Woeful offensive showing ends Badgers season

March 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin’s offensive struggles in the latter portion of the season was a concern going into Friday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Oregon and those concerns turned out to be valid.

The Badgers shot just 20 percent from three-point range (6 of 30) and 33.3 percent overall (20 of 60), falling to the Ducks 72-54, seeing their season come to an end.

The loss was an embarrassment for the Badgers, who were tied with the Ducks, 25-25 at halftime.

Ethan Happ finished with 12 points and eight rebounds but turned it over five times.

Khalil Iverson, who has played well down the stretch, was the most effective Badger player in the loss, finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.

Brad Davison missed all seven of his three-point attempts.  D’Mitrik Trice made just 2 of 10 from distance while Brevin Pritzl went 0 for 3 and Kobe King and Aleem Ford missed both of their attempts.

The Ducks (24-12) ran their win streak to nine games.  Point guard Payton Pritchard finished with 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

The Badgers have struggled to score down the stretch and it was just a matter of time before the poor shooting would catch up with them.

The Badgers saw their season come to an end at 23-11.  They lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 when they were eliminated by 12th seeded Ole Miss 57-45, in Kansas City.

Khalil Iverson

The 21st ranked Wisconsin Badgers blew a 23-point second half lead and needed overtime to knock off the Ohio State Buckeyes 73-67 in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday.

Ohio State (18-13, 8-12 Big Ten) outscored the Badgers (22-9, 14-6) 27-5 over the last seven minutes of regulation.

Khalil Iverson had a career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Badgers.  He hit 10 of 14 shots from the field.  Ethan Happ added 16 points 14 rebounds and 8 assists to allow the Badgers to lock up the fourth spot in the Big Ten and secure a double-bye in this week’s Big Ten Tournament.

Senior C.J. Jackson led the Buckeyes with 22 points.  Ohio State, which played its third straight game without top scorer and rebounder Kaleb Wesson, missed their first 13 shots to start the game and trailed 26-16 at halftime.

Badger seniors with a happy farewell

March 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

After playing close game after close game, the Wisconsin Badgers cruised to a convincing 65-45 senior night victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.  The win moved the Badgers to within one victory of securing fourth place in the Big Ten and a double-bye heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

Senior Ethan Happ had 21 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to help the Badgers sweep the Hawkeyes in the season series.  It marked the 9th time that Happ has scored at least 20 points and collected at least 10 rebounds in a game, the most by a Big Ten player and the second most of any player in the country.

The Badgers (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten) moved one full game in front of fifth-place Maryland (21-9, 12-7).  The Terrapins host Minnesota in their final Big Ten contest on Friday night, while the Badgers close out at Ohio State on Sunday. [Read more…]

Badgers miss chances on the road, fall in OT

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between the Badgers and Hoosiers in Bloomington was like a trip to the dentist.  It was painful to watch and seemed at times like nobody really wanted the win.

But when the dust settled, it was the Hoosiers that ended their five-game losing streak, knocking off the Badgers 75-73 in double overtime.

Freshman Romeo Langford’s driving layup in the final second gave the Hoosiers the victory, just their second since January 3rd.

Langford’s game winner came after D’Mitrik Trice hit three free throws with 9.6 seconds left to tie the game 73-73.

The Badgers (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) hit just 13 of 25 free throws, including just 5 of 11 in the second overtime.  They missed a chance to tie Maryland (21-7, 12-5) for fourth place in the Big Ten.  Instead, they’re a full game back with three to play.

Maryland faces Penn State on Wednesday night.  The Nittany Lions are in Madison to face the Badgers on Saturday. [Read more…]

Badgers win grudge match against Illinois

February 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

The Wisconsin Badgers (18-8, 10-5 Big Ten) snapped their two-game losing streak by coming from behind to beat Illinois 64-58 at the Kohl Center on Monday night.

Brad Davison had 18 points and seven rebounds and Khalil Iverson added a career high 16 points with nine rebounds to lead the Badgers.

Wisconsin shot just 32.1% from the field in the first half, yet trailed the Illini by just one point at halftime.  They converted 48.1% from the field in the second half to come from behind for the win.

Illinois (10-16, 6-9) saw its winning streak end at four games.  Wisconsin also extended its winning streak against the Illini to 15 games.  Wisconsin’s last defeat at the hands of the Illini took place on January 2, 2011.

The Badgers won the first meeting against Illinois last month, 72-60 in Champaign.  In that game, Khalil Iverson had 12 points and seven rebounds. [Read more…]

Reuvers to the rescue for the Badgers

January 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

It was another sloppy night of basketball for the Wisconsin Badgers on Wednesday night in Champaign, Ill., but in the end, Bucky found a way to persevere, 72-60 over Illinois.

The Badgers (13-6, 5-3 Big Ten) extended their winning streak against the Illini (5-14, 1-7) to 14 games, including seven straight in Champaign.  The last Illinois victory over the Badgers came in the 2010-’11 season, a 69-61 win in Champaign.

With senior forward Ethan Happ in foul trouble most of the night, sophomore Nate Reuvers came to the rescue with a collegiate high 22 points.  He added 10 rebounds as well, as the Badgers broke open a close game in the final minutes. [Read more…]

Davison leads Badgers past Savannah State

December 14, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers scored a program record 69 points in the first half and went on to beat Savannah State 101-60 on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.

Sophomore guard Brad Davison pulled out of his season long shooting slump by hitting 6 of 9 three-pointers on the way to a 24 point night.  Davison hit 8 of 11 shots overall and added five assists, four rebounds and four steals.

The 19th ranked Badgers broke the 100-point mark for the first time since Nov. 19, 2013, when Frank Kaminsky scored a program record 43 points in a 103-85 win over North Dakota.

The Badgers finished 11 of 16 from three-point range (68.8%), 37 of 66 overall (56.1 %), hit 11 of 14 free throws (78.6%) and committed just 10 turnovers.

Ethan Happ added a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.  Happ hit 4 of his 5 free throw attempts.

Freshman guard Tai Strickland hit 3 of 4 three-pointers and finished with a career high 14 points and six assists.

The Badgers played without senior Khalil Iverson.  He was in a walking boot with a foot injury.

The Badgers improved to 9-2, while the Tigers dropped their 5th in-a-row and dropped to 3-9.

Badgers fall short against Michigan State, season is over

March 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Coach Greg Gard

The Wisconsin Badgers gave Michigan State all they could handle, but in the end, UW fell to the Spartans 63-60 in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

Unlike Thursday, when the Badgers beat Maryland on the boards and at the free throw line, Wisconsin lost both of those battles to Michigan State on Friday.

The Badgers were out-rebounded 41-27 and 16-10 on the offensive end.  Michigan State only shot 11 free throws, but they made 10 of them.  The Badgers attempted just six free throws and made only two.

The three-point loss guaranteed UW’s NCAA Tournament streak of 19 is over.  For 19 straight seasons, Wisconsin called the NCAA tournament their postseason home, but not this year.

The loss for Wisconsin (15-18) is also the third straight this season against Big Ten regular season champion Michigan State.

Michigan State (29-3) advances to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament against cross-state rival Michigan.  The Wolverines (26-7) knocked off Nebraska 77-58 in the tournaments second quarterfinal game.

Ethan Happ hit 10 of 15 from the field and led the Badgers with 22 points.  Brad Davison, who poured in 30 points in last Sunday’s loss to the Spartans in Madison, finished with 10 points, as did Khalil Iverson. [Read more…]

Badgers live to play another day (AUDIO)

March 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

The Wisconsin Badgers made all the right plays down the stretch to knock off the Maryland Terrapins 59-54 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Wisconsin (15-17) moves on to face top-seeded Michigan State (28-3) in the quarterfinals on Friday morning at 11 a.m.

The Spartans won both games against the Badgers during the regular season, 76-61 in East Lansing and 68-63 in Madison last Sunday.

The Badgers out-rebounded Maryland (19-13) 59-54 and hit 20 of 24 free throws (83.3%).  The Terrapins shot 88.9% from the free throw line but got just nine attempts, making eight of them.

Ethan Happ led four Badgers in double figures with 14 points.  He hit 6 of 7 free throws to help the Badgers improve to 15-17 on the season.

Wisconsin shot just 36% from the field for the game and hit just 3 of 18 (16.7%) from three-point range.  But when it counted, the Badgers made the plays. [Read more…]

Badgers extend win streak to three

February 23, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers extended their Big Ten win streak to three, knocking off Northwestern 70-64 Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois.

Ethan Happ led four Badgers in double figures with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, three blocks and four steals.  Fifteen of his 19 points came in the second half.

Junior forward Khalil Iverson added 16 points and 6 rebounds, but the surprise in the group came from big man Andy Van Vliet, who scored 14 points in the win.

Van Vliet entered the night having played just 14 minutes in four Big Ten games and a total of 94 minutes in 13 games overall.  Thursday night, Van Vliet hit 4 of 6 from three-point range as Coach Greg Gard attempted to pull Northwestern out of its zone defense.  The plan worked as the Wildcats picked up the Badgers in man-to-man in the second half.

Wisconsin hit just 7 of 26 three-pointers in the teams’ first meeting in Madison.  The Wildcats jumped out to an 18-1 lead and beat UW  60-52.  The Badgers adjusted and returned the favor Thursday night.

Sophomore guard Brevin Pritzl added 11 points and hit a crucial three pointer to give the Badgers a 68-64 lead with 27 seconds left to play. [Read more…]
