15 points to lead the UW-Green Bay Phoenix women’s basketball team to a 61-34 win over UW-Oshkosh in the final exhibition tune-up prior to the start of the regular season.

Kraker hit 7 of 9 from the field and pulled down 6 rebounds in the win.

Sam Terry added 12 points for the Phoenix.Taylor Schmidt, Eliza Campbell and Alex Richard each scored six points for the Titans.

The Phoenix now get ready for their regular season opener, Nov. 15 at Marquette.

Borseth signs contract extension at Green Bay

Last season, Borseth led the Phoenix to its 16th-consecutive Horizon League regular season title after going 13-3 in conference action.  The team advanced to the WNIT and finished the season with an overall record of 22-10 for its 15th-straight 20-plus win season and 10th under his command in addition to its 37th-straight winning season.

Borseth owns a career coaching record of 579-245, leaving him 21 wins away from No. 600.  He has coached a total of 27 years, including 11 years for Green Bay where he has amassed an impressive record of 267-75.  He ranks 32nd all-time in NCAA women’s basketball coaching victories.

Borseth has garnered Horizon League Coach of the Year honors in eight of his 11 seasons at Green Bay.  Borseth will coach the youngest team in the Horizon League this season in hopes of winning its 17th-straight regular season championship.

Barnes takes head womens job at Youngstown State

Former Green Bay women’s basketball associate head coach John Barnes has been hired as the head coach at Youngstown State.  Barnes becomes the seventh head coach of a Penguins’ program that finished second in the Horizon League last season before advancing to the second round of the 2013 WNIT Tournament.

Barnes, a four-year basketball player and 1995 graduate of Michigan Tech University started his coaching career at his alma mater in 2003 as the head coach of the women’s basketball team.  From 2003-10, he led the Huskies to a 156-55 record with five appearances in the NCAA Division II Championships.  He was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times and his program never had a losing season.

He served as an assistant at Wisconsin during the 2010-11 season before assuming the same position at Michigan under Kevin Borseth for the 2011-12 campaign.

Barnes replaces Horizon League Coach of the Year Bob Boldon who accepted the same position at the University of Ohio in March.
