Marquette drops Big East road game at Providence

January 28, 2021 By Bill Scott

This was supposed to be a stretch of games on Marquette’s games where they had a chance to pad their record, but the Golden Eagles have dropped a pair of winnable games to drop back to .500.

After a home loss to DePaul (68-61) on Saturday, the Golden Eagles started slow Wednesday night and fell to Providence 72-63 in overtime in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Friars (9-7, 5-5 Big East) avenged a 79-69 loss to the Golden Eagles on Jan. 12 at Fiserv Forum.

Marquette (8-8, 4-6 Big East) struggled out of the gates and scored just 18 points in the first half, trailing 25-18 at the break.  Marquette had more turnovers (nine) in the first half than they did field goals (eight).  The Golden Eagles shot just 34.8% (8 of 23) from the field in the first half.

The second half was better for the Golden Eagles, who hit their first four shots from the field and took a 36-35 lead with just over 12-minutes left in regulation.

Koby McEwen had 13 points to lead Marquette, but he spent most of the second half in foul trouble.  D.J. Carton and Justin Lewis added 12 points each.

Marquette returns home to host St. John’s in Big East action on Sunday afternoon.

Koby McEwen made a layup with 27 seconds left and Theo John had a big block in the closing seconds to league the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 73-71 win over St. John’s in Big East action on Saturday.

After McEwen’s drive down the left side of the lane, John swatted Vince Cole’s drive.  The Red Storm got the ball back but a desperation 3 at the buzzer was off the mark.

D.J. Carton had 14 points to lead the Golden Eagles (8-6, 4-4 Big East Conference).  Greg Elliott and Justin Lewis added 13 points and freshman Dawson Garcia added 11 points.

Julian Champagnie had 20 points for the Red Storm (7-7, 2-6).

The Golden Eagles held off the Red Storm for their first win at Carnesecca since 2015-16.

Marquette Falls To Xavier At The Buzzer

December 21, 2020 By Bill Scott

Dawson Garcia

The Marquette Golden Eagles continue to point to defense, or the lack there of it, for their latest setback.

Xavier hit 18 of 26 (69.2%) in the second half, including 7 of 10 from three point range to pull out a 91-88 buzzer beating win over the Golden Eagles on Sunday.  The Xavier improved to 8-0 overall, 1-0 in the Big East with the win.

Marquette (5-4, 1-2 Big East) got a four-point play with 25 seconds left and it looked like the game was headed for overtime, but the Golden Eagles couldn’t get a rebound and the Musketeers Adam Kunkel drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to win it.

The Golden Eagles have now lost back-to-back Big East games after opening league play with a win at then, No. 9 Creighton on Monday.

Marquette didn’t have an answer for Xavier guard Paul Scruggs, who scored 29 points on 11 of 19 shooting.  He hit 5 of 8 three-pointers.

Dawson Garcia and Koby McEwen had 20 points each to lead the Golden Eagles, who shot 55.2% (32-58) from the field for the game.  Marquette made 8 of 18 (44.4%) from three point range and 16-17 (94.1%) from the free throw line.

The Golden Eagles return home to host Villanova on Wednesday at Fiserv Forum.

The Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-0 Big East) came from 12-points down to beat the Blue Jays (4-2, 0-1).

Mitch Ballock hit 8 of his 13 three-pointers and scored a season-high 26 points to lead Creighton.  Denzel Mahoney added 21 points.

The Blue Jays ran off nine straight points to get to 76-75 but Carton hit a three and Dawson Garcia added a jumper and a put back basket to make it 83-75.

Creighton would again cut the Marquette lead to three and Carton missed a free throw but the Golden Eagles kept possession on a tie-up under the basket.  Koby McEwen then made a pair of free throws for an 85-80 lead with 30 seconds left.

Creighton didn’t do themselves any favors at the free throw line, hitting just 11 of 22 in the second half and finished 14 of 25 (56%) for the game.  Marquette held Creighton to 44% shooting from the field in the second half and outscored the Blue Jays 54-40 in the second half.

Marquette’s All-American senior guard Markus Howard poured in 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting in the first half, but the Wisconsin Badgers made life much tougher on Howard in the second half and pulled out a 77-61 win over the Golden Eagles at the Kohl Center.

Howard missed all nine of his shots in the second half, making only a pair of free throws.

“Honestly, it was a team effort,” Badger guard D’Mitrik Trice said.  “We know he’s a great, great scorer.  He’s one of the best in college basketball, so we knew it was going to take all of us to lock him up on defense.  We knew it would lead to offense.”

Trice finished with 10 points, one of six Badgers scoring in double figures.  Brevin Pritzl led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Brad Davison also had 15 points in the win.  Aleem Ford added 12 points. [Read more…]
