Packers sign Neal for two more years

March 13, 2014 By Bill Scott

When reports started to surface about the Chicago Bears having an interest

Mike Neal

Mike Neal

in Packers outside linebacker Mike Neal, it didn’t take long to find out just where Green Bay stood.

The Packers didn’t sign any outside free agents on day 2 of free agency, but they did resign Neal, giving him a two-year deal.  Neal set a career high with five quarterback sacks last season, while spending much of his time at outside linebacker.  The Packers would like to see him spend more time at defensive end this season.

2013 was somewhat of a breakout year for Neal, who had been plagued by injuries and a suspension in his first three seasons.

M.D. Jennings

The Packers did lose free agent safety M.D. Jennings after deciding not to offer him a tender.  He signed a 1-year deal with the Chicago Bears.

Owen Daniels

The Packers will reportedly bring in former Badger and Houston Texans tight end Owen Daniels for a visit soon.  Daniels ranks second in Texan’s history with 385 receptions for more than 4,600 yards.  He played in just five games last season, suffering a broken fibula in October.

All quiet on the Packers front

March 12, 2014 By Bill Scott

While other NFL teams have been busy on the first day of NFL free agency,

Jamari Lattimore

Jamari Lattimore

the Green Bay Packers are simply spectators.

Besides signing one of their own (Sam Shields) to a four-year deal, the Packers extended a qualifying offer to restricted free-agent Jamari Lattimore before the start of the new league year at 3pm on Tuesday.

The Packers offered the lowest of the three available restricted tenders worth $1.431 million to Lattimore.  Lattimore can still negotiate with teams until he signs the tender, but the move allows the Packers the right-of-first-refusal to match any outside offers.

Lattimore has been a big contributor on special teams over the last three years.  He even started four games at linebacker last season, filling in for an injured Brad Jones.  He finished with 35 tackles and two sacks.

The Packers didn’t extend a qualifying offer to restricted free agent M.D. Jennings, although they could still try to resign Jennings at a lower price.

Packers need to find Collins’ replacement

April 27, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers released safety Nick Collins on Wednesday after failing

Dom Capers

him on his physical.  In effect, the Packers said they weren’t comfortable putting Collins back on the field, even though he could eventually be cleared by medical specialists.

Packers defensive coordinator was asked about his level of concern at the safety position last night after the Packers released Collins and acquired pass rush help in the first round of the draft.
