Brewers score five and lose

May 7, 2014 By Bill Scott

When the Milwaukee Brewers score four or more runs, they usually win.  In fact, entering Tuesday nights game against Arizona, the Brewers were 18-0 when scoring four or more runs in a game.

The streak was bound to end at some point, and it did last night.  The Brewers scored five runs, but it didn’t matter.  Arizona clubbed three home runs and beat the Brewers 7-5 at Miller Park.  The Diamondbacks tied the game 5-5, then won it with Aaron Hill’s two-run homer in the 3-run 8th inning.

The Brewers became the last team in the Major Leagues to lose a game when scoring at least four runs.

Marco Estrada worked six innings, allowing four runs but left with the lead.  It was the bullpen that failed the Brewers this time.  Brandon Kintzler took the mound and gave up Miguel Montero’s run scoring single, followed by Aaron Hill’s long ball.

Kintzler also served up Brandon Phillips game-tying home run in Cincinnati’s extra-inning win over the Brewers on Sunday.  Since returning April 23 from the disabled list, Kintzler has allowed three home runs.

Arizona’s Josh Collmenter allowed all five runs (4 unearned) in the first inning but the Brewers couldn’t knock him out of the game.  Collmenter held the Brewers in check from that point forward, before turning things over to the bullpen in the 7th.

Marco Estrada worked six innings but tweaked a quadriceps muscle fielding a bunt in the fifth inning but stayed in ghe game.

The Brewers will send Wily Peralta (4-1, 2.04) to the mound in the series finale this afternoon (12:10pm).  Bronson Arroyo (2-2, 6.03) goes for Arizona.

Late home run lifts Cincinnati past the Brewers

May 2, 2014 By Bill Scott

Brayan Pena’s pinch hit two run homer in the 8th inning broke a 3-3 tie and led the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Great American Ballpark.

It’s the second straight loss for the Brewers, whose 20-9 record is still the best in baseball.

Carlos Gomez clubbed a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning off of Homer Bailey to draw the Brewers and Reds even at 3.  But Pena answered with his pinch hit homer in the 8th to give the Reds the lead for good.  Pena’s blast to right came off of Brewers reliever Jim Henderson, who took the loss.

It was a bad night for Brewers pitching, which surrendered eight walks and hit a batter.  Marco Estrada didn’t have his best stuff but kept the Brewers in the game and ended with his fifth straight quality start.

Carlos Gomez was robbed of an extra base hit in the first inning with center fielder Billy Hamilton making a diving catch.  Gomez turned around and returned the favor by robbing Joey Votto of a home run to center field.

Game two of the series is tonight.  Wily Peralta (3-1, 2.56) pitches for the Brewers.  Mike Leake (2-2, 3.82) pitches for Cincinnati.

Garza struggles as Brewers drop series finale to Cardinals

May 1, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finished the month of April with a 20-8 record, but they did so with a 9-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Brewers needed starter Matt Garza to get them deep into the game to take some pressure off of the bullpen, but that didn’t happen.  Garza suffered a right thumb contusion while hitting and worked three innings before being removed.  That meant trouble for a heavily taxed bullpen.

Ron Roenicke went with little used Rule 5 draft pick Wei-Chung Wang who was overmatched by the Cardinals.  Wang wound up allowing four runs on six hits in three innings.  It brings his total to 13 hits and 10 runs allowed in just six innings this season.

Zach Duke followed for an inning and the Brewers called on catcher Martin Maldonaldo to finish up, working a scoreless 8th inning.  Maldonado became the first position player to pitch for the Brewers since infielder Joe Inglett in July 2010.

The Brewers got off to a good start.  Home runs by Mark Reynolds and Carlos Gomez homered to give the Brewers a 3-1 lead.  But St. Louis slugger Matt Adams clubbed a long three-run homer to right to put the Cardinals up for good at 4-3.  Allen Craig also homered for the Cardinals, who salvaged the final game in the series.

The Brewers open a four-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds tonight.  Manager Ron Roenicke says there’ll likely be a roster move announced before the game.  The Brewers need more bullpen help and it could come at the expense of the rookie Wei-Chung Wang.  Because he was acquired from the Pirates in the Rule 5 Draft, if the Brewers would have to offer him back to the Pirates.

Marco Estrada (2-1, 2.87) pitches for the Brewers in the series opener at Cincinnati.  The Reds will counter with Homer Bailey (1-2, 6.15).

Cardinals end Brewers 9-game win streak

April 15, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers managed just 3-hits last night and saw their 9-game win streak come to end, falling to the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 at Miller Park.

Lance Lynn and Carlos Martinez shut the Brewers lineup down, handing Milwaukee its first defeat since April 2nd.

Matt Garza lost his Brewers debut 1-0 to the Atlanta Braves on that day.  He took the loss last night as well, surrendering a second inning solo home run to Jhonny Peralta and a three-run blast off the bat of Jon Jay in the 6th.

But Garza has had no support at all.  He’s pitched 15-innings in two games at Miller Park and hasn’t received a single run from the Brewers offense. [Read more…]

Brewers run win streak to 5

April 10, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers ran their winning streak to five games, rallying to score five runs late and beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-4 at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday night.

The entire lineup his hitting the ball for the Brewers.  They’ve put together 27 hits in the first two games of the series.  Carlos Gomez and Mark Reynolds both homered as a part of the Brewers attack.

The clutch hitting was welcomed for the Brewers, with starter Matt Garza struggling through six innings.  The Phillies touched Garza for three runs in the first inning, but the Brewers right hander battled, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks.  He did balk in a run but for the most part, kept the Phillies from having a big inning after the first inning.

After his three homer game on Tuesday, Ryan Braun clubbed a two-run triple to center to cap a three run rally in the 8th.  That outburst broke a
4-4 tie.

The Brewers have started 5-0 on the road for the first time since 1987.  That year, they won their first 13-games overall.

The Brewers will play for the sweep tonight (6:05pm).  They’ll send Marco Estrada (0-0, 1.59 ERA) to the mound against Philadelphia’s Cliff Lee (2-0, 6.00 ERA).

4-run 9th lifts Brewers to victory

April 4, 2014 By Bill Scott

On a day when the Boston Red Sox were celebrating their World Series Championship from last fall, collecting their Championship rings before the game, the Milwaukee Brewers spoiled their party at Fenway Park.

The Brewers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early with one of the runs coming on Jonathan Lucroy’s first home run of the season.

The Red Sox would even the score and it would stay that way until the 9th inning.  That’s when Lyle Overbay, hitless on the season, belted a 2-run double to set off a 4-run, 9th inning outburst to propel the Brewers to victory.

Marco Estrada worked 5 2/3 innings but wasn’t involved in the decision.  Will Smith, Brandon Kintzler and Francisco Rodriguez finished up, with Kintzler getting credit for the victory.

Overbay had signed with the Red Sox before the 2013 season but was released near the end of spring training.  He then signed with the Yankees where he played the season.

Game two of the series is Saturday.  Wily Peralta gets the start for the Brewers.

March 30, 2014 By Bill Scott

Marco Estrada worked five scoreless innings and the Milwaukee Brewers ended exhibition play with a 7-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday afternoon at Miller Park.

Estrada held the Royals to a pair of hits and the Brewers right hander finished the spring with 17 straight scoreless innings.

Jonathan Lucroy clubbed a two-run double and Logan Schafer had three hits and two rbi’s.

The Royals got both of their runs in the 9th inning off of reliever Francisco Rodriguez.  The Brewers ended spring ball with a 13-18 record.  They’ll open the regular season Monday afternoon against the Atlanta Braves at Miller Park.

March 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

Barring any late changes, it would appear the Milwaukee Brewers 25-man

Ron Roenicke

Ron Roenicke

roster is set with opening day next Monday drawing closer.

The Brewers optioned reliever Rob Wooten and utility player Elian Herrera to Class AAA Nashville, and left-hander Tom Gorzelanny will open the season on the disabled list.

Among the players that made the 25-man roster is Rule 5 draft pick Wei-Chung Wang.  Wang made the jump from rookie ball and will be used by the Brewers in long relief. [Read more…]

Brewers finish up with a 3-2 loss to the Mets

September 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers 2013 baseball season came to a close Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the New York Mets at Citi Field.

It was another solid outing for Marco Estrada, who allowed just two hits and one run over seven innings.  Estrada struck out eight and walked nobody, making another push for inclusion in the 2014 Brewers starting pitching rotation.

The Brewers gave up a couple of un-earned runs in the 8th inning as the Mets salvaged the final game of the four game series in New York.

In nine starts since returning from the disabled list, Estrada went 3-0 with a 2.15 era.  He finished the season with a  7-4 record and a 3.87 era.

The Brewers already have Yovani Gallardo, Kyle Lohse and Wily Peralta penciled into their starting rotation next season.  Estrada appears to be a candidate for a 4th spot.

The Brewers finished 15-12 in the month of September and 74-88 for the season.
