Brewers throttled by Dodgers in series finale

August 3, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finished their eight game road trip out west with a 5-3 record and they’ll take it.  But they finished with two straight losses, including Thursday nights 21-5 blowout loss to the Dodgers.

The Dodgers had 18 hits and clubbed seven home runs.  Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin (10-4) gave up three of the long balls, allowing eight earned runs and not making it out of the fifth.

The 21 runs scored by the Dodgers is the most ever scored against a Brewers team.  With the hits and runs piling up, manager Craig Counsell once again went to a couple of position players to mop up, Hernan Perez and Erik Kratz.

The Brewers did score first after Christian Yelich doubled and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches from Clayton Kershaw. [Read more…]

Dodgers beat Brewers in a walkoff

August 2, 2018 By Bill Scott

Matt Albers gave up a two-run homer to Yasmani Grandal in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Milwaukee Brewers lost 6-4 to the Dodgers in Los Angeles.

The Brewers trailed 4-2 in the eighth inning before drawing even.  Mike Moustakas clubbed a run scoring double to make it 4-3 and Manny Pina’s rbi single tied the game 4-4.

The Dodgers missed chances to take the lead in the bottom of the 8th and then a chance to win it in the 9th.  But in the 10th, Matt Kemp singled and Grandal followed with the walk-off home run.

Pina and Lorenzo Cain both had three hits for the Brewers in the loss.

Chase Anderson retired the first 12 batters he faced before surrendering solo home runs to Grandal and newly acquired infielder Brian Dozier.

The Brewers dropped to 5-2 on their current eight-game road trip out west.  They also dropped a game behind the Chicago Cubs in the Central Division standings after the Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2 earlier.

The final game of the series is tonight at 8 p.m.  Jhoulys Chacin (10-3, 3.45) gets the call for the Brewers.  Clayton Kershaw (4-5, 2.52) goes for the Dodgers.

Thames leads Brewers past Dodgers

July 31, 2018 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames clubbed a three-run homer in the third inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine.

Travis Shaw and Jesus Aguilar also drove in runs for the Brewers, who improved to 4-1 on their 8-game West Coast road trip.  Josh Hader pitched two innings of scoreless relief to earn his fourth victory.

Manny Machado’s first home game with the Dodgers was spoiled by the Brewers victory.  Machado did hit a solo homer in his Dodger Stadium debut.

Kenta Maeda didn’t make it out of the fifth inning to get tagged with the loss.

Rookie Freddy Peralta started for the Brewers but pitched out of trouble and allowed a run on three hits in four innings of work.  His pitch count reached 98 pitches in four innings and he was removed in favor of Hader.  Peralta allowed one run and three hits while walking four and striking out six.

The win allowed the Brewers to pull within a single game of the idle Chicago Cubs in the Central Division.  The Dodgers are up just 1/2 game over the Diamondbacks for the top spot in the NL West.

The Brewers will send Wade Miley to the mound in game two of the series tonight.  Miley is 3-0 in six career starts lifetime at Dodger Stadium with a 2.41 ERA.

The Milwaukee Brewers capped off a three-city road trip by taking 2 of 3 from the Los Angeles Dodgers, pulling out a 3-2 victory on Sunday.  The Brewers went 5-4 on the road trip and return home to Milwaukee just two games behind the Central Division leading Chicago Cubs.

The Brewers became the first team to claim a series from the Dodgers since the first week of June.  The Dodgers had gone 19-0-3 in their previous 22 series.

Jimmy Nelson didn’t allow a hit until the sixth and ended up pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of runs on four hits.  Nelson improved to 10-6 on the season with a 3.75 ERA.

The Brewers scored all of their runs off of Dodgers starter Yu Darvish, who made it through five innings.  A first inning error allowed the Brewers to jump out in front 1-0.  They scored two more in the third on a home run by Hernan Perez and a run-scoring single by Domingo Santana.  [Read more…]

Brewers miss chance to gain ground

August 26, 2017 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers managed just one hit, a second inning Domingo Santana home run, and fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 in their series opener at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.

The Brewers missed a golden opportunity to pick up some ground in both the division and wild card races.  Both Chicago and Colorado lost on Friday night as well, so the Brewers remain three games behind the Cubs in the Central Division title chase and 3 1/2 games behind the Rockies in the chase for the final wildcard playoff spot.

Dodger starter Kenta Maeda worked six innings, allowing only Santana’s home run.

Chase Anderson made his second start in his return from an oblique strain and took the loss.  He allowed two runs on six hits in five innings pitched.

The Dodgers tied the game 1-1 when Logan Forsythe clubbed a solo home run in the fourth.  Yasmani Grandal’s RBI single in the fifth put the Dodgers up for good in the fifth at 2-1.  Yasiel Puig added insurance with his 23rd home run of the season, off of Jared Hughes in the sixth.

Zach Davies (14-7, 4.09) pitches game two of the series tonight.  The Dodgers will counter with Ross Stripling (3-4, 3.41).

Brewers blank Dodgers, salvage final game of series

June 5, 2017 By Bill Scott

After suffering back-to-back losses to the Dodgers, games they should have won, the Milwaukee Brewers bounced back on Sunday with a 3-0 win at Miller Park, salvaging the final game in their series.  The Brewers remain one game in front of the Cubs atop the National League Central Division.

Zach Davies pitched six-plus innings of shutout ball and this time, the Brewers bullpen held strong.  Corey Knebel struck out the side in the ninth inning to nail down his fifth save.

The Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Eric Thames 15th home run of the season.  Eric Sogard made it 2-0 in the second inning with a 2-0, 2-out rbi single in the second.  The Brewers final run came in the 8th inning when Domingo Santana clubbed his 10th home run of the season.

Davies allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out six, improving to 6-3 on the season.

Oliver Drake, Jacob Barnes and Knebel finished up for the Brewers 30th win of the season.

The Brewers have now outscored their opponents 53-17 in the first inning of games this season.  They’ve also led in 49 of their 57 games, which leads the National League.

Milwaukee continues its home stand with a game tonight against the San Francisco Giants at Miller Park.  Junior Guerra (1-0, 1.84) faces San Francisco’s Jeff Samardzija (1-7, 4.63) in the pitching matchup.
