Morrison blast leads Gold past Blue at Miller Park

July 17, 2020 By Bill Scott

Logan Morrison

The Gold team is off to a 3-0 start in the Milwaukee Brewers Blue & Gold World Series at Miller Park.

The Gold earned a 4-1 victory on Thursday night, thanks to the first inning three-run home run off the bat of Logan Morrison.

Morrison is a non-roster invitee to camp and is making a strong bid to make the Brewers 30-man roster that will open the season next Friday in Chicago against the Cubs.  Currently, the Brewers 40-man roster is full and they would have to cut a player to make room.  But Morrison had a good spring and has picked up in this summer camp, where he left off.  Not to mention, he would give the Brewers another left-handed power bat.

Morrison’s blast came off of Wily Peralta, who eventually settled down, allowing no more runs in 3 2/3 innings of work.  Peralta allowed four hits in all with no walks while striking out one.

Right-hander Josh Lindblom allowed a run on four hits over five innings to earn the win for the Gold team.  Devin Williams and Justin Grimm also turned in solid relief efforts in the game. [Read more…]

Quintana continues his dominance of Milwaukee

September 12, 2018 By Bill Scott

Jose Quintana’s dominance of the Milwaukee Brewers continued on Tuesday night when he blanked the Brewers for six-plus innings on three hits in a 3-0 Cubs victory.

In nine attempts since Quintana came to the Cubs in the middle of last season, the Brewers have managed to win just once, a 7-0 win back on Aug. 14 at Wrigley Field.  Take that game away and Quintana is 7-0 with a 0.81 earned run average in the other eight outings.

What’s puzzling for the Brewers is that Quintana has a 4.54 ERA for the season.  He earned his 13th win overall.

Victor Caratini had a RBI single in the second and a run scoring double in the 7th as the Cubs extended their lead over the Brewers to two games in the National League Central. [Read more…]

Kyle Hendricks and two Chicago relievers combined to help the Cubs blank the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 at Wrigley Field on Thursday night.

In winning the opening game of the series, the Cubs have taken four of five from the Brewers so far this season, with three of the four wins coming via the shutout.

Hendricks tossed seven shutout innings and struck out five on his way to a 2-1 record.  Kyle Schwarber’s solo homer in the sixth off of Chase Anderson was the only offense Chicago would need.  It was Schwarber’s seventh home run of the season.

The Brewers managed just four hits on the night, all coming against Hendricks and all with two outs.

Anderson (2-2) allowed five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in seven innings.

The Brewers fell percentage points behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central Division standings, while the Cubs are two games back.

Game two of the series is Friday afternoon.  Brent Suter (1-2, 5.68) pitches for the Brewers.  Yu Darvish (0-2, 6.86) goes for the Cubs.  First pitch at Wrigley Field is set for 1:20 p.m.

Cubs blank Brewers behind rookie Hendricks

August 13, 2014 By Bill Scott

Wily Peralta is 6-0 against the rest of the National League Central Division.  But against the Chicago Cubs, he dropped to 0-3 with a 5.68 ERA after the Cubs blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 3-0 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

Peralta (14-7) saw his five-game overall win streak come to an end.  He allowed three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.  Peralta was 10-1 in his previous 12 games entering last nights game as he lost in his bid to become baseballs first 15-game winner.

The Brewers couldn’t figure out Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks, who allowed six hits in 7 1/3 innings to win his third straight game.  Hendricks improved to 4-1 with a 1.01 ERA in five starts since he got a no-decision in his debut at Cincinnati on July 10.

The Brewers had Hendricks on the ropes in the 8th inning.  They loaded the bases with one out but Pedro Strop came on to get Jonathan Lucroy to bounce into an inning ending double play.

Anthony Rizzo hit his 26th homer for the Cubs.  Arismendy Alcantara had two hits and drove in a run.

The Brewers saw their lead in the NL Central drop to 1 1/2 games over the Pittsburgh Pirates and 3-games over the St. Louis Cardinals.
