Packers have tackle concerns

September 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

The Green Bay Packers are heading into Sunday’s showdown with the Atlanta Falcons with some health issues at offensive tackle.

Right tackle Bryan Bulaga, who missed the opener last week with a sprained right ankle, was sent home with an illness on Wednesday.  Not known is whether or not Bulaga would have practiced had he not been ill.  If Bulaga isn’t ready to play on Sunday, Kyle Murphy will make his second straight start in his place.

Starting left tackle David Bakhtiari was listed as a limited participant in practice because of a hamstring injury.  His backup on the left side, Jason Spriggs suffered a hamstring injury against Seattle and Mike McCarthy said Spriggs would miss at least a couple of weeks.

The Packers signed Adam Pankey from the practice squad this week to add some depth.

Gunter signs with Carolina

It didn’t take LaDarius Gunter long to find another team after the Packers released him on Tuesday.  Gunter was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers.

Gunter finished last season as the Packers top corner and led all corners in total snaps.

Gunter was active against Seattle but played just two snaps.

Packers make roster moves, prepare for Atlanta

September 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

La Darius Gunter – released by the Packers on Tuesday.

The Green Bay Packers released defensive back LaDarius Gunter on Tuesday, making room for wide receiver Geronimo Allison, who served his one-game suspension last week.

Gunter rescued the Packers last season when Sam Shields was lost early with a concussion.  But he struggled in the playoffs against two of the game’s top receivers, Dez Bryant (Dallas Cowboys) and Julio Jones (Atlanta Falcons).

The Packers have also reportedly released defensive lineman Ricky Jean Francois.  ESPN.com’s Rob Demovsky reported this morning that the Packers promoted guard/tackle Adam Pankey to the teams roster.

Gunter originally made the Packers roster as an undrafted rookie out of Miami in 2015.  Despite a lack of speed, Gunter got the job done in the Packers secondary.  But Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins are healthy this year and Gunter fell out of the rotation.

Ricky Jean Francois signed with the Packers in the offseason but may have been expendable after the Packers signed Quinton Dial.  With only one practice under his belt, Dial wasn’t active for last Sunday’s game against Seattle.  But Dial should be ready to go this week when the Packers face the Falcons in Atlanta.

DB Sam Shields says he’s been released by the Packers

February 8, 2017 By Bill Scott

After missing 15 regular season games and all of the playoffs, defensive back Sam Shields announced on his Instagram account this morning that he has been released by the Green Bay Packers.

Shields would have been entering the final year of a four year deal that would have paid him $9 million.

Shields missed almost the entire season after sustaining his fifth documented concussion in the opener at Jacksonville.

Shields told reporters after the NFC Championship game loss in Atlanta that he wanted to continue to play, despite his concussion issues.  If he does return to the game, it will now most likely be with another team.

Shields is facing charges for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia from an incident at his home in October.  He has a hearing scheduled in Brown County Circuit Court this week. [Read more…]

Randall to miss several weeks after groin surgery

October 24, 2016 By Bill Scott

packers-logoThe Green Bay Packers will go into Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons without another one of their cornerbacks.

Starter Damarious Randall had surgery to repair a groin injury over the weekend.  Randall is expected to miss four to six weeks.

Randall posted photos of himself in Philadelphia on Snapchat over the weekend.  That’s where he had the surgery done, by core muscle surgeon Dr. William Meyers.  Meyers has operated on several Packers players over the years and is considered the nation’s premier sports hernia surgeon.

The Packers are already without top corner Sam Shields, who was placed on injured reserve last week after missing four games with a concussion.  Shields could come back in eight weeks but he could also be done for the season. [Read more…]

Packers use defense to beat Giants 23-16

October 10, 2016 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers offense is usually the leading factor to their winning ways.  But for most of the first four games this season, it’s the Packers defense that has led the way, including Sunday nights 23-16 win over the New York Giants.

The Packers played without five starters on defense in their win over the Lions and were missing both starting corners.  Sam Shields remains in the concussion protocol and Damarious was scratched from the lineup two hours before kickoff last night with a groin injury.

Quinten Rollins, LaDarius Gunter and Micah Hyde were left to cover the Giants receivers Odell Beckham Jr., Victory Cruz and Sterling Shepherd.  Most thought the game would be a shootout.

Instead, the Packers offense started fast but struggled to maintain any consistency and it was up to the defense to save the day.  That’s exactly what they did, holding Beckham to five catches for 56 yards.  Cruz had one reception and Shepherd had two catches for 14 yards. [Read more…]
