June 6, 2019 By [email protected]

MADISON, Wis. – 14 former Madison Mallards will continue their baseball dreams into the professional ranks after being chosen in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. No team in the competing Great Lakes West division had more former players selected than the Mallards.

“That’s what it’s all about for me – strictly,” Mallards’ manager Donnie Scott said. “That’s what I’m here for, I want to try and help these guys prepare for pro ball and hopefully they get the opportunity.”

Tyler Dyson (2017) was the first Mallard off the board. The Florida product was selected 153rd overall by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round. Dyson pitched for the Mallards during the 2017 season and finished with a perfect 4-0 record on the mound with a stellar 1.58 ERA. Dyson also picked up a win during the 2017 Major League Dreams Showcase in Madison that year. [Read more…]

July 27, 2011 By WRN Contributor

While police say 28-year-old David Hoem did not admit to police that he killed four-year-old Kevin McArthur and his three-year-old brother Kemaurey, they say he did tell investigators the biblical figure Daniel had simply given the boys a big embrace while they were in his car, after which they both smiled and went to sleep.

Hoem, who was the boyfriend of the boys’ mother, is accused of strangling the children and is being charged with two counts of first degree intentional homicide. [Read more…]

After a week of protesters rallying in Madison, supporters of the Budget Repair bill have their say over the weekend.

While thousands of people show their support for Governor Scott Walker at the state capitol on Saturday chanting “thank you Scott,” some folks were more focused on the no-show senators. “I want people to vote and get this over with. We elected a Republican governor, a Republican House and Senate; we got to get it over with.”

All 14 Democrats in the senate fled the state on Wednesday to avoid a vote on the controversial measure. [Read more…]

Frantic moments Thursday evening ended with the birth of a baby boy at a fire station on Madison’s east side. Marriage debate plays out in Madison (VIDEO)

July 27, 2010 By Bob Hague

The “Summer of Marriage Tour” made a tumultuous stop in Madison on Tuesday. Approximately two dozen traditional marriage supporters were outnumbered by some 200 members of the LGBT community and their supporters, as speakers in support of traditional marriage rallied on the Capitol steps. The counter protest began on the Library Mall at UW Madison, where John Becker of Milwaukee defended his marriage to Michael Knoppen. “We know what it’s like to have our loved used as a political weapon,” said Becker. “But love is stronger than hate. Their hatred of our marriage will never be stronger than my love for my husband.” Counter protesters marched down State Street to the Capitol, where the Tour stop, a project of the National Organization for Marriage, took place.

July 16, 2010 By Bob Hague

Wisconsin hosts bike polo teams from around the nation this weekend. Bike polo is a sport that’s been growing in popularity in Madison and elsewhere. Event organizer Jonny Hunter says the Madison bike polo club put in a bid last November to host the North American Hard Court Bike Polo Championship tournament, and was the overwhelming choice. “The sport’s been growing very fast, and Madison has been part of that,” Hunter says. “Our club (Mad Bike Polo) isn’t as big as others, but we’ve been participating in big tournaments and doing well. We’re respected in the scene.”

A Craiglist posting by a Madison man got more attention than he probably wanted. He was looking for a mechanic to build an explosive device.
