June 11, 2015 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers attempt to pick up their first sweep of the season fell short on Wednesday night.  Pittsburgh’s Charlie Morton worked 7 1/3 innings, allowing just three hits in a 2-0 Pirate victory over the Brewers at PNC Park.

The Brewers still took 2 of 3 from the Pirates and finished their 9-game road trip with a 5-4 record.

Kyle Lohse allowed 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings, but battled to keep his team in it.  Lohse gets credit for a quality start, but still fell to 3-7 with a 6.27 ERA.

Pedro Alvarez clubbed a solo home run in the second inning for the Pirates.

The Brewers return home to host Washington in the first of a four game series tonight.  Matt Garza (4-7, 5.09 ERA) pitches for the Brewers.  Tanner Roark (2-2, 3.16 ERA) goes for the Nationals.

Adam Lind went 3 for 5 with a three-run homer and drove in six runs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-5 win over the Minnesota Twins in their series opener at Target Field.

Lind’s double put the Brewers ahead to stay in the 8th inning and his single in the ninth provided some insurance.

The Brewers jumped out to a 5-0 lead through four innings, but the Twins rallied with five runs in the fifth off of starter Kyle Lohse.  Lohse had scattered just two singles over the first four innings.

The San Francisco Giants scored seven runs in the sixth inning and rebounded from a 4-1 deficit to knock off the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 in their series opener at Miller Park on Monday afternoon.

The Brewers got a pair of solo home runs from Khris Davis and a 2-run blast by Ryan Braun in the 5th to jump out early on the Giants.

Kyle Lohse struck out Angel Pagan to open the sixth inning before the Giants went on a tear.  Four Brewer pitchers gave up seven runs on seven hits with a pair of walks.  Lohse wound up taking the loss, falling to 3-5.

Khris Davis started the scoring for the Brewers when he homered to right.  But before Giants starter Tim Lincecum threw his next pitch, the Giants felt Davis didn’t touch home plate and appealed.  The home plate umpire agreed and ruled Davis out.  That forced Brewers skipper Craig Counsell to use a review which went the Brewers way. With a chance to secure their first series sweep of the season, the Milwaukee Brewers fought to stay with the Tigers before the bullpen faltered in a 5-2 loss Wednesday night at Comerica Park.

Tied at two in the eighth, Jonathan Broxton entered the game and promptly retired the first two batters he faced. Then he allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases, which were ultimately cleared on a Nick Castellanos triple that skipped past right fielder Gerardo Parra.

Milwaukee rallied twice to tie the game. Ryan Braun’s solo home run the fourth evened the game at one. Elian Herrera’s RBI double plated Khris Davis to knot the game at two in the seventh.  [Read more…]

Ryan Braun clubbed two home runs and made a diving catch in right field to help Kyle Lohse and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 7-0 at Citi Field in their series opener on Friday night.

The home runs for Braun are numbers 7 and 8 on the season.  Gerardo Parra also homered and clubbed an rbi double for the Brewers, who got to Mets starter Bartolo Colon (6-2) to win on the road for the first time under new manager Craig Counsell.

Lohse allowed just two hits in eight innings of work, after entering the game with a 7.03 ERA.  Lohse improved to 3-4 with the victory.  Michael Blazek completed the three-hitter by pitching the 9th inning for the Brewers.

The Brewers have now won 13 of their last 16 games at Citi Field to improve to 14-6 overall, good for the best winning percentage (.700) of any National League team.

Aramis Ramirez

There were five combined home runs, accounting for all six combined runs, between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark. Unfortunately for the Brewers, they were on the short end of both categories.

The Reds three homers were enough to chase Kyle Lohse and Milwaukee (4-17) in a 4-2 defeat, their second straight.

Lohse served up a solo home run to Joey Votto in the first inning, then back-to-back jacks in the fourth inning to Brandon Phillips and Marlon Byrd to put the Brewers in a 4-0 hole. The loss is his fourth in five starts this season and third consecutive.

The Brewers bats were held in check to the tune of three hits, though two were solo home runs. Aramis Ramirez and Ryan Braun each hit their second homer of the season. [Read more…]

Losing streak ends at eight for Brewers with 4-2 win vs. Reds

Wondering how and when a rough, eight-game losing stretch would end, the Milwaukee Brewers finally put a whole game together to defeat the Cincinnati Reds, 4-2, ending the skid and avoiding a four-game sweep.

Kyle Lohse (1-3) lasted seven innings while striking out four to pick up his first win in four starts this season. He allowed two runs on three hits.

Lohse did falter in the fifth inning trying to protect a 1-0 lead. The righthander served up a two-run homer to Marlon Byrd, handing the Reds a one run advantage.

It didn’t last long, though, as Aramis Ramirez answered with his first home run of the year, a solo blast to even the game at two. Then in the seventh, Milwaukee (3-13) took advantage of a leadoff walk to Logan Schafer as Jean Segura connected on a two-out RBI single to center to give the Brewers the lead for good. [Read more…]

There’s no question, pitchers are ahead of hitters after the first week of the Major League baseball season.  The Milwaukee Brewers, who were one of the top hitting teams during spring training, are going through their own issues as well.

In their just completed home stand, the Brewers scored a total of 16 runs in six games.  That’s an average of 2.7 per game.  The Brewers team batting average of .230 ranks 15th in the majors so far this season.

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Pirates had to scratch their starting pitcher, Francisco Liriano.  He left the Pirates after being placed on the teams paternity list.  His wife was about to give birth to a child in the Dominican Republic.  [Read more…]

Brewers open 2015 season today

April 6, 2015 By Bill Scott

Miller Park batting practiceThe Milwaukee Brewers open the season against the Colorado Rockies for the second time in the last three seasons.  We’ll soon see if the Brewers are the team that led the National League Central for five months last season, or the team that collapsed in the final month and fell out of playoff contention.

The Brewers themselves are banking on seeing the team that led the division for five months will resurface.  The number of offseason moves made by the Brewers was minimal.  They acquired first baseman Adam Lind from the Toronto Blue Jays and sent starter Yovani Gallardo to Texas to open a spot in the rotation for Jimmy Nelson.

The Brewers are banking on Ryan Braun’s thumb returning to form.  They’re hoping Aramis Ramirez can put together one more productive season. [Read more…]
