12th ranked Wisconsin sweeps Arizona State

January 18, 2021 By Bill Scott

Linus Weissbach

The 12th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Arizona State with a 5-2 victory on Sunday night at LaBahn Arena.

Linus Weissbach and Cole Caufield scored power play goals in the first period and Mike Vorlicky lit the lamp in the second for a 3-1 lead.

The Sun Devils scored during a delayed 5-minute major penalty against Roman Ahcan with just over seven minutes left to play, but the Badgers killed off the penalty thanks in large part to freshman goaltender Cameron Rowe, who made 11 of his 23 saves in the third period.

Jason Dhooge and Brock Caufield added empty net goals to finish off the win and sweep of the Sun Devils, who seven weeks ago, swept the Badgers.

Wisconsin went 2-for-3 on the power play, ending a three-game drought and an 0-for-7 stretch.

The Badgers (8-6-0, 6-4-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) resume Big Ten play this Thursday and Friday at Penn State.

November 14, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (1-0-0, 1-0-0-0 Big Ten), playing in its first game in 250 days to the coronavirus pandemic, knocked off Notre Dame (0-1-0, 0-1-0-0 Big Ten) 2-0 in their season opener on Friday night in South Bend.

Senior Linus Weissbach scored the first goal of the season, with 6:55 left in the opening period.  The Badgers scored their second goal on the power play in the second period off the stick of sophomore Dylan Holloway to make it 2-0.

Hockey Badgers sweep Wolverines, face Penn State in Big Ten Tournament

March 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

With Penn State winning at Notre Dame on Saturday, Wisconsin’s chances of securing a home series in the opening round of the Big Ten Conference post-season playoffs went up in smoke.  But that didn’t stop the Badgers from pulling off the two-game sweep of the Wolverines, winning a 4-3 overtime thriller at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers finished the regular season with three straight wins.

Trailing 3-2 in the final minutes, Tony Granato pulled his goaltender and Ty Emberson netted the game tying goal with 1:07 left in regulation.

The Badgers had a goal waved off in overtime after it was ruled they had too many men on the ice.  But a minute later, Linus Weissbach stick handled through traffic and fired a wrist shot from the left side to beat Michigan goaltender Hayden Lavigne and secure a “senior night” win for the Badgers.

Prior to leaving the ice, the Badgers thanked the fans and then helped serenade the crowd to “Varsity”. [Read more…]

Badgers salvage shooting win in series finale at MSU

February 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team, after falling 4-1 at Michigan State on Friday night, recorded a season high 54 shots on Saturday and skated to a 2-2 tie in the series finale against the Spartans on Saturday.  Junior Max Zimmer scored in the sudden-death shootout to give the Badgers the extra point in the Big Ten standings.

Senior forward Will Johnson scored his eighth goal of the season give minutes into the game to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.

The Spartans evened the game 1-1 early in the second, before Wisconsin sophomore winger Linus Weissbach banged in a loose rebound in the crease past MSU goaltender Drew DeRidder to give the Badgers the lead once again.

Spartans winger Mitchell Lewandowski knotted the game up early in the third frame, and despite several promising chances in front of the MSU net, the Badgers couldn’t secure the game-winner to deny overtime.

Junior goaltender Jack Berry made 31 stops in-goal for the Badgers.

Wisconsin returns to Madison and will host fourth ranked and Big Ten leading Ohio State at the Kohl Center.  Saturday night, the Badgers will honor legendary Badger Mark Johnson by retiring his number 10 during a pregame ceremony.
