14 Former Mallards Selected in 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft

MADISON, Wis. – 14 former Madison Mallards will continue their baseball dreams into the professional ranks after being chosen in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. No team in the competing Great Lakes West division had more former players selected than the Mallards.

“That’s what it’s all about for me – strictly,” Mallards’ manager Donnie Scott said. “That’s what I’m here for, I want to try and help these guys prepare for pro ball and hopefully they get the opportunity.”

Tyler Dyson (2017) was the first Mallard off the board. The Florida product was selected 153rd overall by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round. Dyson pitched for the Mallards during the 2017 season and finished with a perfect 4-0 record on the mound with a stellar 1.58 ERA. Dyson also picked up a win during the 2017 Major League Dreams Showcase in Madison that year. [Read more…]

Northwoods League Scoreboard Update

Justin Watland tosses 2-hitter for the Mallards.

The Madison Mallards (21-6) cruised to a 10-3 win over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters Monday night in the sixth game of their seven game road swing.

Starting pitcher Justin Watland (San Jose State) allowed only two bloop hits and one unearned run in seven innings of work against the Rafters, walking none and fanning seven.  Watland has now spun 17 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run.

With Kalamazoo’s 7-4 loss at Fond Du Lac, the Mallards now have a two-game lead over the Growlers with nine left to play in the first half of the Northwoods League.

Mallards Push Win Streak To Eleven

More late-inning heroics for the Madison Mallards (13-3) on Wednesday night.  The Mallards won their 11th straight game when Tyler Plantier hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

The Mallards trailed 4-0 early but stormed back to beat the Lake Shore Chinooks 6-5, sealing their fifth straight series sweep.

Madison continues its home stand tonight when they host the Green Bay Bullfrogs at Warner Park (7:05 p.m.).

Northwoods League News!

Northwoods League LogoThe 2016 Northwoods League Playoffs are set to start tonight.  Eight teams will vie for a trip to the Summer Collegiate World Series.

Four teams from Wisconsin are among the final eight.

In the North, Eau Claire will play host to Mankato.

In the South, Wisconsin Rapids will play host to Lake Shore and Madison is home against Battle Creek. [Read more…]

Northwoods League has success in 2016 MLB Draft

NWL MLB DraftThe Northwoods League had record success in the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.  A total of 179 current Northwoods League players and alumni were selected in this year’s draft along with a record five 1st round picks.

The highest pick in this year’s draft was A.J. Puk, a junior left handed pitcher at Florida.  He was picked in the first round by the Oakland A’s with the 6th overall pick.  Puk played as both a pitcher and infielder with the Waterloo Bucks in 2014.

Catcher Matt Thaiss of Virginia played with the Madison Mallards in 2014.  He was taken 16th overall by the Los Angeles Angels. [Read more…]

Kingfish advance to NWL World Series

Kenosha KingfishJohn Brodner’s walk-off, game-winning single gave the Kenosha Kingfish a 2-1 victory over the Madison Mallards and the Northwoods League South Division Championship.

Brodner also scored the game tying run in the eighth inning for the Kingfish, on a Jeremy Vasquez single to center.

The win, moves Kenosha into the best-of-three Summer Collegiate World Series against the St. Cloud Rox starting Thursday night at Simmons Field in Kenosha.

Brendon Allen worked six strong innings for the Kingfish and Ryan Orr tossed the final three innings in relief to earn the win.

St. Cloud captured the North Division title with a 10-3 win over Duluth.

Mallards promote Isham to General Manager

The Madison Mallards announced that Tyler Isham has been promoted as the club’s General Manager today.

Isham is entering his fifth season with the Mallards, advancing through the organization since starting as a public relations intern in the summer of 2011.  He spent this past season as Assistant General Manager, managing the team’s marketing department and executing corporate sponsorships.

Isham has also spent time as the Group Sales Manager and the past four seasons in a public relations role, writing all press releases and overseeing content on MallardsBaseball.com.

Isham is a 2011 graduate of Beloit College where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications.

Isham will work directly with Mallards President, Vern Stenman and Mallards Chief Operating Officer, Conor Caloia to oversee the most successful organization in summer collegiate baseball.

Mallards honored as NWL’s organization of the year

The Madison Mallards were honored with the Organization of the Year award after drawing 213,833 fans to Warner Park and winning the Northwoods League Summer Collegiate World Series for the second time.

The Mallards also hosted the first ever Big League Dreams Showcase this summer which featured four teams of the top prospects in the Northwoods League as chosen by Major League Scouts.

Mallards capture World Series opener

Duluth Huskies 10-7, capturing game 1 of the Summer Collegiate World Series.

The Mallards scored six runs in the fifth inning, capped off by an Alex Bacon 3-run homer to left center.  It was Bacon’s second-consecutive night with a three-run home run to give the Mallards the lead.

The Mallards also got a 4 for 5 performance from John LaPrise.

The Mallards head to Duluth for game 2 of the World Series tonight.  They’re looking to wrap up their first Northwoods League Title since 2004.

Mallards to play for NWL Championship

The Madison Mallards dropped the first game of the best 2-of-3 Northwoods League

semifinal series 15-0 to Lakeshore.  They didn’t hang their heads.  The Mallards bounced back to win Tuesday night to even the series up and force a deciding game 3.

Last night, the Mallards completed the comeback as Alex Bacon clubbed a 3-run, 9th inning home run for a thrilling 5-3 win over the Chinooks.

Bacon didn’t even start the game.  He replaced outfielder Tony Cheky in the fifth after Cheky hurt his shoulder diving for a line drive.  He took an 0-2 pitch and pit it just over the left field fence.

Mallards reliever Danny Sullivan closed out the victory by earning the save.

Madison hosts game one of the Summer Collegiate World Series tonight at 7:05pm at the “Duck Pond”.
