No fans for Wisconsin home basketball & hockey games

November 11, 2020 By Bill Scott

In an expected announcement, Wisconsin Athletics announced Wednesday that men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s hockey home games will be played this season without fans for an indefinite period of time.

Just like with football games at Camp Randall Stadium, fans will not be allowed into the Kohl Center for basketball or LaBahn Arena for hockey due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  UW had announced earlier in the fall that there would be no season tickets for basketball or hockey this season and season ticket holders have already been refunded or are in the process of being refunded.

The Badger men’s hockey team opens its season at Notre Dame this weekend before returning home to host Michigan on Nov. 19-20 at LaBahn Arena.  The top-ranked UW women’s hockey team begins its season with two series on the road (at Ohio State on Nov. 27-28 and at Minnesota on Dec. 4-5) before making its home debut against Minnesota-Duluth on Dec. 11-12.

The men’s and women’s basketball schedules will be released soon.

Badger women’s hockey team looking to fill the bowl again

September 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

The last time the Wisconsin women’s hockey team played at the Kohl Center, they drew 15,359 fans in a 2-0 win over St. Cloud State in 2017.  That turned out to be the largest crowd to watch an NCAA women’s hockey game.

The Badgers will try to equal that record performance when they host the Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday, Feb. 16 (2pm) at the Kohl Center.

It’s the final game of the 2019-20 regular season and it’ll be the sixth Fill the Bowl game as the Badgers raise money for local charity.

The Badgers made the Kohl Center their home from 1999 until they moved into LaBahn Arena in 2012.

No beneficiary has yet been announced.  Tickets for the game are expected to go on sale in October.

Abby Roque

Fresh off winning its fifth NCAA title, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team has been picked to win its eight WCHA regular-season title, according to the league’s annual preseason coaches’ poll that was announced Wednesday.

The Badgers earned 36 points and six first-place votes, while Minnesota earned 31 points and the other first place vote.  The two Border Battle rivals will rekindle their rivalry with a series on Nov. 2-3 in Minnesota and a series Jan. 24-25 in Madison.

Abby Roque was named the Preseason WCHA Player of the Year along with Ohio State forward Emma Maltais.  Roque, who was the league’s forward of the year in 2016-17, was second on the Badgers last year with a career-high 43 points.

The Badger forward was one of four Badgers named to the Preseason All-WCHA Preseason Team along [Read more…]
