Lewis returning to Packers for 16th season

March 25, 2021 By Bill Scott

Marcedes Lewis

Marcedes Lewis drew continual praise from Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and now the veteran tight end is returning for another season in Green Bay.

The Packers are re-signing the soon-to-be 37-year old, who is known more for his blocking and his leadership, then catching passes.  Lewis caught just 10 passes for 107 yards and three touchdowns in 2020.

Lewis will be entering his 16th NFL season and is among the five NFL tight ends to play 15 seasons in the league, joining Jason Witten, Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates and Jackie Smith. [Read more…]

Packers lose rookie TE Deguara to torn ACL

October 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers lost their third-round draft pick, TE Josiah Deguara to a season-ending knee injury in Monday’s 30-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field.

Deguara was hurt while blocking on a punt and had already missed the two previous games with an ankle injury.

“Unfortunately, it looks to be a pretty bad one,” coach Matt LaFleur said Tuesday,  “So, you know, I hurt for Josiah.  I love what he’s all about, the mentality he brings and he’s certainly somebody we were really excited about.  And it’s been a little bit of a roller coaster because in terms of I thought he had a great game vs. Minnesota in Week 1, and then he goes out with an ankle injury, you know; it’s just been, it’s been tough.  But we expect him to bounce back from it and we still think he has a really bright future in this league.” [Read more…]

Packers head to bye week undefeated

October 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Robert Tonyan

Last year, the Green Bay Packers were one of the healthiest teams in the National Football League.  This year, they’re far from it, but it hasn’t stopped the green and gold from a perfect 4-0 start.

Playing without Davante Adams, Marcedes Lewis and Kenny Clark, the Packers rolled to a 30-16 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night at Lambeau Field.  Aaron Rodgers passed for 327 yards and four touchdowns, with three of the scoring strikes going to tight end Robert Tonyan.

The Packers have now opened a season by scoring at least 30 points in four straight games for the first time in franchise history.

Tonyan’s touchdown receptions came from 19, 8 and 21 yards.  He finished the night with six catches for 98 yards.  His five touchdowns for the season ties him with Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans for the NFL lead. [Read more…]

Packers rebound to beat Giants in New York

December 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

Allen Lazard

Aaron Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes to lead the Green Bay Packers to a 31-13 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

Rodgers completed 21 of 33 for 243 yards with rain, sleet and eventually heavy snow falling.

Rodgers hit Davante Adams on touchdown passes of 8 and 17 yards, Allen Lazard for 37 yards and veteran Marcedes Lewis on a short 1-yard touchdown pass.

The Packers also intercepted rookie Daniel Jones three times, winning the turnover battle 3-0.

The loss sent the Giants (2-10) to their eighth straight loss, their worst losing streak in 15 years.

The Packers scored the first three times they had the ball, with the first two drives ending on touchdown [Read more…]

Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

Packers bringing Lewis back for another season

March 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

Marcedes Lewis caught only three passes for 39 yards in 16 games last season, but the Green Bay Packers thought enough about his blocking that they decided to bring him back for another season.

Lewis was only targeted four times, catching three of them.

Lewis is familiar with new Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.  Hackett called plays for two seasons in Jacksonville in 2016 and 2017 and Lewis caught 44 passes for 487 yards and six touchdowns during that time.

Restricted free agent wide receiver Geronimo Allison will also return in 2019 after the Packers tendered him the original-round offer of $2.025 million.  Other teams can offer a contract to Allison, but the Packers would have the opportunity to match it.  If they don’t, they would not be compensated for the loss.

Allison finished last season on injured reserve after recovering from a torn abductor muscle.

The Packers elected not to tender a contract offer to free agent safety Kentrell Brice and neglected to make an offer to free agent Bashaud Breeland.

Packers announce the signing of TE Lewis

May 25, 2018 By Bill Scott

Packers to resume OTA workouts next week

The Green Bay Packers were looking for blocking help from the tight end position and they found it in former Jacksonville Jaguars veteran Marcedes Lewis.

Lewis is entering his 13th season in the NFL and has been regarded as one of the better blocking tight ends in the league.

Lewis did catch five touchdown passes last season, his highest total since the 2010 season when he caught 10 scoring passes.  He started all 16 games for the Jaguars last season, catching 24 passes for 318 yards.

In 12 seasons, Lewis had 375 receptions for 4,502 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Lewis joins newly signed veteran Jimmy Graham and former Badger Lance Kendricks.  Both Graham and Kendricks are considered to be below average blocking tight ends.

The Packers also have a handful of young undrafted tight ends who will battle for roster spots this summer.
